When The Professor made his successful title defense against fomer champion Calvin Grove of Philadelphia, PA, there was rumours that challenger Gabriel Ruelas of California was supposed to be the mandatory challenger instead of Grove. But, for some reason, the fight did not happened then.

Ruelas, 22, was at ringside for the Nelson-Grove fight and he said that if he were the man fighting that night, he would have knocked Nelson out.

For my estimation, Grove fought gallantly but did not close the show like he should in a tough fight of that magnitude.

It was Ruelas' turn this time around and in front of 130,000 fans at Estadio Azteca, Ruelas (who was also with his brother Rafael born in Mexico) could not capitalized being the crowd in his favor. He fought, but did not fought great. It seemed to me that he was fighting for survival. His talk about knocking out The Professor was CHEAP. Maybe very cheap. You cannot win the title from the champion just by getting by. You gotta throw more punches and overwhelm convincingly. Just like Jeff Fenech did to Nelson in the first fight. Unluckily, Fenech did not get the decision. It was a complete highway robbery.

I scored the Nelson vs Ruelas fight 116-114 in favor of the great Azumah Nelson, who at 34 was still strong like an ox. Ruelas thought he won the fight. I don't know what was he complaining and fussing. He lost that fight. The decision was justified. Do a better job next time, Gabriel!

Quite a coincidence that the decision is always justified when it goes the way of your guy.

Azumah Nelson, the great Professor, finally loses his WBC World Jr Lightweight crown to his nemesis Jesse James Leija by unanimous decisoon.

It was their second fight in a card by American promoter extraordinare Don King billed "The Rematches" on May 7, 1994 at the beautiful MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.

It featured 4 world championship fights rematches in one night:
Gerald McClellan vs Julian Jackson for McClellan's WBC World Middleweight Title.
Azumah Nelson vs Jesse James Leija for Nelson's WBC World Jr Lightweight laurels.
Terry Norris vs Simon Brown for Brown's WBC World Jr Middleweight crown.
And the main event of Julio Cesar Chavez trying to recapture his long time WBC World Jr Welterweight crown from Frankie Randall when he lost to Randall in an upset on January 29th of same year.

It was the first time that Nelson did not win in a return match. Something that he was specialized in. At 35, boxing analists were saying that it was time for The Professor to retire. He had a great career.

It seemed since the first Jeff Fenech fight that Nelson was kindvof slipping. But, we cannot take away credit from Jesse James Leija, the new champion. He fought beautifully with a great plan. In round 2 he caught Nelson flush with a right to the chin. Nelson went down for the first time in 12 years since his fight with the great Salvador Sanchez. But, he got up and kept going. He really got beaten this time. His long reign of almost 6 years and 11 title defenses went to a close.

He vindicated himself to the drugs users as he did with the members of the LGBTQ2IA+ community.

Already being a role model for the latin community, and ALL the music fans in the world (which goes without saying but i'm sayin it anyways) Oscarito helped to shatter prejudice as early as 2007. I sometimes wish he'd done something for the midgets as they are in need of recognition and acceptance too. Oscarito is not Superman. Maybe other fighters could have stepped up to the plate for that.
