You need to analyse the way in which the older Calzaghe wins.
Evasive footwork, 1-2-3-4, grab, break, retreat behind a jab or two, repeat. Lacy and Jones (quite understandably), shut up shop whenever Joe did this. Precisely because Froch isn't much good at using the old cup-the-forehead technique of Eubank, he's unpredictable to straight-charging punchers.
If Froch did fight Calzaghe, I'm sure he'd go with take-one-to-land-one, which would be very interesting. Despite Joe's famous chin, it's weaker than Carl's nowadays, and his power can no longer match the Nottingham man's. I think it's much closer than most of you.
Calzaghe at his best was great enough to beat all but one or two during his reign, but on those off-nights, he could've lost to the likes of a prime Francis, or Wharton.

I took my little brother to this fight for his birthday , its the 1st fight hes been to and it was a good choice , the atmosphere was absolutely electric as it always it at nottingham when carl fights , ive seen some people saying its a bit crap if he defends at nottingham but when the crowds beind him like that it must make him feel unbeatable , its no different to calzaghe using millenium stadium alot for his own support . theres no reason why he shouldnt defend at nottingham , anyone who went to this fight will tell you that , maybe 9000 seats isnt enough for a super fight , well just use the city ground instead , hed still sell that out too . 30000 + , hes becoming huge in notts now

WHooa hooo loved it baby.......... Well done Hen-man, utv and carl froch (i will stop pronouncing it frock!)
Blood and thunder, excellent shows all round, i think that pascal would be a world cahmp in 3-5 years anyway, but froch was immense.
Is his chin made of iron?

Froch has a far more attractive girlfriend than Calzaghe.

He didn't sell out the Trent on Saturday so there's no way he could do 30k in Nottingham.
I was there and loved the fight. I was dissapointed by how much of the crowd was made up ignorant, drunk football fans.
The booing of Pascal (at the end) was disgraceful.
And those chants of 'easy, easy'... brainless

Francis is a reasonable claim for a Calzaghe off-night, but the idea of the ridiculously one-paced Wharton winning is nonsense. Sorry fella, but while I enjoyed Wharton, all he had was a big left hook. Fidel Castro boxed his head off and got robbed, so even an 'off' Calzaghe would have won every round.

Bang on mate. I hadn't commented on that aspect of it as I was caught up in the buzz of the fight itself, but you're completely right regarding everything you've said here.
I suspected that it would kick off in the aftermath of Mckintosh's win as Rod Anderton had worn a Forest shirt into the ring and clearly had a few Forest 'boys' in the audience, but I think fortunately they were just as shocked and stunned as everyone else at such an abrupt ending.

good points. feckin football fans
can i also ask everyone-
was it just me, or did the croud volume go down considerably in the froch fight in the middle rounds? it seemed to me the crowd suddenly cottoned on this was a difficult fight and had that hushed kind of worried air that you get when the local favourite is having a difficult fight
also: re Mcintosh. everyone will be talking about the k.o, but to me his jab was even more impressive, landed about 10 times in the very short duration of the fight and perfectly set up the killer punch. he looked loose, fast, skilled and with no little power, looks a decent prospect IMO. I hadn't heard of him before never mind seen him

Agree with you on all counts fella. Definitely a bit of silence around the 5th, 6th as Carl seemed to be getting tagged with big shots far too frequently and looking as though he was blowing a bit hard. Could see worried faces all around me (including mine!).
Already said on another thread how impressed I was by Mcintosh for all the reasons you've mentioned, plus his air of confidence/belief - I really think he could go places. I'd only seen him before against Spartacus, which will have been a great learning curve for him. However, I didn't realise until yesterday that he's already 28 - anyone know why he turned pro so late or what he did as an amateur, as he looks like a real athlete?
With him and Cleverley in the light heavies it's nice to think we've got a couple of decent prospects coming through.

glad it wasn't just me dessie. the crowd noise (or lack) alone, made me think the fight was a lot closer than most cards had it. i think froch was 2-3pts down going into the last 4 rds
and i totally agree des, mcintosh's athleticism was particularly impressive he just looks like a 'natural' on several levels

From memory I had them dead even after eight and then when the pace slowed, Froch started employing his jab properly at last and as a result won three of the final four for me. Pascal's reliance on head and body movement also meant he was a lot easier to tag once he got knackered.

