Well, America wouldn’t have happened, or Wilder, which really made him. Podcasts with Peter now barely mention boxing. Even his new S&C coach has a very colourful past.
Absolutely. Can you imagine Duran or SRL saying I will only box Hagler or Hearns or each other if I get 70% of the purse and the contract is signed yesterday, and then boxing a welterweight the equivalent of Chisora, for a third time, instead?
Duran fought plenty of journeymen in-between big fights. Let's stop pretending the greats didn't fight bums too. Some where downright pitiful no hopes with no wins at all.big lennox wrote: ↑20 Jun 2023, 08:59Absolutely. Leonard wasn't very active at all after the great Hearns 1 win. Duran and Hearns also had periods of inactivity, ticking over fights.handsofstone wrote: ↑20 Jun 2023, 11:46Duran and the like fought regularly though, big differenceHomicideHenry wrote: ↑20 Jun 2023, 11:03Duran fought plenty of journeymen in-between big fights. True, but SRL did manage to box Hagler, Hearns x 2, Duran x 3 and Benitez as well as many other excellent fighters.mickey1975 wrote: ↑20 Jun 2023, 12:34Leonard wasn't very active at all after the great Hearns 1 win. Fury to date has beaten an ancient Wlad (the same year he tested positive for Wildboar meat) and Wilder x3. A waste of a talent.
That 4 kings era was something else and we are unlikely to see the likes of it again.big lennox wrote: ↑20 Jun 2023, 13:07True, but SRL did manage to box Hagler, Hearns x 2, Duran x 3 and Benitez as well as many other excellent fighters.mickey1975 wrote: ↑20 Jun 2023, 12:34Leonard wasn't very active at all after the great Hearns 1 win. I obviously get why people love the fight but I think it’s a case of recency bias.mickey1975 wrote: ↑21 Jun 2023, 04:17 I don’t think tonyevs, The Gratest and co should listen to the George Groves podcast today. Mauricio Suliman, when asked about the best ever fight for the WBC title had Fury v Wilder 3 on top. He considered Mike Tyson winning the belt and Chavez, etc but couldn’t get away from ‘one of the greatest fights ever seen’. George Foreman said similar recently. That’s legacy.
Suliman said Fury was wobbled again right at the end of the tenth. I thought the first knockdown was the heaviest of Fury’s career. Anyway, legacy stuff, like the Wlad fight. The lads would be horrified to hear what was said about the lack of boxing from Fury.maverick23 wrote: ↑21 Jun 2023, 04:32I obviously get why people love the fight but I think it’s a case of recency bias.mickey1975 wrote: ↑21 Jun 2023, 04:17 I don’t think tonyevs, The Gratest and co should listen to the George Groves podcast today. For me it was a pretty one sided fight bar the knockdowns. Even with the knockdowns I never thought Tyson wouldn’t get up. Strange really considering how big a puncher Wilder is.
I thought Fury was on the verge of losing that fight in the 4th round and despite Fury turning it round again, Wilder caught him hard again in the 10th.maverick23 wrote: ↑21 Jun 2023, 04:32I obviously get why people love the fight but I think it’s a case of recency bias.mickey1975 wrote: ↑21 Jun 2023, 04:17 I don’t think tonyevs, The Gratest and co should listen to the George Groves podcast today. Yeah - he was wobbled a little in the 10th but I still thought he won the round pretty wide and didn’t think he was actually in trouble strangely. Not sure I’d agree it was the heaviest knockdown of his career. The knockdown in the 12th of the first fight takes some beating but who knows.mickey1975 wrote: ↑21 Jun 2023, 05:00Suliman said Fury was wobbled again right at the end of the tenth. Strangely despite the knockdowns I never thought he was about to lose in the 4th. I obviously get why people did but I never felt on edge like I’d be when almost anyone else is floored a couple of times. Perhaps it’s because I’ve seen Fury’s powers of recovery to be so good over the years.garethhop wrote: ↑21 Jun 2023, 05:04I thought Fury was on the verge of losing that fight in the 4th round and despite Fury turning it round again, Wilder caught him hard again in the 10th.maverick23 wrote: ↑21 Jun 2023, 04:32I obviously get why people love the fight but I think it’s a case of recency bias.mickey1975 wrote: ↑21 Jun 2023, 04:17 I don’t think tonyevs, The Gratest and co should listen to the George Groves podcast today. The action was incredible throughout. It was a stunning end to a fascinating trilogy that had prettt much everything.
