Limitations??, Did Mitchell go over?..No. Did he get hurt?...Yes. Did he recover and come back to win by ko?...Yes. I think the answers to these questions dont highlight any limitations, it says more about his heart and the power to dig deep when everythings not going his way, the ability to turn a fight around. That fight showed more positive rather than limitations. Carl is European class at best, many may argue not even that high yet he gave Kevin absolute fits in their mini war.Des1 wrote:Limitations??, Did Mitchell go over?..No. Did he get hurt?...Yes. Kevin showed great heart, a solid chin and that he can come through a challenge(in my opinion, none of these were ever a question with Mitchell. He has always been tough and can fight etc)in that fight but for me it showed why he won't cut it against the top level guys.
Zero head movement and get's caught with far too many punches. I don't think he has the power to stop the top guys either.
It's all about opinions of course and not everyone agrees. I hope Mitchell proves me wrong obviously, but I'm not going to be blinded by bias.
Kevin has had plenty of people tip him for great things since he has been a junior but I don't think he will go as far as some expected him to.
Re: Breaking News Kevin Mitchell goes to train with Roach
Firstly, you're acting as if I said that, when I was merely repeating what a previous poster had stated.Des1 wrote:Limitations??, Did Mitchell go over?..No. Did he get hurt?...Yes. Secondly, I also disagree with your statement. For me, the fight highlighted Mitchell's strengths, but also highlighted his limitations, most notably his tendency to get drawn into a war when it was a fight he was comfortably controlling when sticking to his boxing.
Johanson didn't have the ability to trouble 'anyone' (as highlighted by his previous losses), and the fact Kevin went 'life and death' with him tends to support the view that Mitchell is European-level/fringe-world class, and if that is his limit there's no shame in that.
Re: Breaking News Kevin Mitchell goes to train with Roach
imo limitations were there but kevin wanted to give the fans what he felt they wanted to see, kevin at his best is a good technical boxer at which freddie roach will insist he does in future, which is why he is going to train with himDes1 wrote:Limitations??, Did Mitchell go over?..No. Did he get hurt?...Yes. I agree with the majority of people here, Mitchell is a decent fighter with heart but hasnt done a whole lot to deserve a World Title chance.
A few more Eastern Europeans served up for him and then a world title fight - FW tried and tested formula.
Best p4p Britsh fighter? Are you sure mate? I'd place Froch, Khan, Cleverly aswell as quite a few others way ahead of him tbh, but thats just my opinion ofc 8)

This comment illustrates everything that is wrong with boxing - a fighter having an unbeaten record does in no way, shape or form mean that they are superior to a boxer with a loss on his record. The emphasis of fighters maintaining unbeaten records is a farce as has been shown by great examples like Marvin Hagler.handles wrote:mitchell hasnt been beaten yet so how can you rate khan who has been floored, before him ? taking nothing away from khan i like himbengulnaci1 wrote:I agree with the majority of people here, Mitchell is a decent fighter with heart but hasnt done a whole lot to deserve a World Title chance.

The only reason Mitchell is unbeaten is because he has has fought a lower standard of opposition to Khan to date. If he'd stepped up to an equivalent level I'm sure he'd have incurred a loss and that in itself isn't necessarily a bad thing. Depending on the nature of the loss, it can actually be an important part of the learning curve - look at Khan post-Prescott, would anyone seriously argue that he's not a better fighter as a result of that experience?

Great move for Kevin

mitchell has boxed some opponents not on par but has equally boxed top title contenders, has khan NODeserter wrote:This comment illustrates everything that is wrong with boxing - a fighter having an unbeaten record does in no way, shape or form mean that they are superior to a boxer with a loss on his record. Re: kevin mitchell
I don't really understand your sentence as it's not grammatically correct, but Khan has fought and beaten much better opposition than Mitchell. Most notably, Khan outboxed Kotelnik (legitimately a top 10 light welter) over 12 rounds, to the point of schooling him.handles wrote:mitchell has boxed some opponents not on par but has equally boxed top title contenders, has khan NO

Re: Breaking News Kevin Mitchell goes to train with Roach
Handles, I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and say you are probably Vinny Mitchell!
SUpport is one thing, but delusional comments based purely on your bias towards a fighter are another thing entirely mate.
Mitchell has beat no one inside the top 35 worldwide yet and is way off being p4p best british Fighter! Sam Sexton is probably ranked as high as Mitchell p4p right now, let alone the likes of Froch, Haye, Hatton etc...
Kevin is a good fighter and I hope he pushes on from where he is at, but he needs to start fighting a higher class of fighter. I'm sure it will happen over the next 12 months or so. If he somehow manages to land himself a title shot he should thank his Promoter massively as he has yet to beat anyone to suggest he is worthy.

