Loads of people did this but he did try to hype up Haye - Mac as a 50-50. I'm not even sure he ever picked a winner.

Let's be honest, it was always going to be an early Haye KO. Totally different class.

goz it's interesting i wasn't on this site at the time but was posting or reading two other british based forums

on 1 something like 75% were going for Haye by spectacular ownage, on the other more like 60%

why, did the denizens of boxrec also call haye/macca a 50/50 fight?

I know. That's why I said loads of people did it.

Anybody who couldn't see the huge gap in class between the two beforehand bought into the hype and were emphatically proven wrong.

The class gap wasn't the only issue, though. Haye's weight - which he talked up a lot - plus the fact that he was a chinny boxer against a puncher. Easy being clever after the fact.

Well that assumes I wasn't very confident beforehand, which I actually was. And the reasons why I was confident became evident within two rounds.

In case you didn't notice, Macaroni was starched by Lee Swaby, and 'chinny' David Haye was stopped on his feet, exhausted after punching himself out, in about his tenth fight against a very seasoned former world champion Carl Thompson. Every other time he gets up and knocks his opponent spark out.

Its easy to say after that if Macaroni hadn't dropped his hands and retreated with his chin in the air, he'd have lasted and taken Haye into the trenches, which is what Enzo Calzaghe tried to say. But the reality is that Haye's class would have starched him early no matter what he did.

Face it you and many other people were very wrong.

:TU: it's a toss up between doing that and watching warren's face as to which was more fun

I had an argument before the fight with a 'casual fan' who assured me it ws 50/50 and scoffed at my assertion that Haye was infinitely classier and more athletically gifted. suffice to say he hasn't questioned my judgement since

Against Lee Swaby, Maccarinelli had been out drinking the night before and punched himself out. Defending Haye against being chinny is much the same as defending Amir Khan.
He got knocked out as an amateur, he was down and out on his feet against a super-middleweight in Mock, he was down and stopped against an old man in Thompson, down against Mormeck and down against Barrett.

Haye had look vulnerable in more than just the Thompson fight.

Mock had him on queer street big time and Mormeck had him down and in trouble. Macaranelli appeared confident, didn't have apparent weight issues like Haye, I really don't think you can knock someone for calling the fight 50/50.

For what it's worth I thought Haye would win but wasn't certain.

I presume you cleaned up on it financially as the result was so patently obvious to you?

:D :TU: Yes I did. I bet on Haye to win within 6 rounds. That was my pick because I thought that Macaroni might be able to squeak through the first 3 rounds if he was lucky.

Defending Haye's chin is like defending Amir Khan's? Yeah right.

Haye was stopped ON HIS FEET by a fantastic former world champion and warrior in about his tenth fight.

Mock caught Haye with a temple shot that landed incredibly awkwardly, and Haye got up, as he always does, and sparked the guy out.

Then he took a knee against the undisputed cruiserweight world champion who caught him with a great shot when he was cornered, and then Haye got up and sparked him out a few rounds later.

On the other hand Khan was all over the place from a not that good punch from the feather fisted Willie Limond and a washed-up, wildly swinging Michael Gomez.

To hurt Haye, Macaroni would have had to land good punches on Haye which he had neither the skill, nor the whiskers to achieve.

Gomez was clearly a flash knockdown, Khan was not all over the place.

Haye did not take a knee against Mormeck, his legs splayed and he almost did the splits. Against both Mock and Mormeck he got up and was clinging on for dear life. Watch it on Youtube if you don't believe me. Jim Twite flattened Haye as an amateur.
As for washed-up, Thompson was over 40 when he fought Haye, who was knocked down before he was stopped and Adam Booth actually threw the towel before he got battered - hardly a great warrior performance. Mormeck was 35 and hasn't boxed since, although I woldn't take anything away from that performance.
Stop trying to rewrite history.

These are off the top of my head. I'm so worn out of his hyperbolic exaggeration on these things. Hatton doesn't possess Margo's punch resistance, so if he took the same sort of shellacking that Cotto gave out in those first 5 rounds, there's be no Ricky Hatton. people complete overrate Hatton based on one world-class performance and then dominating guys who he should have beaten.

Steve, if you read this - you're entitled to your (undoubtedly) informed opinion, but please think before you make such OTT claims such as those.

Bunce is good at his job but can be annoying, usually when he's hyping someone up and while doing that can pull other good fighters down (Dawson, damek, Cunningham).

Good that there is someone who isn't so dry and formal - can anyone imagine "Nicky Piper's Boxing Hour" for instance? Had to laugh when the young guy who presents with Bunce tried to sum up the Huck and Mosley cards i.e. Huck in sensational fight (yeah right) and Mosley in one of the best fights ever (and so on). Bunce goes, "That's the first time I've ever heard Marco Huck and Sugar Shane Mosley in the same sentence."

I enjoyed the first fight on the German bill, Licina against that South American, It was a cracking bombs away affair. The Huck fight was a total mismatch though, I don't think the Captain took a shot all night
