Watching the build up to this the Barrera win does stick in my throat a bit, cause they bang on about how it's propelled him into World Level, despite Barrera being too small and too old, and that's without considering the fact he couldn't see and Khan still failed to hurt him. Weird. They even talk like Khan stopped him, when in truth an accidental cut stopped him. Khan couldn't even bang Barrera out blinded!
Anyway, rant over, the point is that if Limond and Gomez could wobble Khan he's clearly not the prospect he's being made out to be, he's just the only real cash cow around
i wont be watching im watching the ITV4 one of clev vs macintosh

Yep, I wish Beibut Shumenov would clean up in Kazakhstan instead of fighting these world-ranked names he's fond of beating up on.
Puh-lease. For the most part boxers are remembered for their highest achievements rather than their way up the rankings anyway. If Khan goes on to have a successful world-level campaign, nobody's going to look back in 10 years and say "but he didn't fight Thaxton" any more than people are now complaining that Naz didn't fight Duke Mckenzie.WildWaylon wrote:Truth is, its not who you beat to get to the top, its who you avoid in getting there.
For the purposes of his career, can't you see that matching Khan with Barrera is, was, and always will have been, a much better move than matching him with Murray or Thaxton?

However he nearly came unstuck twice though, against Limond and Gomez.
"nearly" isnt the same as "did"
"nearly" is what makes boxing worth watching
What is it with the Scrooge McDucks on here?

Why not? (Theoretically speaking, if you take the champs out of the equation.)sg1985 wrote:but you have to realise all the alphabet titles can't have the same top ten fighters dont you?
OK, I'll tell you why. Because they are entirely self-serving, money making organisations whose continued existence and profligation poisons the sport.

Boxerbob is right and he articulates his case well in the opening post. There is no way on earth that this lad - nice as he is - deserves any kind of 'world' title shot. Promoters are bound to feel sick about 'forum fans' seeing as most of us will say when we don't like something.sweetscience wrote:this thread is a fine example of why people in the trade (boxers/managers/promoters) feel sick when they think about 'forum fans'

It's a strange one and I can't remember anything else like it.
By the way, nothing wrong with this fight at all (other than Khan getting the shot in the first place).

Good post. That sums up how I feel. Can you imagine if they came up with the 'Super six' thing for lightweights and invited Khan? How would Warren explain wriggling out of that one?Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:Boxerbob is right and he articulates his case well in the opening post. If Khan wins on saturday, then good luck to him, what i hate is his team will be ramming it down our throats telling us that he is the next sugar ray,i still see this fight as the easy option for khan to pick up a 'world title' and won't ever believe he has improved until he gets whacked on the chin and stays on his feet.Kotelnik might not be the one to test him and i doubt we will find out for a while yet as his team will duck and dive away from any punchers. Can you imagine, lennox lewis, nigel benn or even eubank avoiding a fight because the opponent could punch,no i thought notboxerbob wrote:look i will not be buying this ppv crap on saturday night...why??
amir khan is a fraud , total hype
*he hasnt beaten anyone in the top 15-20
*his whole career has been made to avoid anyone with a punch - except prescott
*his whole career has been made to fight guys much physically smaller than him - except prescott
*before that famous minute vs prescott , the deluded one thought that he deserved to fight pacquaio
*ricky hatton was his best friend and he didnt want to fight him , why the change after the hatton/pacquaio fight???
*why no rematch with prescott??? , why no thaxton fight???
*why is khan already talking about ditching the WBA title if he wins it?? - see his next mandatory fight = a guy with a punch
im sorry but allegedly know amir has no chin at all , thats the reason he has been fighting much smaller and older guys
to top it off khan is fighting for the WBA title , who exactly is the real champion?? , how many fake champions do the WBA make for each weight??
ive always said that khan was no better than audley harrison , at least audley wanted to fight the best in the uk and guys with a punch.
amir khan has fought 1 guy in the top 20...he lasted 60 secs.........facts do not lie
Re: amir khan makes me sick
i think this fight will tell us about amir khan. ok, kotelnik is one of the weaker title holders ( a fact evidently not lost on mister khan him self, judging by recent foot in mouth comments ), and amir did bugger all to warrant the shot, but taking the fight at face value, khan v kotelnik is a fair step up for the lad and a risk, albeit a calculated one. this is a fighter who operates at a level khan has not yet found himself at, is a genuine junior welter, and has at least kept pace with some good boxers. forget the before and after, this is an interesting matchup that sees both fighters pretty evenly backedbigjack wrote:If Khan wins on saturday, then good luck to him, what i hate is his team will be ramming it down our throats telling us that he is the next sugar ray,i still see this fight as the easy option for khan to pick up a 'world title' and won't ever believe he has improved until he gets whacked on the chin and stays on his feet.Kotelnik might not be the one to test him and i doubt we will find out for a while yet as his team will duck and dive away from any punchers. Can you imagine, lennox lewis, nigel benn or even eubank avoiding a fight because the opponent could punch,no i thought notboxerbob wrote:look i will not be buying this ppv crap on saturday night...why??

