Really? What leads you to believe you're smarter than people on here. That's a bit of a strange assumption. I don't give a shite what paper you read frankly, but The Sun is complete bilge, and it is inflammatory, dangerous bilge, it's not even the best newspaper for sport either, the sports writers for the broadsheets, in my opinion, are far better.
Like i said the Sun for sport is a good light hearted read, the broadsheets are probably more in depth in there analysis, but i usually find especially in football no matter what paper reports on a game they are a long way off my assessment of the match. Sorry James i didn't mean to sound like i was saying i was smarter than people on here, but the way some people get on there high horse or think they are better than people because they read a different paper or come from a different area just really annoys me .[/quote]
I have nothing against people reading whatever paper they want, but I think the Sun is insidious and corrosive in the way it portrays the world. What is annoying is that many of the journalists are extremely well educated graduates - who write dumbed down articles that pander directly to right wing illiberal minded people. I think it is a mistake to see the Sun as just a lighthearted bit of knockabout fun, lest we forget, this is the newspaper which was instrumental in getting Labour elected - and Tony Blair even met with Rupert Murdoch before the election to ensure editorial support. So the suggestion that the Sun is little more than a comic is rather naive.

Some of the things I say or post are "tongue in cheek" just a bit of banter basically yeah, no malice intended just like that post in the Frankly Speaking thread that people have blown all out of proportion.
As for The Sun you know my stance I don't read it and I often avoid the other tabloids as well, I'm not interested in scandal or who's shagging who. If people want to read it then it's their choice, it is a free country afterall.

i wouldnt judge anybody by the newspaper they read its pathetic , the fact i work in a job that i see people from all walks of life and that to pre determine what i thought of them would be critical i know from experience you cant judge a book by its cover this whole thread is getting rather carried away , if you dont like something that someone else says or does thats your perogative but you dont need to try your damndest to offend them , i dont fancy chinese girls but im not gonna sit here and tell every guy with a chinese wife that his wifes ugly , its up to him , its his decision . im not gonna argue and tell him hes wrong , i dont like her and thats it , life doesnt work like that ,
( just to make it clear what i just wrote above isnt necessarily my opinion it was just used to make a point.) and on the swan matter ive just seen somone above mention . polish people actually got arrested a couple of dooors from me for having dead swans in their house , after a few witnessed them catching them and reported it . but again as in point above im not gonna say all polish people eat swans , just as all sun readers arent necessarrally council estate unemployed , thick chavs as suggested by some of you

Personally I am a guardian reader and don’t have a problem with people reading what they want until they start spouting to me the latest crap they have read about 'broken Britain'.
My biggest issue is with the daily mail that portrays itself to be a paper of intellect. It is nothing more than a medium of driving hatred and resentment in people. At least the sun and the mirror know what they are. They would fully admit they create a paper where people can read and not have to think for themselves. They don't write about news it is just a different form of a glossy magazine feeding the masses with junk that fulfils their need to hear how bad Britain is and in some way gives their life purpose to know whatever problems they think they have got isn’t their fault.
If a person of intelligence or anyone who is willing to think reads these papers its fine it’s the ones who read and don’t know any better I worry about. I mean a war was gaining momentum and people at work were all talking about the front page of the sun. Was this about the war..... no about an alien spacecraft somehow destroying a wind turbine in Lincoln.
Anyone who says they read the sun and is intelligent is obviously missing the point. It’s nothing to do with intelligence it’s about having the lack of desire to understand and appreciate the complexities of living in a country of social and racial diversity. The ability to be free thinking, spontaneous, and passionate about a subject of worth, to believe in something positive rather than negative, to want to improve rather than complain.
But then again what do I know..... I am a free thinking loony liberal who buys the guardian and thinks he can make a difference.

The Daily mail is an evil tabloid shitrag masquerading as a serious newspaper, it's even more dangerous than the Sun, because the people who read it, actually think it is a proper newspaper. Everyone I know who reads the mail regularly, are the people who are always banging on about immigrants destroying this country and stealing our jobs.

