No, just mired in ignorance of the sport. Never mind, so long as yo' can represent, yo!bjermaine wrote:at least i'm not racist.
- Say what you will about Too Tall Jones, but as an older novice the guy was no joke. He stepped into pro boxing and got out with a perfect record.bjermaine wrote:http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?hu ... &cat=boxer
Let's come down to earth a bit. Montes won against Manuel Ramos on a DQ. Montes was the only Jones opponent with more wins than loses on his record. Jones' career lasted all of three months.BroughtonRulesRefuge wrote:- Say what you will about Too Tall Jones, but as an older novice the guy was no joke. His best win against Fernando Montes who notched a win over title contender Manuel Ramos, lost on a 4th rd cut to Eddie the Animal Lopez, and went 3 rds against Duane Bobick prior.
TT whacked him out in a single round, something undefeated Fulilangi, Mercado, and Alex Stewart couldn't accomplish afterwards, and Mercado got two consecutive cracks at Montes.
I know someone taped at least a few if not all his bouts, but I've never seen them.
- Too Tall shares space with era contenders and big names on Montes' record no matter how much you wish to disparage Jones.raylawpc wrote: Let's come down to earth a bit. I'm not disparaging Jones. Had he stuck with it, he might have developed into a good or even great fighter. He certainly has the athleticism for it.BroughtonRulesRefuge wrote:- Too Tall shares space with era contenders and big names on Montes' record no matter how much you wish to disparage Jones.raylawpc wrote: Let's come down to earth a bit. Now that Too Tall fought at a twice a month pace is also targeted as a negative. No wonder he got out of boxing. He could be earning a multi million dollar contract instead of the chicken bones they threw him in boxing to listen to the "you suck" crowd screaming at him.

But I think it is insulting to the good and great fighters mentioned in this thread to put Jones into this group.

Jones fought Montes , who has some good fighters on his resume.BroughtonRulesRefuge wrote:- Too Tall shares space with era contenders and big names on Montes' record no matter how much you wish to disparage Jones.raylawpc wrote: Let's come down to earth a bit. Of the fighters listed here, my two favorites are Barry and Marciano - although I've always been intrigued by McAuliffe and his career.Expug wrote:Jones fought Montes , who has some good fighters on his resume.BroughtonRulesRefuge wrote:- Too Tall shares space with era contenders and big names on Montes' record no matter how much you wish to disparage Jones.raylawpc wrote: Let's come down to earth a bit. Remember though, boxing is a small community. You are gonna fight guys who at some point have been in with big names.
Heck, I fought a guy who fought Gerald McClellan. Another who fought Matthew hilton.
I was just a prelim guy.
Jones might have done something if he started earlier, he was a tremendous athlete. But, I thought he looked pretty awkward in his debut against Yaqui Meneses. that fight was real strange.
My pick here would be Jimmy Barry. He had the most fights and wins.I guess its a longevity thing as much as anything .
He had the most fights without an off night.
- Here's the guy who first whipped Mr. Money before Castillo ever tore him a new one. Seldom gets any love, but it is what it is:Ambling Alp wrote:None of these guys have a lot of big wins. All had draws and/or fights where they were lucky to get the decision. I guess I will go with Mayweather. He had few close calls and at least fought a few decent opponents. Marciano probably deserves to be #2.
I wondered how long before someone inevitably mentioned Ibeabuchi. This guy has to be the most over-rated myth in contemporary Boxing historyJaywheel wrote:Ji Won Kim

There's no thought about it. Louis was well past it. I think we can safely assume the result would have been much different 10-12 years earlier.Hounddog wrote:Marciano, all though some thought Joe Louis was over the hill when this fight took place, but a win over the brown bomber is a massive accomplishment and by KO i might add.

Indeed. In 1941, an eighteen-year-old Marciano six years short of his pro debut would've been no match for a Louis at the peak of his powerstzyuforever wrote:There's no thought about it. - Therein is your problem, the legacy of Rocky infringing on the legacy of Joe.I Feel Fine wrote:There is a difference between saying that Marciano beat someone who was still a top rated fighter and saying that the win is a massive accomplishment. Its a good win over a top contender, not a great win over a great champion, and it says nothing of how Louis might have done in his prime.