Froch did exceptionally well - make no mistake about it - but has something been lost in the aftermath?
Would anybody agree that Pascal is really more of a natural middleweight than a super middleweight?
I know Froch looks big at the weight - although he is not as big as Calzaghe - but didn't Pascal look a division below in there?
That said, I can't see anybody around that is going to trouble Froch overly. I do think he already beats Kessler - I know many of you will disagree.

I`m not overly convinced by Kessler beating Froch, I think he may go into cruise control like he did with Calzaghe and once again show a lack of urgency.
people are writing off taylor, I think he may have the beating of Carl because of his educated boxing, pascal timed Froch time and time again with the left hook and right hand, something that has lso been done many times before,I just see Taylor countering Froch out of the title .. maybe not exciting - but probably the correct way to get past froch.

Don`t see how you can have Froch beating Kessler.
Kessler punches hard, straight and fast. Froch would be wide open. Despite his chin, the ref would have to step in eventually.
Froch should give Mundine a shot and shut his smart arse Aussie mouth once and for all.

I cant comment on how it all looked on the TV.
But the guy was bleedin huge.
Usually when i see Froch at the weigh-in he looks a league above his opponent - not in this case.
Pascal struggled to get the last bit of weight off and was rumoured to be 180lb+ on the night.

You have got too be Joking , There is NO WAY WOULD MUNDINE want a shot , He picks up better money fighting stiffs than he would ever get fighting Froch. His next fight Shannon Taylor who at best his biggest claim too fame was he went a few rnd's with Mosley before getting ko'd and that was years ago , he's a shot fighter now and was never more than commonwealth level anyway
Just about the right opponent for Mundine , every time he has stepped up he's been spanked

I'm with Gomez on this one in that I was there and thought Pascal looked at least as big as Froch.
Gomez, when's he going to keep that bloody left hand up???!!!

I know, that`s why I want Froch to spank him as well.
I met "The man" in Sydney 7 years ago after he sparked out some poor kiwi bloke (April 2001). He was a one hell of an arrogant geezer. Nasty piece of work.

It was a fantastic scrap.
I thought that Froch took way too many cances though and a 'big' puncher would take him out.
His defence is just way too open!
That said he's a world champ now so all power to him.

Johnson as a voluntary maybe? Then Taylor or one of the up & coming Americans..
That might be interesting. It seems Johnson is going to fight Murat, but the thing about these elims is, it can make the champions have to wait. Johnson would be easier to bring over than Murat, I'd argue. Murat being with Sauerland who'll probably do anything he can to bring world title fights to Germany.
Anyone seen Marcus Johnson fights?
My guess is Dirrell wil get the push next year, with Showtime behind him. They have developed him on ShoBox with some exciting stoppage wins over Oganov and Hanshaw.
Wouldn't mind seeing a good pressure fighter like Zuniga get a shot, maybe even Miranda. That is if there's any delays and deferments getting the top contenders.

If he ever gets in the ring with Calzaghe he'l get taken apart.
Calzaghe would have got taken apart by aby top guys when he was a rookie champ. Otherwise, why didn't he? And why were the good foes all slightly on the side?
Hopefully Froch is able to stay active now, having beat a fresh, exciting opponent. I think he'll grow into one of the top fighters.
Much is made that Pascal isn't a top 10 super middle according to many rankings. However, looking at Ring mag, they still have Mundine ranked, and he's no longer at 168 pounds. Lacy is still rated, and he's no longer a top fighter. If Pascal wasn't top 10 on the strength of the Ikeke win, he should be after strong showing v Froch.
