No, I didn't, Rob.
You?
No I didn't but I want to. I was hoping there was somewhere online where you could buy it. Otherwise it means sending $30 via airmail. Which is a tad risky.

Tom,
I call him yesterday, but he is in such pain that he can't talk, I was able to ask him if he had seen a doctor, he said yes, but he couldn't tell me what the doctor said, I'll try him again today.

Pug, Jackie McCoy used to tell a story about the time Mando Jr. told his dad he wanted to box. The former champ wanted to discourage his son and told him, "Boxing is dangerous, you get get hurt." The boy answered, "I don't care". Mando then told his son, "You could end up with a broken nose and scars on your face, like me." Junior replied, "I don't care, I wanna be a fighter." Mando then tells him, "There are dishonest people in boxing who will steal your money." Once again, the boy answers, "I don't care, I want to be a boxer." Frustrated, Mando tells the boy, "You could end up talking like I do." Upon hearing that, the young man answered, "Maybe I'll try baseball."

[quote="scartissue"]Joe Miceli passed away Friday night. Feels like the boxing fraternity is getting smaller. I met Joe a couple of years back at a WBHF event, I believe Frank has posted a photo of him at the event. RIP Joe.

Feels like the boxing fraternity is getting smaller. Yeah, have to agree. But the big fighters make more dough than ever. One of DeLLa Hoya's fights is more than Louis and Marciano made together. The fraternity, fans, interest is on the decline. Remember The Sporting News? Featured baseball ,horse racing ,and boxing. Sports Illustated ,when it began in the early 50's, always had a feature article on boxing. The true boxing gyms aren't just about extinct. The arenas are gone with their weekly cards. Go to the Olympic during the 60's and you'd see the regulars. Same at any local arena. Before and between fughts you'd get together and swap stories and opinions. You'd stay in touch. You got to know people. How can you go to Atlantic City or Las Vegas and create a brotherhood ? It's all such a flash. No way. When I watch Pay Per View the only living thing sitting next to me is my dog,Molly. And she only likes the female fights.
Yeah Scar. Maybe that's another reason I'm on the forum. You,Frank, the Pugs, the Nuts, and Bennies. Rick Farris, who doesn't let us down.We know Gato is out there too. Hello Tom. Most of us have never gotten acquainted on a personal level. It'll happen. If not, our words to each other have the power to keep our BoxRec Fraternity together.
Classic West Coast Boxing. I hope the younger fellas out there aren't afraid to jump in and add some good stuff to the thread. That's how you keep a boxing fraternity from getting smaller.

The Baltazar family history is like a history of the Jr. Golden Gloves in Los Angeles boxing. A book will be out in due course that will reveal not just the boxers and their fights, but where they came from and how it all started, the true foundation of L.A. boxing in the post WW2 eras. In that, you will read a lot more about the Baltazars, and others as well. This can only be written by a true L.A. boxing insider.

I remember when I was a little kid in Chicago I used to like watching the Today show. They broadcast from Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. It came on early. Low key. News, sports, guests. Dave Garroway was the host. Tall guy with light hair(couldn't tell the color.Black and White TV then),horned rimmed glasses. At the end of his show he always held his hand out showing his palm and he'd say,"Peace." He seemed like an intellectual, but didn't put on no airs. Nice guy in my opinion. His wife had some sort of nervous breakdown and committed suicide later on. Kind of sketchy on that topic.
I remember Frank Blair would do some news and sports. On a Monday after the NFL played, the Today show had the most comprehensive reporting of the football games. It was something like 5 minutes. Nothing spectacular. Always on how the football Giants had done. They were a pretty good team, but couldn't get by the Baltimore Colts for the Championship. I remember the Today show would only show two or three game highlights of the football games on Monday. If your team was in last place, you didn't get on unless you played the Giants.
How about Jack Lescoulie? Nice wide friendly smile. Did the interviews with some of the guests. The weather also.
There was always a female guest host. Someone who sang like Helen O'Connell or Kay Starr. They'd always sing a song everyday they co hosted for the week.
The part I liked the best though is that the camara man would point the camera to the big bay window and show the New Yorkers outside. Some would be walking on there way to work. Others would stop and look through the window. The men with their fedoras and overcoats. The ladies with the white gloves and dresses with the petticoats. I always liked it when it was raining outside. The streets were wet and the traffic would be backed up. You could see the brake lights come on of the cars and trucks and buses. The exhaust coming out the tail pipes as the they were waiting for the lights to change. Music was played in the backround. Something smooth like Mancini or Tony Bennett.
OK here's a boxing story to go with all this. One morning Rocky Graziano is on the show and he's going to make an antipasto salad for Jack Lescoulie. Jack was Italian. Good lookin' kid. Well Rocky's got this pan that looks like homeplate after a 16 to 12 ballgame.
But you would have thought Rocky was painting the Mona Lisa. The Rock is wearin' this apron so you know no one is goin' to keep a straight face for long.
"I only use Romaine lettuce. No ice burg lettuce for me. Then I make sure there's no dead spots on thee leaves."
Lescoulie's smiling.
"Now Jack be sure not cut the Romaine ,always pull it apart. It's crisper that way.If you slice it with a knife it's no good."
Lescoulie's startin' to chuckle.
"Next you select the olives. Don't use the canned stuff.Canned stuff is no good. Always fresh. More green than black. Black has a stronger taste. Not too many of the black."
Lescoulie is lookin' around to see if anyone else is enjoying this.
"No onions. Never. I like to slice thinly the big beefsteak tomatos, but remember thin or it's no good."
I think one of the cameramen you could hear laugh.
"Now I use imported dry salami, but it must be sliced thin.A little Cappacola. Not too much or it's no good."
Garroway's laughin'
"Oregano, fresh hand ground. Oil,only imported Italian or it's no good. I like Bertolli, but if you want to use Beria go ahead. I like Bertolli."
Rosemary Clooney is bustn' a side.
"Red wine vinegar and fresh Italian bread and you have the Rock's antipasto."
By now the place is in a riot. Rocky finally comes out of the trance and looks at Lescoulie and says,"What's so funny?"
Lescoulie was fast on his feet.
"I'm not eating that"
The Rock has the puzzled look.
"Why not. It's the best.I made it."
"Yeah, but you didn't wash your hands."
What Rocky Graziano said to Lescoulie in Italian can't be translated on the forum. Nor was it bleeped on the show.(I guess not many understood what he said). But he told Lescoulie to put the antipasto somewhere inside his lower body.
