I wonder how it will affect Enzo calzags? All of the fighters he trains are with Warren, which comes to my conclusion that Joe and Fwank have parted ways on a mutual understanding.

I am probably WAY off track here, but these articles say that Calzaghe is now self-managed... In terms of contracts, it doesn't mention promotional ties.

Could it be that Joe wants to negotiate his fights, but still let Warren promote then? That would explain why he has 'issues to resolve with Warren'...

Perhaps he wants to demand terms, but Warren will promote.

Or something else could be happening...

For example, could a promoter be about to sign exclusively with a network, but want one of his boxers, somehow, to appear on another network?

Haven't Brendan Ingle and Billy Graham had a similar kind of relationship.

Nothing last forever.

According to one of the articles online the 'issues' with Warren involved disputes over monies owed from the Hopkins fight. If that's true i don't see them working together at all for the farewell fight.

I did think it was either very odd, or very egotistical of Enzo Calzaghe to be wearing a shirt with "ENZO" on the back of it... but one wonders if there might be more than that - remembering the incidents with Billy Graham and Oliver Harrison not wearing the requested shirt.

It does show Fwank's naivety in not having his fighters nailed down to contracts.

What he did with Hatton was unbelievably naive, I can't believe he did the same with Calzaghe.

That said, on a personal level, I'm very surprised. I've seen Warren and Calzaghe together after fights, and I saw Frank over breakfast the morning of the Kessler fight, and there seemed to be a genuine level of bonding in the first case and concern in the latter.

I guess Golden Boy has turned the business around. Great for the names, but I'm not convinced it helps the sport from the ground up.

Excellent point, I hadn't actually realised this, but sure enough, it only started coming together post-summer '05.
I imagine SN will take this with class and extend Joe warm heartfelt good luck messages via the national press. After all the Kessler win was allegedly's happiest moment in boxing.
LMAO! Can't wait for the inevitabel about-face. From "the greatest boxer I've ever worked with" to "an underachiever who never capitalised on his prime", perhaps?

Conversely Pavlik is the rising star and collectively his and Calzaghe's stock may be the highest in the pro ranks. I refuse to believe that this contest would be less lucrative that the touted Jones swansong.

One thing I will dispute is the risk involved in fighting Jones. Although RJ is years removed from his prime, he still has very fast hands and is a legitimately concussive puncher (carrying far more weight in his hands than Pavlik). Providing Jones doesn't go into a defensive shell and wait for an opening all night whilst Calzaghe outworks him, there's a greater chance than most people think of Joe's 0 being snatched away inside of the sceduled 12 rounds.

To be honest I think this whole legacy thing is a redundent issue because whatever the fans say; Calzaghe is a virtual lock for the hall of fame and whichever of the two matches Joe selects, each is laden with it's own set of hazards, but for him to infer that Pavlik has less commercial potential than RJ at this point is bordering on absurd IMO.
I think its absurd to say its bordering on absurd. Pavlik's not exactly a household name. He's still got a lot more fighting to do. Fighting Jones is more iconic. Yes Jones is past his prime, but so is Joe, hence why we are talking about his final fight. There are only about three years between them. And as many have mentioned, fighting Jones still has its dangers. Contrary to what some think, Jones is clearly not a completely shot fighter - he's not as good, but still dangerous and has retained speed. So I think a fight with Jones is satifactory on two levels, firstly level of competition (though it is not as dangerous as fighting Pavlik) and secondly, due to the greater publicity it would draw. I also think Joe actually wants to fight Jones from a personal perspective, because of who Roy Jones is. So good for him I say.

As for splitting from Warren, he wants to generate a bigger percentage for himelf, and why not on his final fight against someone as iconic a Jones. I think it will be an amicable split.
True. Pavlik isn't the sttraction that he will be soon. The Taylor rematch and the mandatory (Lockett) got in the way of Arum's plans to build up Pavlik into a star. Pavlik has succeeded two very unpopular middleweight champs which has hurt his marketability a bit. Also the fact that he was built up with a minimum of hype.

With Joe retiring, I feel this is the main selling point of the fight. They can go on about Jones being a 4-weight champ and that will put bums on seats. But Calzaghe having his last fight will get all the Welsh fans sentimental & that alone will make it a landmark night. Even if Jones will be a crap fight, the bout can be very big.

I wonder if Calzaghe has been influenced by watching David Haye's career. If so, how ironic.

Anyway, seems like everyone dumps their promoter once they have cracked America.

Who's next, Arthur Abraham?

I dont begrudge Joe not fighting Pavlik. At 36 there has to be an end, and to be fair a Roy Jones farewell in cardiff will be fitting. The defining fight in joes career essentially was Kessler, he proved in that fight that he was the best supper middleweight, possibly of all time. A big money last fight, cha-ching, thank you for many entertaining nights of boxing.

Pavlik Kessler, now theres an interesting contest.

JC putting all his eggs in one basket, banking on the RJJ fight has left him in a much weaker position to get the right deal out Jones jnr

Coco,
I was also surprised by Wazza's non attendance at the Khan weigh in, but now everything fits.
Probably up to his nuts in it, sorting out the Calzaghe issue, and negotiations with the Khan team now that deal is over.
Wazza's at a crossroads, and if I'm honest I believe that's good for boxing.
Hennessy, Hobson, Maloney et al, never pressurised Wazza enough to put his status as no 1 under pressure, but now we see the new breed coming along - Golden Boy, Punch, Haymaker, and shortly Calzaghe and it's a different game.
Wazza is a shrewd business man and he's been here before.
For those on the outside it's going to be an interesting few months.
For those on the inside, it's goona be shit.
Wait for the accusations, writs, "my ball's bigger than your ball" mentality to come flooding out, and woe betide the first defector who falls on his face - the comments will be cutting.
Boxing is a multi million pound business run by kids at heart.
I think we're gonna see plenty of playground mentality, and a bit of bullying to boot.
Like I say, that could be good entertainment on the outside, but shite on the inside.

There's no bigger name in the sport, with the exception of DLH, but the fight means nowhere near as much as it would have done 5 years ago. The armchair fan wil lap it up but we all know jones is well past his prime and JC is right at the end of his career.

For those worried about this fight not getting attendance. I'm reminded of my Dad, who had become a rare attendee at Nottingham Forest being compelled to go and see Sheffield Wednesday v Chelsea because...

"He wanted to see Ruud Gullit live while he could".

I think RJJ will generate similar affection from boxing fans, a chance to see a legend.

Warren has rushed an announcement out about his 6th September show featuring AAA and Amir Khan.

Clearly released as a bit of spin following the JC announcement.

Raises more questions though. Like does that mean Amir has signed a new deal? And is he therefore now on Setanta?

Can't go to the Setanta website for this kind of info though - they still have AAA v Joan Guzman shown on their live fights pipeline :o

David's absolutely right

It is the same reason people went to see Tyson fight, the same reason people went to see George Best at Fulham ( I did because I never saw him play for Man Utd) and why people still flock to see The Rolling Stones

You know they wont be as good as when they were younger, but you would still like to see them for the first time or one more time before they go for good.

I went to see Van Halen in Philly not so long ago with DLR, it was great. Nowehere near as good as when I saw them blow sabbath off stage in 1977(8?) but it brought back a whole lot of memories

RJJ will be a real live visiting boxing legend and we have not had too many of those visit these shores recently. I can well believe he may get more support than JC wherever the fight is held
