Khan made a rod for his own back with talk of being the youngest British world champion, but at the age of 21 has still to be regarded as a prospect. However each opponent or prospective opponent is criticized.
Interestingly, Fewkes is a 23 year old prospect. He turns down a career high purse to fight Khan and nobody bats an eyelid. In a few more months time these two fighters might be poles apart, and Fewkes may regret missing this fight.

I am sure if Fewkes speakes with his Manager he will know that the offer was £40k (£30k never came into it). All purses are gross and of course he will have expenses out of it as everyone does from their pay packet.

£40k for John Fewkes is a big payday even for a Khan fight. How much will he get for Gethin or Murray for that matter. Both fights won't gross him £40k.

If he's being told £30k then he should pick the phone up to Dean Powell himself and have it confirmed because it sounds like someones not being straight with him.

Yes, there does seem to be, as Tarby used to put it on 'Winner Takes All' a 'difference of opinion here'.

I was told, directly, by someone very close to John that Mr Powell made a 30k offer. I trust this person. But I'm just an outsider.

Regardless, I think they are looking for a bit more. Time will tell whether it will be a good call in turning it down. As it turned out, it didn't seem to be very wise for Thaxton - but they are at opposite ends of their careers, I suppose.

But Thaxton certainly got offered a fair bit more. Having the British title made the difference. Maybe Fewkes should just win the English, work his way to the British title & see what comes of his career that way.

I'd like to see Khan v Fewkes. I think Khan would outgun him a bit, in a match of quicksilver British lightweights. But if Fewkes isn't going to make that much vs Khan, the British superstar, on a big stage...It's a big ask for Fewkes because he'll have to give them the rematch clause, because he lacks the punch to cancel out Khan, etc etc.

Honestly, does young Fewkey really have it in him to pound out two twelve round decisions?

I'd like to see ppl stand up to Khan and Warren...I mean, if they beat guys like Khan and (as with Haye) Maccarinelli, then such fighters won't always be in a position to have everything in their favour.

Boxingchat why should an unbeaten fighter like Fewkes who has a great future ahead of him and will top the bill on Sky Television after one or two more fights risk all for 40K.

When out of that 40K he would have to pay his promoter (we know most fighters under contract to Sports Network have to pay 25% to their promoter I have been told and have advised a fighter from Sports Network and seen such a contract so surely he would have to pay Maloney a fee)

The manager also has to be paid, his trainer and training fees plus 4% board tax so what would be left of the 40K.

Why should an undefeated fighter take 40K to help boost another fighters career and a rival promoters show when Graham Earl it is rumoured received 75K and that was coming off a loss, John Thaxton was offered over £100K and Gomez who with no disrespect is past his best got £35K.

Fewkes and his team would be mad to accept £40K especially as it is rumoured in the trade that this fight could be on Sky Box Office it is does not take a lot to work out 200,000 buys at £14.99 if I was Fewkes I would not take anything less that £100K plus.

The fight can only get bigger Yorkshire v Lancashire.

But if the boot was on the other foot would Sports Network take the fight.

Fewkes career has been handled well by Glynn Rhodes and Frank Maloney to date.

Sweetscience by this answer alone show you are one of Sports Network employee, Or maybe Boxingchat just using a new name. Why not answer dapug question If the boot was on the other foot would Sports Network put their unbeaten fighter in with a flyer. Team Fewkes if they want this fight bad enough they will paid for it hold out for what you think you are worth.Plus the longer people talk about it the more the fight is worth and if you become British Champ you are looking at 100k plus.

i do not work for SN - i work in Insurance if your that interested

i try (with bolton Bias) not to be a hater, and judge boxers on there level not hype.

dapugs post was all about Fewkes losing

i agree with all his points if fewkes loses, but he hasnt

if Fewkes management feel he has no chance of winning then fair enough, he deserves more £££ to lose his '0'

but if he wins.......sky is the limit

Fewkes will be the challenger & only bring .001% of the support/revenue so obviously should only recieve the small end of the purse

I still can't see why people are taking percentages off a 40k purse as an example for not taking the fight. If he fights Gethin for about 10k the same percentages will still apply.
Fewkes may only get this one chance at the cash cow that is Khan.
Incidentally, how much was Thaxton offered for a Khan fight ?

I believe he was offered 100k and turned it down and lost for a purse of around 20-30k.
that was absolutely madness on Thaxtons part

turned down an easier fight in Khan for 4/5 times the money ... to take on romanov who is a beast

Is Fewkes making the same mistake ?
There were rumours about his weight when he pulled out of the Murray fight

Even So, Fewkes could take the fight and muller Khan, although the main impression I am getting is that his camp don't have the confidence.

If he where to beat Khan he would reap the reward afterwards.

It's not as if a loss would even hurt Fewkes - I just don't understand why he isn't grabbing this opportunity with both hands.

As for Thaxton, that is comical, and again signals short falls in the Hennessey set up.

Should have took the 40k
It's going to be a long road back for Fewkes
