I see that Bobick's KO loss to Ron Lyle hasn't been mentioned by anyone here yet.
I recall that it was more or less the culmination of Lyle's Simon Pure career post prison, but can't remember exactly when that was.
I'm assuming around 1970, before Bobick won the Pan Am championship & was streaking towards the Olympic Games?

I've always wondered what would have happened if Ali had decided to eschew his demand for Norton to fight Bobick & his own title defense vs the totally undeserving ( & coming off of a L8 against Lorenzo Zanon ) Alfredo Evangelista in June of '77 & just fought the 38 - 0 Bobick in The Garden as had been the original plan?

Styles DEFINITELY make fights & had the rather shopworn Ali that met & struggled a bit with Evangelista met the big, strong, aggressive & hungry Bobick before his confidence was shattered by Norton, I believe that Ali may not have come out on top.
Sure, Bobick's chin could be exploited, but let's be realistic, by that point in time, Ali had lost much of the snap on his punches.
After Manila, his only two wins inside the distance were against the woefully out matched Jean Pierre Coopman & Richard Dunn. Fighter's whose own issues with punch resistance made Bobick look like George Chuvalo!
And, while Bobick lacked the quickness & volumous attack that Leon Spinks would bring to his own future contest with Ali & trouble him so much with a matter months later, Bobick was much bigger, more experienced, stronger & had a significant power advantage over Spinks to make up for it.
And with Eddie Futch in his corner, Bobick would have been VERY well prepared with an effective gameplan for Ali.
Therefore, I happen to believe that Bobick could very well have accomplished what superior heavyweights like Young, Norton & Shavers didn't get the official recognition for doing at around the same period of time & that's beat Muhammad Ali.

The Lyle vrs Bobick bout was in January 1971 at Fort Carson Colorado for the USA boxing team elimination tournament.
CBS and Mike Wallace were there filming it for a profile on Ron Lyle that was to air the following month on 60 MINUTES.
I wonder if the CBS archives has the entire two rounds in their vaults.
Ive only seen a clip of the second round knock out.
Bobick afterwards had 60 straight amateur wins up until the bout with Teofilo Stevenson.

I guess Ron Lyle decided to turn pro rather then wait for the Olympics
because he needed the money and he would have been a 32 year old amateur
boxer at Munich if he had won the Olympic Trials.

Thanks much Bruto for the details & info concerning the Lyle - Bobick fight.

Speaking of which, can you imagine ANY fighter today somehow managing to fit in 60 some odd sanctioned contests within about a year & a half's time?
That's just ASTOUNDING. Times sure have changed, eh?

Peace,
Jim

I agree on the Muhammad Ali vs. Duane Bobick fight, which I believe was supposed to take place, as contracts were signed
in November 1976.

Ali and Bobick was slated to take place between February 1 and February 18 in 1977, with Madison Square Garden
as co-promoter.

Styles is what makes fights, and Duane's pressure style and constant punching would have been a problem for the fading
Champion, and at worst would have lost a close fight.

Muhammad just didn't have the punch anymore.

It would have been a close fight, but the 'Judges' would rallied to pull it out again for Ali, setting up a lucrative rematch.
Your hypothesis on the fight that almost was is one that almost mirrors my own & could VERY well have occurred.
In fact, back in my youth, I used to imagine all sorts of different scenarios.
One of which was Bobick getting the nod & subsequently making his first title defense against an easy BIG $$$ opponent back in The Garden against ol' Jerry Quarry following Quarry's comeback KO over Zanon underneath Norton - Young. After which, he'd have been obliged to meet Norton. Resulting in the same brief affair we got in May of '77...

Or, in the event of a Bobick victory over Ali, we may have seen any one of another dozen or more possible scenarios. With an immediate rematch with The Greatest another likely possibility.
In which case... could Ali have pulled off what he had in Spinks II?
Possible, but IMO, far more unlikely as Bobick was a more skilled, learned, disciplined fighter than "Neon" Leon was. And, again, he'd have come in without all the chaos that allowed a well past it Ali to school the green Spinks. Eddie Futch would've had Bobick prepared like the true pro he was.
But, were Ali able to make an even remotely close fight of it, there's a good chance that sentiment would've gone the legends way...

Curiously both Duane Bobick's and Ron Lyle's compleat amateur records are incomplete(at least on the web).
I have been trying to find the exact date as to when the Lyle vs Bobick match at Ft. Carson CO. for the USA Boxing team had been.
and if either man had fought any other boxers in the same tournament before they fought.
But it would seem the bout was in mid-January as reportedly about a week later
Ron Lyle fought Kamo Saroyan, USA Vrs Soviet Union which was shown live
on ABC WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS January-23-1971.
Lyle TKO'd Saroyan in the second round.
I guess the controversary was that Lyle rushed Saroyan before the ref finished counting or was at least pausing to see if he could continue.
here is a very brief clip

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZZl8MRquSA

Saroyan(who was actually Armenian I read somewhere) was 89-9 going into the bout.
Duane Bobick would KO Saroyan in round three a year later Febuary 1972 in a USA vs USSR tournament.

29 year-old Ron Lyle 'flattened' Duane Bobick (19 1/2 year-old) by a devastating knockout in Round 2.

Duane, who was only 19 years, 8 months - and had a record of 31-8 when entering the ring against Ron Lyle.

Following that loss, Duane went on a 28-month / 60-bout unbeaten streak, enroute to entering the September 1972 Olympics.
What is your source for this info?
Would you please provide a link?
Did Ron Lyle knock out Duane Bobick twice on two different occasions ?
here is Ron Lyle's(incomplete)amateur record

http://cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/ronlyle.htm

The knockout at Fort Carson Colorado is mentioned in his biography OFF THE ROPES.
Also the 60 Minutes feature, unless they were using video-tape from months earlier,
gave the impression it was shot around January 1971,as they also
took Ron Lyle down to the Fifth Street Gym in Miami to spar 2 rounds
with Muhammad Ali,then flew him up to the Concord Hotel in the Catskills
to spar with Joe Frazier(who refused to spar with an amateur)
so Lyle sparred instead with Ken Norton.

Randy Stephens was a good, solid heavyweight that could have probably gone a lot further than he did had he been managed & moved properly.
Unfortunately, it appears to me that his people were in a bit too much of a hurry with him as far as the $$$ fights & rather through him to the wolves. Putting him in there with a far too experienced for him slick, spoiler in Harold Carter & then the much larger, big punching unbeaten contender Bernardo Mercado.
Sure, times were different back then, but still...
He rebounded well with a nice W10 over Stan Ward to make it into the top ten, but was quickly knocked out of it by Kenny Norton.

He earned his way to a cruiserweight world title opportunity several years later & gave Ozzie Ocasio a good go, but dropped a decision in the effort.
Then, in a bit of shenanigans, after a mostly inactive period of two years he was given another ( this time undeserved ) title shot vs unbeaten South African Piet Crous & looked woefully out of shape & unprepared as he was KO'd in 3 rather pathetic rounds. An obvious final money grab on his part as he never fought again.

I was a huge fan of Duane Bobick back in the day. I saw him live as a teenager when he outpointed Larry Middleton in The Garden.

In retrospect, I confess he was a bit overrated even though at the time I would tell anyone who would listen how great he was.

He had good power and stamina, but against the limited Fred Sanford Houpe he looked limited in pounding out a decision. He wasn't very hard to hit, and when he stepped up he was stopped. The Bobick-Wepner fight was fun entertainment, but I disagree with another poster who wrote that he beat Wepner easily. They both exchanged some whoppers, and Bobick was lucky to win the fight on cuts.