Re: Breaking News Kevin Mitchell goes to train with Roach
Mitchell has only fought no one to deserve a world title shot. When and where is this likely to take place?

What do you mean? 'only fought no one'?leforge wrote:Mitchell has only fought no one to deserve a world title shot. When and where is this likely to take place?
On another note, Mitchell has won the British title, he has won the Commonwealth title, that accounts for what..roughly a third of the world does it? I'd say that makes him eligable to fight for a world title. I've seen worse fight for a world title.

Re: Breaking News Kevin Mitchell goes to train with Roach
It will hurt Mitchell in the long run.
Look at Maccarinelli. He won a strap he didn't deserve to fight for, beat an assortment of past it and grade C fighters en route and what happened when he stepped into a genuine world title fight?
Still, when was the last time an allegedly fighter actually worked his way into a geuine world title shot?

Mitchell is a decent fighter with tons of bottle and seems a good lad to boot, too. But I have to agree with yiddo14 100%.
Re: Breaking News Kevin Mitchell goes to train with Roach
Exactly, when was the last time a fighter actually worked his way into a genuine world title shot?! So why are those coming down hard on him for it? Like I said before, he is British Champion...He is Commonwealth Champion...That is a big portion of the world....He has won the inter title of that organisation which automatically puts him up in the top contenders, not saying its right or wrong but its the rules for everyone and he's down whats asked of him...So you see, Im not saying oh that 100% justifies a shot .... But it is not 100% unjustified that he has a shot, there have been people less worthy, I mean lets be honest..Even Khan gets bombed out by a relative unknown in one round, two fights later he fights for a world title??....If that can happen then Id say Mitchell is just as entitled to a shot.yiddo14 wrote:It will hurt Mitchell in the long run.

Re: Breaking News Kevin Mitchell goes to train with Roach
For what it's worth Des, I didn't think Khan deserved his Title Shot either.
Plenty of fighters earn their title shots(Haye did, Froch did, no surprise these two aren't promoted by allegedly)these days.
Also on todays world scene, the British and Commonwealth titles mean nothing. It's a shame, but it's the truth.

no im not vinny, not biased, just know a good boxer when i see one, so in your opinion johanssen isnt a good boxer, walter estrada was a world title contender, kev arrived in america 3 days before that and still won, so in my unbiased opinion he is well worthy of a title shotyiddo14 wrote:Handles, I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and say you are probably Vinny Mitchell!

Re: Breaking News Kevin Mitchell goes to train with Roach
Deserter, with all due respect your argument here is pointless because although Mitchell faced Estrada four years after his WBO fight againts Harrison and KO'd two fights before he boxed Mitchell, Estrada went the distance losing on points againts Roman Martinez the WBO Champion who KO'd Nicky Cook after Mitchell had boxed him. Mitchell good rid of Estrada by via KO 5, the current WBO Champ Martinez got rid of Estrada via points 10 so if you want to go by results etc to prove your point thats my argument and enough said reallyDeserter wrote:handles wrote: not biased, just know a good boxer when i see one, so in your opinion johanssen isnt a good boxer, walter estrada was a world title contender![]()
Mitchell faced Estrada more than FOUR years after he'd been bombed out in his WBO challenge against Harrison and was clearly way past his best - he'd been KO'ed in 2 by a fighter below world-class just two fights before he faced Mitchell as well.
And you say you're not biased...

Re: Breaking News Kevin Mitchell goes to train with Roach
Des, the British and Commonwealth Titles mean nothing on the World Stage. You and I both know this.
Should Danny Williams get a title shot because he is currently British Champ? Should Cleverly get a title shot because he is currently Commonwealth Champ? Of course not!
In reality, Cook was never a genuine World Champion(Haye, Froch Hatton, Calzaghe). He merely held a version, and it must be said it was the Wrarren Boxing Organisation version at that.
If Mitchell does indeed fight for and win the same belt he will be no more than a strap holder.
He gets a shot because allegedly works his fighters into undeserving shots in this particular organisation. It's happened plenty of times before and will happen plenty of times in the future no doubt.
Mitchell hasn't won an eliminator or beat anyone in the top 10-15 in the world and in my opinion these two need to happen(at least) for anyone to become a genuine challenger for a genuine World Title.
