A 1970s Argentina publication denigrating American boxing as being run by the mafia is pretty funny when you consider how boxing was conducted in Argentina in the 1960s and 1970s. Ive never seen so many horrible decisions, quick stoppages without even KD in favor of the hometown boy, etc barring possibly Germany in the early 2000s. Im as big a fan of Bonavena as anyone but he was killed (for all intents and purposes) by Conforte. Bonavena was a big kid. He was a good time charlie who I dont think thought about, or understood the repercussions of his actions and it rubbed people the wrong way on many occasions. I think he finally rubbed the wrong guy the wrong way and paid the ultimate price.

Someone asked about other champions killed- A friend of mine, Spyder Sabich, here in Tahoe was actually from down the hill in the tiny town "Kyburz". He was an Olympic hopeful and a ski champion, but his life was ended prematurely by Andy Williams ex wife in Aspen- Claudine Longet gunned him down in the bathroom, later saying it was an accident. With all her money and influence, she walked- really pissed off the locals around here !!

Ah Claudet Longet, from one of my favorite movies "The Party" with Peter Sellers. You just brought back a lot of memories.

How dare Bonavena be "extremely irritating and disrespectful" to the great gentleman and sportsman Ali???

The nerve of Oscar to do something like that to the saintly Mr. Ali!

I shriek with anger!

Ali was so sensitive about such things....probably worried a lot and shed tears over their callous behavior.
