He always struck me as quite a reserved lad. He was quite shy when he first came over, but as is usual with gyms, particularly in the North, he began to come out of his shell.
What I meant by the sparring, is that at his time there, he was working with Witter, Rhodes, Nelson, Pickering, Keaton and maybe even Thaxton for a while.
Everyone got to spar with everyone else - that's the way at Wincobank.
I did however note that he had retained some defensive frailties, often a trait of the Sheffield lads but often made up for by speed of reaction and head movement in his latest fight.
Everyone that I know never had a bad word for him.

Sorry with the questions…. I’m just intrigued with this boxer. He’s now extremely confident, at the National Stadium in February last he got booed when he made his winning speech, granted he did go on a little!! He beat a very popular fighter over here called Darren O'Neill who has got lots of support. It was a cracking fight which Darren started off slow as he normally does but came back into with a bang and won, it was easily the fight of the night.

Did Darren come off well in the sparing sessions with those big name fighters, did people expect big things from him if like he was expected to turn pro? Why did he leave the Sheffield set up?

It’ll be interesting which promoter signs him up. As I’m sure you are aware Pro boxing all over Ireland is really kicking off and he could make a bit of money here, but a fighter like Darren who be suited to Friday Fight Night on Sky, they would love him on there.

well done ken. I was just listening to rte and there certain that he will be treated unfairly in the final . Barnes was outclassed today and but deserved 3 or 4 points anyway.

Wouldn't want to piss on your parade bigped. But they had 2 of their guys draw in their semis and win on countback. The second fighter celebrated and seemed to know he had won before the paddle came up to confirm it. The first should not have been level at the final bell as the Cuban had landed enough to make it clear he had won. So I'm afraid to say that if it's even close then you may find that you're hard done by.

Hope Egan brings back the gold and a broad smile to your face though.

O3
Sutherland was a novice when he arrived at Wincobank at 15 - had only had a couple of fights.
Brendan took him under his wing and spent a lot of time on him. He looked a great prospect at 20 but returned to Ireland homesick.
I was shocked to see him against Degale - he used to box much more, now looks a brawler.
He used to spar well, but not everyone's cup of tea because of his big mouth and his moaning.

Cheers for that, its very much the same over here. I know many guys in the IABA do feel his mouth is a bit to big, but I still support him very much.

God Brendan must have seen potential in him if he took him to England to train him at such an early age? Look like we'll be seeing a good bit more of him in the pro ranks

I'm a bit of a luddite and don't know how to post a link
Look at www.thestar.co.uk click sport and then click boxing
There's an article about Sutherland with quotes from Brendan
Also another interesting article about Khan sparring with some Ingle boxers
Can anyone tell me how to post a link :TU:
