Hope Andy Lee can come back from that disaster, which I guess was his last fight. Seriously, that bum Sykes was a BAD ad for boxing in Nuts first big show

I think Pov emerged from that farce with some dignity. He just got on with the job. He used Sykes' weight against him. Sykes was fat, Pov kept him off balance & toyed with him. Sykes is so lardy that when he went down, he asked the ref to help him up!

Ppl keep on punking out vs Povetkin. Byrd quit in the 11th after getting a working over. Donald, ok, he wasn't too bad, but he tried to stay out of range all the time. Chambers, unbeaten Yank, got sickened halfway and stopped throwing punches.

Ppl don't seem to like standing up to Alexander.

He is a rare breed amongst modern heavies: well schooled with good balance, timing and a decent array of punches. He can throw more than half a dozen punches a round without gassing and is patient in his approach to a fight.

These factors alone are sufficient to make him a real force in the modern division - his early progress and ambitious match making made me think he might be very special indeed but latterly I think he has proved himself to be more competent and well rounded than a spectacular standout or future HofF'er.

He still eats too many for my liking but I like the way he goes about his business and hope to see him inject some self respect back into the upper echelons of this moribund division..

Personally, I think Povetkin is a far greater danger to Hayes proposed HW "domination" than Wlad, or any of the other big heavies...

We were discussing on another thread about Gamboa as a prospect and his matchmaking.... Whilst not being matched quite as toughly, or looking quite as spectacular as the Cuban, Povetkin has beaten some good names and looked pretty damned good bearing in mind he's only 21/2 years and 16 fights in.

too right Eddie - his tough match making really made me sit up and take notice of this kid. What other heavy recently has had this sort of opposition so early on? I know his outstanding amateur credentials meant he could be moved more quickly than most but I have been impressed, even though his performances are generally more solid than spectacular:

Richard Bango, Friday Ahunanya (who has done well since), Ed Mahone (one time prospect who took Akinwande 12), MAyfield (former cruiser champ), Bostice (been in with them all), LArry Donald (I thought he could be a real banana skin), Chris Byrd (gives most big guys fits), Eddie Chambers (fast hands, good counters)

That is a very respectable collection of opponents for a heavyweight's first 15 outings.

Good to see Pov getting some credit. I like Haye, but while Haye is mouthing off & not announcing his opponent, Pov has already won an IBF tournament and earned his mandatory shot at Wlad.

I like how he fights in the clinches. He always manages to get that free hand working. Sensitive to the movements of his opponent (he is a trained martial artist) and is good at extricating himself from clinches and punching on the way out. This will REALLY help him vs Wla,d who holds on for dear life.

The rules meeting will be essential for Povetkin. When Wlad pulls out of a clinch, he turns his back. This should not be allowed. It will rob Povetkin of punching opportunities. I really hope Sauerland win purse bids and control the promotion as much as they can. Wlad should get deducated every time he turns his back, or the ref should just wave the action on if Wlad does this. (Look what happened to Livin Castillo when he turned his back on Alexander.)

Pov could find himself up against it, but I think he has that inner quality to win a very awkward assignment. Many ppl expect him to be dwarved and KO'd early, but his pedigree will stop that. Pov wins, becomes a very solid world champ.

Dmitry Pirog had a change of opponent. Was down to face Bronco McKart in a decent test. But the middleweight prospect ended up fighting Geard Ajetovic and winning quite widely. What did ppl think of Pirog? Big, lanky body puncher. Bit awwkard but seems to have a lot of raw talent.
