I played from about 6 until late teens then gave it away for a few years and had another stint for about 3 seasons at the age of 20.
A good mate plays WACA comp in WA, He played in England for 2 seasons then got some sort of Arthritis hip problem and had to give it away poor bastard was in the under 18 Aus side and played in the same side as Gilchrist and Langer as a junior for WA.
Not all bad but we get free tickets to the cricket in Perth as he is good friends with a few of the players.

thats a good effort Ben, apart fomr the charity game I get called up for when we meet some of the stars, competetively i faced the queensland's 2's captain at rickmansworth a few years back had been clocked at 82 mile an hour.

got bruised through my pads!!!

but stood a yard otuside my crease and just had a go, got 40 odd in the end. Enjoyed it despite being covered in bruises and shitting myself. (not literally)

I played up until the age of 18 then packed it in. Then just sporadic games for mates teams over the years. I used to be quite a handy wicketkeeper or batsman/fielder back in the day! Would like to get back into it but dont really have the time these days.

thats the thing, we woudl be playing some games near hastings, like 2 hours away, and as an opening bat if you get ajaffer its a long old way and time to go just to stand in a field for 4 hours.

I quite enjoy fielding actually, I've taken a fair few TV catches over the years!! I once sprinted about 20 yards along the boundary rope and caught a ball diving at full length landing just inside the rope. It would have made it for a 6 I reckon the fella was right pissed off!

I haven't played much since school, half-decent bowler. As our school's first team had Graeme Swann (now of Notts, and once of England) and his brother Alec (2 centuries in 2 roses matches for Lancs last year) opening the batting, it was best to work on your bowling, because you weren't guaranteed much time at the crease, as a rule!

True its a right pisser. I never opened, always batted around 4-6 but have had a few quacks and its not nice at the best of times nevermind 2 hours from home starving!!

I was a decent bowler but attacked way to much with the bat. The coach didn't appreciate me dancing down the wicket on the second ball i faced and trying to hit fours and sixes( sometimes it payed off)

. I started about num 5 and ended up about 9-10 by the time i gave it away.

thing is i got fed up with it, id say im not playing this weeknd skip, im at the cricket/ rugby sat and its gonna be a leo sayer with my bruv.

Every week without fail id get a call and the the emotional blackmail, ive had a drop out and ill cancel it then if you cant play..blah blah blah.

so they didnt cancel it id turn up in various states of disarray dis-insterested and generally pissed off that i wasnt in bed after id taken a week off playing.

that aint the way to play a sport that takes 7 + hours. So in the end i had a huge row with the skipper and told him to poke it.

By the way for the Brits, there's a really good 24 page Ashes pullout in the Times today that is well worth a look. Loads of good reading and analysis in there.

I was chatting with a bird I know at the weekend and her and her mate were out with Pietersen not too long ago. She thought he was a bit of a twat!

My bro plays for south devon at the mo (league below exmouth) but knows a fair few of the exmouth boys. Very good club, like you say, produced some good players over the years too.

Matt Wood is meant to be off with the England Academy this winter I think? He's playing well for somerset at the mo.

So do you cheer somerset on then? Fat Ian Blackwell for a surprise call up to the england winter tour

They'll be taking a few spinners, and he's turned it a bit this season.... not to mention the runs he makes

There seems to be a bit of a consensus that he's a bit of a tube.... I heard a few of the notts boys didn't like him too much when he was there.

yes mate lived in exmouth from 10 to 18, consider it my spitritual home if you like, where i found out bout life spending your formulative years.

Went to Exeter college to my a levels then ended up in london via Northampton mate.

I dont go back find it depressing lot of old school mate all doing the same old shit in the same old pubs n clubs 15 years on. Lost touch with most my school mates.

Played rugby for Exmouth and exeter college as well as Devon and south and south west also. Along with Darren Crompton who was a big pal of mine back in the day, he went on to make it as a pro and play for england on tour of hell. Plays for Bristol now

Follow bath at rugby and make sure i catch them when i can when they play in london.

He plays for South Devon (In Newton Abbot)... in Devons A divison

If you saw somerset on sky last week against Warwicks you'd have seen him on TV.... dressed as a fairy (it was his birthday) and being very pissed in the crowd along with 14 Santas a few elves and 4 reindeer

When I was at Plymouth Uni (Based in exeter campus) I had a couple of classes a week up at Rolle College campus in Exmouth... never went out on the piss in the town though.

I still go back a fair bit..... see the boys and try and head up to north devon and cornwall whenever possible for a surf. Like you say though..... so many of them are still doing exactly the same thing as when I left devon.... still in the same pubs, with the same birds, misbehaving exactly the same... nothing changes

Do you know any of the lads who played for Newton Abbot (Rugby) then.... I think a few of them have played for Devon and South West over the years..... although I think you might be 5 or so years ahead of me and my mates.

im 32 but we used to play newton abbot every year, they had a pretty good side at the age of 16 or so.

We beat them twice in the "fishermans cup" - fornicate knows why it was called that mind in a rugby league, when i was 16, when the top four under 16 sides out of 20 or so went into the semis and i cant remember who we beat but then beat Plymouth Albion int he final 9.-6 in a game that wasnt too pretty to watch.

we had a pretty fierce rivarly with Newton abbott, they had a ginger haired number 8 who was pretty useful as i recall. Neer enjoyed playing against him as a scrum half that was for sure.

ah rolle college used to cycle past it everyday going into town, i lived right above orcombe point on foxholes hill, was a fornicating great place for a kid i can tell you.

Sport beaches and birds, fanbloodytastic.

Yeah, thats 7 years over me..... I remember the fishermans cup though, haven't heard that mentioned in years

I think our year beat Brixham in the final.... 1996 i think

I Was never a proper player myself mind, but a lot of mates were so used to spend a fair amount of time down the rugby club.

well congrats for that mate.

ive actually got our game on video which is funny to review from time to time. I packed up playing seriously when i left the area a combination of injuries, spednign too much time playing so the fun went out of it, and failing my a levels cos all i did was play rugby and train meants somink had to go. Then i went to N'hampton passed my exams with flying colours and came to london. The rest as they say is history...........

Yep.....You forgot to add old people though.... they're not brilliant, but they're fornicating everywhere in Exmouth, Sidmouth, Teignmouth, Torquay.... well... just Devon really

Cricket ground at Exmouth is lovely.... right by the seafront 8)

there also that walk behind that takes you into town via the deer leap, a nice pub.

the old folk didnt bother me as a kid, just used to overtake them when they were driving down the sea front on my bicycle, serious they drive that slow.

it is a nice place but too quiet for me these days.

Yeah, I've been there a few times. I was at uni in Sheffield, my best mate from school was at Exmouth. A quality culture clash, I had some mad little weekends down there when I'd go and see him.

I've definately been in that pub you mentioned.

Yeah... know what you mean.... Being from Newton Abbot, Torquay was always our seaside haunt and drinking destination.... little busier than Exmouth, and not too quiet so its still a laugh when I go back down.

I'm leaving London in a few weeks and going away for the winter..... haven't decided about when I get back in April.... whether to spend the summer back down in sunny devon, or back to london.... decisions decisions

:) I suspect it'll be ok for the first few weeks.... and then i'll realise theres much more to be doing in London.
