I dont think gatti had much left mcgrit did excellent teaching an old dog new tricks, but prob had 1 war 2 many and the fights caught up with him.
When buddy boxed he had class head movement didnt often get hit clean if he can coach them skills to a strong aggresive box fighter such as paul he should become a force to be reckoned withI feel he obviously has the focus and commitment too, I believe he is one of our best middles.

It's a shame injury ruined McGirt's career.

His points win over Simon Brown is one of my favourite fights to watch -and that was after the rotot cuff injury that deprived him of a proper left hook!

He was beautifully balanced and a real treat to watch. Maybe fell a little short to be called an all time great but still one hell of a fighter in his day.

BTW on the subject of Paul Smith I dont think he comes off as arrogant at all and, other than a slight deficiency in natural hand speed, I think he is a cracking domestic fighter and a good fighter to watch.

McGirt was definitely very good. As you say his win over Brown was a masterclass. McGirt was clearly knackered from his efforts. I think this performance was a blueprint for Hopkins-Trinidad. (Brown was a hard bastard with lots of good welterweight wins - not far from being considered a modern great for his punch, persistence and excellent - if short - title reign.)

Also, I've not seen it, but ppl to this day feel that McGirt won the 1st with Pernell Whitaker. Although he lost the 2nd soundly enough and was trounced by Meldrick Taylor. Very, very ood boxer.

Was Buddy McGirts fight with Gary Jacobs shown on TV over here, i seem to remember seeing it the week after it took place, or i may be confused.

Like a few people have already pointed out, Pauls problem seems to be a love for having a tear up. If he stuck to boxing more instead of fighting, he'd make life a lot easier for himself. His power isn't his biggest asset, his boxing skill is.

And for those that think he's arrogant? Must be talking about a different Paul Smith
