So was I, but I remember being jolted wide awake and sober when Hatton pushed Mayweather back with that jab in round 1 - looking back though, it looked like a balance thing, but when it happened....

:box:
meh, thats nothing. i recall in the 2nd round of pac-hatton, after hatton had actually landed the odd punch and managed to do a bit of wrestling, i turned to my mates and said 'he's done a bit better this round at least...'

of course you can guess what happened a split second later

I watched it at my mum's with her, and I said pretty much the same - there's a shot Hatton lands that makes Pacquiao think. But then....

I only gave Hatton the 5th, other than that he was pretty much outclassed.

I too think he stunned Manny with a jab, that's why I am pretty certain Cotto can cause Pac Man a lot of problems.

On to Witter, what an odd end to the fight. He definitely wasn't out of it, but if you cant dig deep in a world title fight whats the point in going on?

Exactly!

Witter lost 2 fast hungry younger guys, Hatton would not quit, he would be ktfo!

Hatton would never fight a hungry fighter yet alone a hungry younger one - he didn't in his prime why would he now?

so Mayweather and Pacquaio weren't hungry? What a crock.

I reckon Junior must have made well over half a million out of boxing, 5 euro defences and five world title fights + a host of big domestic scraps, so if he's been smart with his money he may choose to retire and if he does good luck to him, i think people are being a bit harsh on him in this thread. Whether you liked him or not he deserves respect, he would fight ANY one put in front of him, he still gets stick for the Zab fight, but he took that fight at short notice while he was still inexperienced and at that time Zab was being touted as the next Ray Robinson.

Eh, don't be lily-livered, I still support Jerman Taylor, three defeats in his past four fights, two by stoppage, and I will still travel to Germany to watch him. Junior's fanbase has always been hard-core, they need to stay that way if he carries on.

Junior looked aged in there. Despite the injury protest his arms were strong enough to throw the cornerman aside when going over to congratulate his opponent, which was a nice touch BTW.

Should have used the small ring, boxed orthodox with more purpose, drew the guy on, and exploited the gaps, it was all there for him, if his body could do it, it couldn't, and he can retire with pride. British, Comm, and Euro route to the WBC is pretty decent, he was a world title holder, no shame in all of that, given his style, his limited audience appeal, and the way he has been overlooked, I would say he has overachieved, why take on guys for smaller titles and low pay when your body is creaking?

Turn it in Junior, when the dust settles you will have a lot to take pride in. Personally, I could never see him beating Hatton or Tszyu, but there is nothing wrong in being the consensus #2 when there is a linear holder in your division.
The way its panned out is Witter doesn't seem to want to be in there with someone who punches back, if he can outclass his opponent he's a happy chappy, if he doesn't he doesn't have the fire in his heart. consequently he's a back foot fighter with a very slippery defense which is fine, but if you can't throw counter shots, throw straight punches you can't compete at this level. I reckon Bradley and Alexander will prove to be very good in the future, at least Bradley who's already beat 3 world champs

He was in that fight and I thought it looked pretty level and he just outright quit, not only that he said 'this fight is everything to me, my future, etc etc'. Whats the point in supporting him if he cant bite down on his gum shield for the most important fight of his life? I dont care if he had a dodgy elbow, fighters fight with torn rotator cuffs, Jesus Chavez did against Morales, Mayweather did against Castillo, Golota did and so on

Junior has achieved a fair bit in the sport, things to be proud of but Saturday night was just WEAK, no other word for it.

Now Taylor might just do it at the top level again if he isnt mentally done, he should be outboxing Arthur and could well beat Frochy. I reckon he deserved the nod over Pavlik in the rematch too. He has his fair share of weaknesses but when he has lost at least he's gone out on his shield. Not sure he has that much left in the tank but we'll see

Half a million over ten years is not a fortune by any stretch. 50 grand a year is not enough to even buy a house with these days on your own.

Half a million in one go is a big payday, 50 grand a year, is a decent wage, but not for a professional fighter with British, European and World Honours.

Big paydays don't always come.

