Not a very good example as Folley was the technically more savvy fighter along with being bigger.

So, you'd say that Zora Folley was a better fighter, pound-for-pound, than Bob Foster?

I'm saying he was as technically proficient, and arguably more, than Foster.

And he beat Foster! Is it even possible to argue that Foster was the better fighter in any sort of way?

The whole idea of pound for pound lists was the result of a bored publicist/sportswriter back in the late 50s who wanted to promote Sugar Ray Robinson as the best fighter in the world. In the real world, it's meaningless because the heavyweight champion is still Number One and can usually whip any of the champs of the other seven weight classes.
'nuff said.

Wrong. And right.
The concept of "pound-for-pound" probably dates back to the ancient Greeks, or at least to the creation of weight divisions. But you're right that ultimately, the heavyweight champion is #1. That's why John Ruiz has probably made more money in his career than Shane Mosley.

when we say pound for pound fighter.........it is a fighter who established his name and career in different weight division, and there is no descrimination of weight class, and every boxer is qualified, as long as the fighter reach the pound-for-pound requirment which is
having a world title in different weight division.(that's why it is called a pound-for-pound not inch-for-inch DUH!)and height doesnt matter because someone complain about the smaller fighter againts a taller fighter. and i strongly believe that a fighter like Lennox Lewis is not qualified for being pound-for-pound fighter, because my point is , he never got any title belt in other weight class asside from heavyweight title belt. i know he is a great fighter, and i admire his boxing skills for a heavyweight fighter, and i can say that he is one of the TOP 20 or 10 greatest boxer together with Ali and klitscho brothers, but lets accept the fact that THEY ARE NOT A POUND-FOR-POUND FIGHTER. so dont get upset if your favorite heavyweight fighter doesnt includes in the top pound-for-pound fighter. peace to all!!!!!!!!

Do you have support for the assertion that the "pound-for-pound" concept was in common usage before Sugar Ray Robinson came on the scene?

so why dont you ask your heavy weight fighter to drop into a lower weight class two to three times so that he can whoop those other fighter. huh?
before he done that, your heavyweight fighter will die to dehydration

hey i just want to remind you guys that roy jones jr. a former middle weight;supermiddleweight;lightheavyweight beat john ruiz. so you cant simply said that heavyweight fighter is #1. roy jones jr. shift into different weightclass much higher than his original weight class. can ruiz do that. ( going into middleweight class) maybe a middleweight fighter like Pavlik will knocked Ruiz out if he went in a middleweight class

TOP 10 GREATEST FIGHTER ARE RATED ACCORDING TO THEIR RECORDS AND SKILLS NOT ACCORDING TO ITS WEIGHT. so you cant say that a fighter in a heavyweight division is #1

According to some in here John Ruiz is a better fighter than Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong, Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, and many others simply because he is a heavyweight.

Ezzard Charles was the #1 contender at both middleweight and heavyweight, but couldn't get a title shot because of him being in the armed forces, the titles being frozen and the politics of boxing being racist against black men. John Ruiz, Evander Holyfield, lots of heavyweights could have fought at 190 or 200 their whole respective careers, but being the best cruiserweight doesn't get you as much money as being the 20th best heavyweight.

I'd give Robinson a shot at beating him.

I would not be surprise if Robinsod defeated John Ruiz. How about Armstrong, Duran, Wilde, Pep, Lopez and many others?

Not a chance. That's why Ruiz made more money than any of those fighters, except Duran. I wouldn't ignore the possibility of the Duran of 1979 beating Ruiz if he roided up the way Jones did.
