You just need to read between the lines.

Everyone knows that Billy has beeen a marked man for some time now. I think the dad (is it Ray?) resented paying Billy 10%. Rather than try to re-negotiate it just festered and became a bone of contention.

Couple with that the point that ricky's cheif jock strapper carrier and washer paul Speacks hated Billy with a passion (as did Billy him) then it was any excuse time.