To be fair to Khan, Kotelnik is a paper champ anyway, I mean, come on, who did he beat to win his title? Gavin Rees, hardly a world class operator himself.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:Hang on. This isn't really a world title fight, neither man can even come close to claiming to be the best 140 pound fighter in the world, so we shouldn't get too hung up on it.
Re: amir khan makes me sick
But Jim, when we hear for the millionth time that Khan is close to becoming 'world champion' (Joe Bloggs therefore understandably assuming he will be the best in the world), seeing as you're entirely correct in your observations about the fight and its actual value...isn't that exactly why we SHOULD be p*ssed off about the whole charade?jamesmcdonnell wrote:

Seems TO ME YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED to dislike Khan but you are allowed to pay to watch him
EEEERRRR Sorry peanuts but Khan, is a profesional boxer, making BIG money ,to me that puts him in a industry called the ENTERTAINMENT industry,,, mmmm,,,, Fair enough ,up till now he has kept us entertained, in his last few fight but that is because we all know he will fail. and we all know in the realistic world he is shite.
You want to back a winner try and get the renatch with the dud from sth america but do not come on a boxing forum and claim he is this that and the other when its obvious he is a manufactured star , one manufactured by the best promoter in Britain, but still manufactured
Basicly when there's a few people around who know the differnce , don't get upset when i tell you stop pissing on my back and telling me its raining

Re: amir khan makes me sick
Kotelnik's a good fighter, a very solid pro, has come off a thrilling win over man-of-the-moment Marcos Maidana, a power puncher. He has as much right to call himself 140-pound champ as anyone else and he's fought some tricky/tough guys such as Witter and M'baye and Abdullaev. He's fought world class names in European title fights, and has gone for the highest profile fights. If he wins this, ppl all over the world will know about him. This is quite an event, a match between 2 Olympic Silver medallists: Kotelnik is the fighter who fights like someone with high level skills honed from his amateur experience.
If he'd lost to Victor Ortiz (whom he was scheduled to fight), I'm sure Ortiz wouldn't have been regarded as a paper champ. Ortiz would have been validated as the next Golden Boy.
By the way, they're still writing articles on Ortiz - the big GBP investment - sneaking him in articles on other fighters. Vic Darchinyan article - they bring in Victor Ortiz. Kotelnik article - they bring in Victor Ortiz. Any excuse - refer to Victor Ortiz. Khan beats Kotelnik - Khan v Ortiz - biggest fight ever ever??

Re: amir khan makes me sick
it's not like Kotelnik is a crap champ. He showed a lot in that close win over Maidana. He has solid defence, knows when to tuck up, when to counter, when to go on the offensive: this is a very good fighter who knows what he's doing.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:But Jim, when we hear for the millionth time that Khan is close to becoming 'world champion' (Joe Bloggs therefore understandably assuming he will be the best in the world), seeing as you're entirely correct in your observations about the fight and its actual value...isn't that exactly why we SHOULD be p*ssed off about the whole charade?jamesmcdonnell wrote:

Yes indeedy Ian, however, Khan is no more at fault than the myriad of other figthers who have gotten a shot at a paper title.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:But Jim, when we hear for the millionth time that Khan is close to becoming 'world champion' (Joe Bloggs therefore understandably assuming he will be the best in the world), seeing as you're entirely correct in your observations about the fight and its actual value...isn't that exactly why we SHOULD be p*ssed off about the whole charade?jamesmcdonnell wrote:

It's a shoddy situation and it does stick in the craw - but it's hardly an unusual situation. Khan gets additional bile because of the build up he has had and the heavily weighed matchmaking leading up to this fight.
Re: amir khan makes me sick
and yet it could be argued that kotelnik is the best and most proven of the 140-pound world title holders - pacquiao notwithstanding. pac probably only fights catchweights now - vs skeletal former welterweights - and it's doubtful he ever defends his "legit" world title
