Tony went into the Black Mamba fight with an injured hand (Rght), I tried to talk him out of fighting at that time, we knew he was going to need surgery and didn't know how long he was going to be out of the ring, so he said, get me a pain shot (In the hand) and I'll fight this fight and then I'll have the surgery, against my advise he fought and won, then he had the surgery was off for almost a year.
Considering how many times I watched Tony fight live, in the amateurs, it's odd that I only saw one of his pro fights live, and that was against Roger Mayweather. I'm glad that Tony was featured on those network TV cards that were broadcast both nationally.

The Mayweather fight was held at the "Country Club", in the San Fernando Valley. It was a small 1000 seat venue, where even the worst seat in the house had a good view of the action. I remember sitting at a table at ringside, with a bunch of actors. What a pain in the ass they can be.

The all-knowing David Hasselfoff had been impressed with Tony B. and my friend, the late actor Victor French, told Hasselhoff, that I had known Tony from the time he was a kid. Hasselhoff smiled and without hearing what he'd been told, started to tell me all about Tony, how he boxed, and "why" his hook landed 99% of the time, etc. I really got an education on Tony Baltazar from David Hasselhoff, he wasn't interested in hearing the "5 yr. Tony shadow boxing on TV from the Olympic", no, he preferred listening to himself.

Frank, I should have insisted he meet you, as the boy's father/mgr./ trainer, you'd like to hear what Hasselhoff had to say. He might have given you some "tips" on improving Tony's hook. :)

By the way, the fight was good, but it really wasn't close. Tony had his way with Mayweather, from the start he was in control. Mayweather would challenge Tony, but was outclassed. This is how I remember it, but it was a long time ago, mid-80's??

Damn, I forgot all about that until this thread.

And for the record: Listening to actors share their boxing knowledge is about as pleasant as having your balls squeezed in a vice.

Rick,

Tony's fight with Roger Mayweather was not a good fight to watch, and the blame belongs to RM, because he wouldn't stop to fight. in the second round Tony nail him with a left hook and that was the last Tony seen of him, after getting hit by that hook, RM get on his bike and paddle as hard as he could, he was going so fast that I couldn't see him, all I could see was a black flash going by, I was yelling at him to stop and fight, of course he didn't.

Tony's hook was 90% his own, I taught him how to pick his elbow and turn his hand on contact.

Rick-

Tony's fight with Roger Mayweather was not a good fight to watch,

Well, I guess I thought it was David Hasselhoff's fault, he didn't make it anymore enjoyable for me. So, Tony had a bad night, too, huh? :) At least he didn't get robbed. Today, if you run and survive, your considered a "master boxer", and always get the nod.

Frank,
Your son Frankie had a real nice win at The Olympic against a tough Shig Fukuyama.
Fukuyama isnt talked about too much anymore but he was a guy who stopped Danny Lopez a couple years before he fought Frankie.
He also had Sean Ogrady badly busted up before Sean pulled a rabbitt out of his hat.
I was wondering if you can tell us about Frankies fight with Shig.

I'd also like to hear about that one, Frank.

Shig Fugiyama was one of those "bad luck" opponents. He was guy who fought like he had nothing to lose, and he didn't. If it wasn't for Sean O'Grady's father Pat controlling pro boxing in Oklahoma, Sean would have lost on a TKO.

I remember that Danny got something in his eyes in the match with Fugiyama. Something blinded 'Lil Red, and the fight was stopped as he was having difficulty defending himself.

When you think about it, Danny never was big in the defense department, had the fight not been stopped, Fugiyama might have gone the way of others. If Danny Lopez was standing, he could knock anybody out.

pugie,

Shig was one tough guy, but Frankie pretty much had his way with Fukuyama, stopping him in 4rds., in his next fight S.F had O'Grady, like you said all busted up, when the referee, who was Larry Rozadilla from L.A., stopped the fight so the doctor could look at O'Grady's cuts, now what I'm going say next is what Rozadilla told me, he said while the doctor is looking at O'Grady's cuts, old man O'G jump on the ring apron an told Larry that if he stop the fight that he (Larry) was going to get killed, so Larry let fight continue, now when FUkie got cut and Larry call the doctor, again old man O'G jump on the ring apron and told Larry that if he didn't stop the he was going to get kill.

Rick,

Frankie's fight with Fukie was really one sided, Frankie just beat up on him until the ref. stop the fight.

Wow.
Thanks for that info.
Its been awhile since I watched that fight.
I always wondered how Sean was allowed to continue with his face looking the way it was.

I have to say that I don't know if all that is true, when Larry would tell you a story he would get every dramatic and I think he would stretch the truth a bit, but I wouldn't put it pass old man O'G to do something like that.

I remember my Mother , (God rest her soul) who hated boxing, watching this movie and then asking me, "Brian, why do you wanna be a boxer?" you will wind up like this Tully guy".
That movie had an impact on her.
After my first amateur fight, she said she was never comin to another fight again.
I stopped the kid in the first but still she didnt like it.
Of course she was ringside every time after that.
An Irish mom, she had to be there if something happened to her boy.

On Frankie and Fukie's card I also had Tony fighting in an amateur fight, back in those years, the Olympic would start off the show with 3 amateur fight, and Tony and John Montes were the two hottest amateurs in L.A. at the time, so the guy that was matchmaking the amateurs call me and ask me if I would let Tony fight John, I said "sure" then he said, but it has to be at 132 lbs. I said no "problemo", so we made the fight on the under card of Frankie-Fukie, there was a big crowd that nite, not only for Frankie-Fukie, but also for Tony-John, Tony and John's fight was the biggest amateur cross-town rivalry since 1952 when Keeny Teran fought Gil Cadilli.
We were the third fight on the card, we get in the ring, the fighters get introduce, go to the center of the ring for the instruction from the referee, we come back to the corner and I start walking down the steps from the ring, I get down to the floor, turn around to look at the fight and I see John going down, he was out for ten minutes, and with 10oz gloves.

My uncle was at the fights that nite with a bunch of John' fans, he was the only one rooting for Tony of all the bunch, I guess that nite he had the last laugh.

Sorry, the Teran vs Cadilli fight was in the pros, but thats how big Tony vs John was.

Frank . . . This picture of Quarry brings back lots of memories. It was taken in the dressing room area of the Main St. Gym. Most of the early photos of Jerry that you post were taken during the early months ofhis pro career. He is wearing the same pair of Trunks he wore in the '65 GG tournament, when he won the National title.

You're right Rick, those pics. of early Jerry Quarry were shot at the Main St. Gym, you must know more about the Main St. Gym then I, as I would only go there when I had to (I.E, training the boys or had to talk to Howie)

Jerry Quarry

Look at the thickness of the trapezius on Quarry that stand up just from stretching his arms forward, running from the back of his neck straight into his deltoids. That is where a chin comes from.

Notice the NO pectorals--typical of boxers.
Meanwhile the deltoids (the punching muscles) are much bigger than the pectorals.

And the forearms where they connect into the elbow-upper arms, even in that extended position.

Some physical specimen made specifically for boxing.

I remember when Red Tracton managed Bobby, and owned a great restaurant on Ventura Blvd. in Encino. Unfortunatly for Chacon, his knife wasn't sharp enough to cut thru a prime Ruben Olivares, but he sure gave us a lot of great fights. Lots of drama in the life of Bobby Chacon, what a special talent.

This is a link to story I wrote on Bobby, a few years ago:
