Mercer hasn't been a Top 10 Heavyweight for over 10 Years now, his last good performance was way Back in 1996 against Lennox Lewis and his last SIGNIFICANT WIN was waaaaaaaaaay back in 1991 against Tommy Morrison which is 18 years AGO!

Also RAY MERCER was never a WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION.....Holy eff the WBO belt meant DIDDLY FUKIN SQUAT back in 1991 plus he never had anything more than Medium to Good Heavyweight Power and was never a Killer with his Fists in terms of 1 punch Power!

Now on to TIM SYLVIA..... This Guy aint no BUM according to UFC. He is only the 2nd Man in UFC History to win back the UFC Heavyweight Belt and according to MMA fans, UFC is the best of the best plus he was last CHAMPION in 2007 so is still close to his BEST!

Now can u imagine what REAL KILLERS in Heavyweight Boxing would do with 4oz Gloves....I'm talkin about those Heavyweights who can't Hack it anymore at the Top Level in Boxing like OLIVER McCall, HASIM RAHMAN, DAVID TUA and SHANNON BRIGGS.......FUKIN HELL......There would be DE-FUCKIN-CAPITATIONS if one of them HIT a MMA fighter FLUSH which lets face wouldnt be that Hard to do!
for christ's sakes haven't you ready anything on here.

There were NO TAKEDOWNS ALLOWED in the match between Sylvia and Mercer - it was strikes only. Sylvia was also well overweight.

No matter how big a puncher a boxer is, he's going to get absolutely marmalised once it goes to the ground and they have no game.

Oh and Randy Couture won the heavyweight belt TWICE, in fact, he beat Sylvia to do it. He also has won titles FIVE TIMES.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Andrei Arlovski makes his pro boxing debut.

He is a former ufc champion and is good at striking.

I love AA, great offensive fighter and provided us with some great fights in his career... great bloke as well.

Unfortunately, he bought his chin from the same shop as Amir Khan, and it just won't cut it in boxing :(

Oh and stop with the 'if a MMA fighter took a Boxer to the Ground' BS, easier said than done! Taking a Boxer like Hasim Rahman to the Ground with his natural strength isnt so easy especially if they were given a few months training in groundwork and got to understand the techniques and the angles an MMA fighter will come at them from. Also am i missing something but dont MMA Fights actually start STANDING!

I must admit it is hilarious trying to compare MMA to Boxing, they're two completely different sports, the only thing they have in common is that they are combat sports. It's like comparing Formula 1 to NASCAR for fuck sake, both are motorsports but there's never been a champion who's won both and there never will be, same goes for MMA and Boxing.

You don't know jack mate. I'm not an MMA apologist mate, I was a boxing journalist for several years, so don't try that shite with me. I've been a boxing fan since I was 5 and I'm 38 now.

Hasim Rahman is a fat tub of lard, he'd be on his arse in seconds.

It may have escaped your notice that a lot of MMA guys are just as big if not bigger than Rahman, and they've been wrestling and doing martials arts that involve groundwork since they were young kids, you cannot learn that stuff in a few months.

You're an ignoramus. I'm done arguing with you.

Oh, actually one more thing. Any MMA proponent in a stand up boxing match with no kicks or takedowns allowed, would get absolutely battered. They just wouldn't have the defence or striking ability. Put BJ Penn in with Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match and Mayweather would rip him to shreds in about 30 seconds.

They are different sports which require different skills, end of.

OMG so what if you were a Boxing journalist! You replyed to my Post with ridiculous arguments that Slyvia was out of Shape and wasnt allowed No Take Downs!

Look at this PROMO for the fight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juNpWkQ0-_8

MERCER is a very very old 48 and still KTFO a guy who was UNDISPUTED UFC HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION in 2007!

Also you have absolutely NO PROOF that HASIM RAHMAN would be on his ASS in seconds so stop Talkin BOLLOCKS Mate! Oh and i doubt there are many Bigger MMA Guys than Rahman without the use of STERIODS! Lets see a MMA Fighter Drug Tested every day for a year for every conceivable body growth stimulant and than Fight Rahman! Can you imagine Brock Lesnar Without STERIODS and Body Growth Hormones? That Fuker would have the Body of Ian Beale!

Oh and stop going on about that Bloody Ground Game again

A lot of invective here, on the odd occasion backed by logic. I'm from the McDonnell camp on this one, old school boxing fan, watches MMA, unlike James, can't particularly get into it (i find the grappling/take downs a bit boring), but a few observations based on being at both types of fighting ringside and going to a shared gym:

If you think the best boxer could beat the best MMA fighter around his weight at MMA, you are a moron - and of course, the inverse is true. The New York gym I went to (I was just doing white collar sparring, but its a great fight gym), that had very good fighters of both disciplines, re-enforced this (incidentally said fighters had no problem with this), I saw world Top 30 welterweights showing a decent UFC fighter how they shift their bodyweight as they punch, and indeed saw them spar with the 14 oz gloves on where the boxer beat the UFC guy to the punch every time,

I saw the roles reversed and the UFC guy, if he slips the punch which means the boxer is overly committted be tripped up and taken to ground. The point someone made about a boxer rushing a UFC guy to KO him is inviduous - any decent UFC fighter would take him down early, of course it would work in many occasions - its like saying PacMan rushed Hatton - yep, he did, but doesn't mean he could rush Mayweather.

Anyway, I'm bored with this debate.

anyway, whatever

it just seems to be that overmuscled american college wrestler types seem to be taking over martial arts, calling themselves "all round" fighters when in fact their striking seems quite poor. if they are cross trained, then why can't a top MMA fighter fight with punches only? surely this may point to some lack in the stand up fighting of top MMA practitioners.

where are the thai boxers, strikers that would have a better chance of competing because they use not only kicks and punches, but knees and elbows, and know how to fight in clinches? why aren't ppl "crossing over" thai boxing and BJJ? - two of the more practical fighting styles.

MMA is constantly evolving, it was shootfighters who dominated early on, then Brazilian Jiui Jitsu, then it was strikers, then wrestlers who dominated.

Well guess what, Lyoto Machida just proved that Karate is now a viable base for MMA and so the wheel keeps turning.

I find MMA fascinating, the more I watch it, the more I appreciate the incredible skills of the sport and it's nuances.

i am sure someone can answer this more fully, but:

basically the quick answer is, 'they are'. doing BJJ and Muay Thai, that is.

EG Chute-Boxe (premier brazilian muay Thai team in MMA) cross-train in BJJ, both Shogun and Wanderlei had high-ish belts and some ability in BJJ

similarly Brazilian Top Team (ditto above only they are BJJ) cross-train in muay thai to a high degree, EG when baby Noguiera fought the above-mentioned Shogun, he actually out-Muay Thai'd him by landing more knees in the clinch.

re american wreslers, i think thats overstating the case, top fighters like anderson silva and GSp are most assuredly NOT american musclemen types.

All of the proponents know some of the various martial arts. Wrestling is itself a mixed martial art, given that there is throws, ground game and locks involved, this makes wrestling a very viable base to which to add strking, kicks, and some brazlian jiu-jitsu.

i mean, Shotokan and endless hours doing kata and standing in horse stance?

or Kyokushin or something more obviously combat-oriented? or 'sports karate' like Wado Ryu?

Yes, but he uses Karate extensively in his fights - and he stated himself that he is trying to prove that Karate is a viable martial art as a base.
