Extraordinary book about the career and life of Jack Doyle. Also an interesting look at British society in the 1930s and golden age Hollywood.

Can't recommend it enough.

another vote for McRae from me.....brilliantly written, narrative flow....great insight into some fascinating characters (James Toney in particular), and through McRae, a compelling personal and emotional account too

I also recommend Budd Schulberg's Treasury of boxing reportage, a good mix of nostalgic and modern boxing journalism

I like to read about the boxers who aren't the top guys, being a big fan of boxing I get to know most of the stories about the top boxers anyway, as they are reported in the papers and boxing mags.

Give me a book about a journyman or a minor champ an i'm happy. Or some stories about guys that had 1 moment in the sun.

Can't believe I missed Liebling out.

I've got another book by Nock Tosche called King of the Jews.....its virtually impossible to read and I dont mind complex styles.

Conceited, supercillious stuff.

Yep Liebling was the best of the best, one of the great sports writers and funny as hell to boot. I've got all his books I think, including the non boxing "Back where I came from"

I might have to read that then. Without Rothstein there wouldn't have been a Lucky Luciano. Can't be that bad. The source surely writes itself.

It gives a good insight into the world of the 'opponent' , about going to the other guys backyard and knowing he's not got much chance of winning.

I enjoy Nat Fleischers style of writing also .. not always the most accurate .. but certainly one of the most enjoyable

Yeah it is a good read Terry, there is another one i want to get hold of written by James 'quick' Tillis, he gives his insights into the dealings of boxing.

Sorcery at Caesars by Steve Marantz is very good. All about the Leonard - Hagler fight and their careers. Kind of got overshadowed by the Four Kings which came out around the same time but is very good in its own right.

i have just heard of a new book out about teddy baldock the excellent british bantam from the 20's, out of poplar. it sounds like a corker for those who like reading about the lives of pugs from the dim and distant past. i'm just trying to trace the title but i do know that it was officially released at a do somewhere in the west end yesterday attended by the usual suspects (minter, magri, stracey) and many more. perhaps someone on here knows more????

Anybody read Joe Egans book ? if so what are there views on it

why would anybody want to read about him for .. average irish amateur boxer .. terrible pro boxer, but sparred with Tyson(along with probably hundreds of other people over the years) .. hardly much to fill the book eh?:oops:

Seconded. His experiences in Catskill are worth reading. I enjoyed it.
