I am clutching at straws here but to my mind most of the formers boxers that stay involved in TV seem to look after themselves. Macklin, Froch, Ward, Mckenzie, Nelson, Haye, Mora and Malinaggi.

I thought it was OK-ish, but the way he said before any answer "I'm not going to lie to ya Tris..." meant I couldn't finish it!
Found it a hard listen. Don’t think life post boxing has been kind.

Buddy Mcgirt was a good listen. What do you think of sammy the bull gravano? “Great guy!” What do you think of John gotti? “Great guy!” Paul smith ? “Great guy!!”
Yeah was a good listen I thought too

He has mentioned being called fat when he was younger so wonder if all this is routed in that.

As for the recent pods I have listened to:

Martin Murray - enjoyable listen, Murray got mixed up all in kinds when he was younger but has been a model pro and really respects the sport.

Tony Jeffries - doesn't hold back about the shady side of boxing, which was good to hear about. we know it happens but no one ever says anything on tv about it. jeffries does here.

Pat Barrett - one of my favourite ones so far. Barrett refuses to buy into the "reformed character" narrative dixon tries to lead him into. get the impression barrett is a tough man - philosophical but you wouldnt want to mess with him.

Frankie mentioned a few times how
Highly rated Stephen Smith was..I remember that
Being the case but completely forgot how highly rated Stephen was.
Also was nice to hear Frankie reliving
a few stories and laughing away to himself.
I always got the impression he was a
totally serious character. Seemed to love his Am days so much

Wonder if other nation's boxers are the same.

Hard to imagine all hell breaking loose in Team USA's hotel because of Tim Bradley doing a poo in Andre Ward's pillow.

i think a poster jmac here who was a ref- judge on the usa team back around 2007 said that wilder almost got into a fight with a guy from the kazhk (?) team at a hotel after an event

same guy met tyson and big john at the junior worlds in i think 2006 and said they were both top fellas

While Tyson gives it the big one to sell fights, and I do think Klit still hates him, but everyone always speaks well of him, for me he always came across as a good bloke.
I remember Bellew defending him over the religious comments he made. Folk forget that most top pro's were international amateurs and go way back to trips and squads in their youth.

I really enjoyed the Gavin episode but at the end I wasn't completely clear what he thought the reasons for him underachieving (in his own reckoning) were.

He skirted around a few different things. Maybe he's not completely sure himself.

if he'd gotten that split decision vs bundu to win the euro title, would we still have him as an underachieve case? was a world title pretty much required for him not to underachieve, given his am accomplishments?

Yes. Olympic Gold, too.

well tbf, tons of guys who win world am gold dont win olympic gold, usually it's only a few who pull off the double and most are the career amateur types who try it several times

i believe him winning the world gold was a bit of an upset?

According to Frankie everything had gone according to plan! Not winning the Euro title was just a bad decision.
The Brook fight was just that Kell had his number because Frankie was in the best shape of his life.
After that Gavin just gave up and his heart wasn't in it for his subsequent losses.

He was strangely insistent that he wasnt that under-sized at 147 and couldn't really do 140! I don't see it, Brook looked like a middleweight next to him. But then he was advised by Kerry Kayes for a while! Maybe he was just not very good at weight-cutting, some are better than others.

It was more that he clearly thinks he underachieved.

Maybe Frankie was a victim of being a clean fighter? To have single digit body fat percentage and still maintain your power, strength and energy without 'help' is doable with freaky genetics only. Anybody who has dieted down to that level clean will testify.to that.

If he needed a bit of flesh about him to hold onto his strength he would always look undersized and underpowered versus anybody not playing with a straight bat.

Which one was advised by Kayes? I’m pretty sure he was close to Frankie.

Sorry, Mick, I wasn't clear - I thought Frankie was advised by Kayes. Gonna struggle to get better nutrition advice than that!