Gutter-snipes are all around us in every walk of life, not just the press; and I include factions of the 'respectable' broad sheets in that. Would guess in the press corps, it's the majority and not the minority, who have hidden agenda's, and then it's up to the readership (who swallow whatever they'd 'like' to believe) to cast their own polarised view. Brainwashing occurs in all forms. Funnily enough, a hell of a lot of 'sensitive' stuff is'nt reported, thats the big worry.
Anyhow, The Star's a bargain today.

That's English Swan's, for ENGLISH PEOPLE! Give the swans back to the English.
Anyway, why does anyone care, we ain't even allowed to eat the bastard things. Oh no, the Queen can have swan and chips every night if she wants, but we're stuck with pigeon and filthy spanish patatas fritas.

Speaking of the Daily Mail it reminds me of the Russian spy scandal and the attempt to defame that innocent guy over the poisoning of Litvinenko, we all know it was MI6 who knocked him off but nope they have to put a guys life at risk by putting photos of him and his family all over the tabloids.

the mail is evil, as someone on here would put it
fact
All papers just pitch to their readership anyway....The odd hatred thrown at the mail is bizarre and excessive...people are always saying it's racist and homophobic because they question immigration and gay marriage / adoption. Big deal.
They go over the top....it's a paper for traditional and old-fashioned person. To say it's dangerous is just laughable.
The Guardian likes to think it's taking the moral high ground, but just finds easy targets to hate and spew on - Israelis, AMericans, any whites that don't share their perspective. They love to defend Muslims; who have the most homophobic and 'outsider' negative creed...the very thing the Guardian claims to hate.
All papers are just a point of view. I suggest people read a variety of papers to get a rounded view. Why trust one source and not another?

The Sun is trash and should be burned for the hateful, biased, bigoted garbage it spews in a cynical fashion. it repeats the party line for Rupert Murdoch and often fails to tell the "news" - rather a completely misrepresented load of tripe that bears no relationship to fact.
Should be ashamed of yourself for defending it.

The Sun and the MAil both sell about 3.5 million each and are read by 15 or more million people in the UK (the average copy of a paper is read by about 2.5 people or something.)
SO - Mr stuff, you are effectively putting down 15 million people in the UK at one swoop of the hand. A generalisation don't you think?
ISn't that the kind of thing people on tehir high horse such as yourself claim to despise?

At the end of the day, the sun is an easy read, which takes about 20 mins to get through.
Because you read it doesn't make you simple, but it's certainly pitched at that level.
I mean, who has the time to read the Guardina from cover to cover!!!??? You're talking a good few hours to plow through that and only the retired, students and civil servants have time for that

The Sun is written with an average reading age of 7 in mind. The mail, iffy as it can be, usually pays some attention to facts and reporting, unlike The Sun which has very famously made stuff up to make the story better. Including false interviews, witness staements and other joys.
I don't "depise" making generalisations. The paper is moronic, bigoted and blatantly carries its agenda for all to see. it certainly makes no effort to "report" the truth, merely simplify complicated issues to support Rupert Murdoch's continued insult to our intelligence.
Anyway, maybe the 15million people who read it aren't all taken in by it, or are simply wanting to look at the tits.

I thought it was 8 - but not worth splitting hairs about...the journalists are well-known to be very bright and a lot of the writing /headlines are clever, if unsophisticated.
The SUn also has a decent sense of humour and it does actually have some science, city and genuine news as well as issues analysis.
Clearly this is sparse and basic - as you say the writing is intended to be understood by any individual with the reading standards of an eight year old...
But isn't that as much of an indictment of the British eduction system and the dumbing down of the majority rather tha directly the SUn's fault?

My issue isnt really with the quality of the writing which is very very high - even with the slant toward the slower readers. My issue is that that same simplicity is applied to the actual reporting and they frequently pervert the truth of the stories to suit Rupert Murdoch and his editor's agenda.
I could probably pick up tomorrow's issue and find ten plus factual errors that change the perception of the "news" significantly. You also can't ignore their complete lack of ethics - faking interviews with stars (been sued for that several times), waging hate campaigns against celebrities (which Elton John sued them for) and just making shit up (Lockerbie and Hillsborough).
