I'm not sure they think he's doing a good job as much as they have completely tied their cultural and political identities to him and feel unable to reverse course as it would create too much cognitive dissonance.

That plus a lot of people are probably just unaware of anything that's going on. They either consume news through some social media slop feed or they get no news at all.
