I can’t really think of a heavyweight who looked ultra ropey, and turned in an awful performance only to turn it around a few months later to win a big fight. I think of Riddick Bowe v Golata 2, but losing weight didn’t help that much and he just retired afterwards.

Holyfield looked crap against blown up LHW Bobby Czyz and then went and beat Tyson 6 months later. He was written off after losing to Moorer where he retired and came back only to be stopped by Bowe.

That’s true. He seemed to get over his mystery heart condition to come good. And later gave Lewis two hard fights.

Recent example, is Fury looks like crap right before a big win routinely.
Ali was going through a spell and wasn't favored to win the Foreman fight.

Yeah miraculous turnaround. His career looked over after the Moorer fight, so much so he retired. I remember journalists were fearing for his safety for fighting Tyson, especially after the lacklustre performance against Czyz.

Holyfield didn’t look so bad versus Mercer

With hindsight Holyfield didn't look particularly bad against Czyz, he was just coasting through a fight where he had absolutely nothing to fear. The real issue was that Holyfield had looked SO bad previously against Bowe that nothing less than a return to top form against Czyz would allay the concerns surrounding a subsequent challenge to Mike Tyson.

Again with hindsight, it was obvious that Holyfield wasn't right for the Bowe rubber match, but the previous heart defect rumours and the amount of wars (not least 15 effing rounds at cruiserweight) he'd taken part in, had most people bricking it on his behalf.

I would like to know what exactly was going on, it was long suspected that Holyfield had been heavily using PEDs and had some sort of health issues relating to that, he was clearly on the gear, his physical transformation from cruiserweight was not something you could achieve naturally.

He looked like he was about to drop dead in the Bowe fight, had Bowe out on his feet, and then simply couldn't move or throw a shot, one solid shot, and Bowe would have been totally done at that point. What a trilogy that was, kind of had everything.

Well, Andy Ayling used to post on here many, many years ago, I remember. Not sure if he still does. I guess Team 'Allegedly' like it here, where they can get some honest feedback, at the very least.

Holyfield only really looked himself in that Bowe fight for the first couple of rounds, he was gasping for breath as early as the 4th. Regardless of whether the real cause was flu, hepatitis A, food poisoning or whatever, when coupled with the preceding heart rumours it was very hard to observe this ridiculously chiselled, 33 year old warrior falling apart before our eyes, without concluding that he was washed up, damaged goods.

It all served to (unintentionally) con the fook out of Mike Tyson. By the time they met in the ring the following year, one guy was coming for a fight, the other for a knockout.

On a side note, the guy who crashed Evander’s post-Czyz interview to tell him he loved him, I wonder what his emotional state was a few months later, the night his hero went and did the unthinkable.