Witter is probably pretty skint, and deffo would have to work on after he retired.

Anyways, back to Quitter or Bullshitter, whichever one fits best. Imagine a fight with McCloskey - it would be horrible. Two guys pot-shoting all night. If he were to carry on, then he should forget Khan, and needs to see if he can get M'Baye for the European belt, assuming he wins. That will get him into the WBC top ten (or does it not?), and he can perhaps see if anyone would give him a shot. Losing in that manner to a 22-year-old prospect isn't good. I think he's done at world level now.

But if I were him, I would retire. You don't quit in a world-title fight.

Yeah, that Roberto Duran was one heartless twat.

And NO I'm not comparing the two. Just exposing your argument a little.

Plenty of fighters have got out of there rather than be badly exposed. Then again, most I know have had the dignity to pack it in AFTER they've tried their best. I'm not saying Witter didn't. Hunter against Molitor was one who comes to mind though.

'No Mas' is arguablly what Duran is best known for, and he is conensus top50 all time great boxer and a lot higher up if you talking about his best weight

Shame but I guess for the bravest sport in the world to show perceived act of cowardice leaves an indelible mark on your career

Witter's name doesnt help either

It's a bit of a surprise that none has mention Nigel Benn- who ended his career in a similar way. Ended his fight against Steve Collins with an ankle injury, then quit on his stool half way through the rematch.

Good post Terry. Is there such a thing as a 'witter fan' I thought they were mainly just Hatton haters.

Witter is so frustrating to watch, but he was given opportunities and unfortunately failed to make the best of them.

Although Hatton lost to the top two P4P's at the time, he lost to them very convincingly, and struggled with fighters on par with Bradley and Alexander (Lazcano, Maussa,Collazo) suggesting that the gap between Hatton and Junior is that far apart.

[quote="Terry D So losing to Bradley and Devon carries more weight than losing to Floyd and Manny, on the basis that the the guys are younger?! [/quote]

Diddly Diddly, I did not read all of your post as I am at work, but I am not making excuses for Witter.

He should have beaten these guys hands down, but people are always saying Hatton lost to Manny Pac and PBF – the 2 best in the world.

I would rather be known for WINNING than losing!

How many other Pacman and PBF foes go around saying I lost to ‘him’ and view it as a positive? Getting knocked out is not a positive in my book.

Witter has had risky low reward fights, and at 35 he may well be done, he would be better served fighting people nearer his own age, you do not see any other top 10 division veteran ( apart from Hopkins – who is rare) taking on these youngsters coming up as unknown, Campbell does not count as we all know about Bradley now. Not an excuse merely an observation.

Still not seen the fight - but if Witter did quit then he should get the correct amount of stick.

As someone said – Hatton was a 40-0 con job and how he conned up, didging ll thr top biys and feasting on mediocre fighters until the money fights cam ehtne getting smashed to bits.

Witter’s career has been crap in terms of fights had and money made, but he still won all the belts over here, and his career reads

WBC World Champion
European Champion
Commonwealth Champion
British Champion

He should have fought more and made more money - .

For those thinking I am overlooking Witter’s performances of late….I am not!

He should have won the Bradley fight and the Alexander fight. For what it is worth I think Bradley and Alexander knock Hatton out, but Hatton’s career of late has always been about money and they do not bring enough for him to get knocked out for – he would happily get trounced by PBF for another $10M and who can blame him.

Hatton could have fought anyone he chose to, Judah – Cotto – Mosley – Margarito – Torres – Hopkins – Witter! – Bradley ANYONE - but he chose Maussa – Collazo – Urango and lazcano u tilthe big money and getting knocked to shite.

Witter may be finished and I only hope he lands the Khan fight and makes some money so that he does not have to work after his career finishes.

Boxing is a cruel sport – maybe the Man of the people ‘Hatton’ will ‘give’ Witter the pay day.

Subnormal areas, crikey Stainforth can get a bit iffy but I wouldn't have said he was some sort of Nuclear fall out type Armageddon full of wandering mutants.
