Taking a prospect who'd just been blown away in one round and guiding him to a world title less than a year after is masterful promotion judged in a business context.
Doesn't mean you have to like it as a fan, but commercially it was very shrewd match-making on Warren's part.
'Guiding'? You act like Khan and Warren spent years carefully picking their way through the treacherous WBA's top 10.

All Warren did was set Khan up with a shot-to-bits Barrera, who clearly needed the money.

Then he grabbed hold of Kotelnik, a weak champion with a familiarity to the UK and Warren.

It was easy. Nothing masterful about that, I'm afraid. If anything was masterful, it was Khan's performances in those fights, given that he'd been sparked out by Prescott and clearly posessess a weak chin. Warren just did the obvious.

However, I was simply asking if James thinks all of Margarito's fights are tainted, or just the Cotto one (because of the manner of that performance).
Well I appologies if its not clearly put, your quoting my question all the time and it includes "Why is all his wins tainted then?"

I was asking why did James single out the Cotto fight and not all of his fights.

Maybe I should have bolded the second question to make it clear thats what I wanted him to respond about. Although I thought having the answer to the first question in my post that your quoting "because of what he did in the Mosley fight" was very clear that I wanted James to expand on the later point.

Appologies again if the way I word my postings annoys you so much.

A disagree that Barrera needed the money, there has been no indication of that. Barerra had a dream of becoming Mexico's first four weight world champion. He still my get it, he's still ranked high with the WBO at Lightweight.

The rest I generally agree with, except maybe that Kotelnik was a weak champion. He was okay, nothing spectacular - but then I don't think many of the champions at 140 aree spectacular.

Of course. Silly me. I'd forgotten how easy this promoting game was and therefore why there are so many successful exponents of it from these shores...
And that's without getting into the joys of historical revisionism - go back on these boards and search for the predictions prior to both those fights. Amazingly enough there were more than a few backing both Barrera and Kotelnik...

how come the Khans had anything to do with options and contractual issues with prescott in the first fight?

I'd like to see Bredis built up by Frank in the UK. A couple fo good fights here for him, Murray, Alex Arthur even Junior Witter and the light welter mob if thats where he's going to be.

Wales,

As always good points. I do agree with large parts of what you are saying. Maybe its because of the depth in the Lightweight devision at the time that Khan had the criticisms. I feel, had he not fought Earl and beat Murray and Thaxton then there would have been an equal share of criticisms. Earl might have been shot, but he was still considered the domestic number #1 at the time - no-one criticised the match up at the time and the clammour for it was as strong as it was for Thaxton at the time.

Kristjansen did get criticisms - something I didn't agree with cause of the level he had boxed at. Sure he was not a puncher, but he was a good solid boxer who had mixed with the best in Europe. Sure it was shrewed matchmaking to find a highly ranked, geniunally EBU title class, opponent tailor made for Khan.... but lets see if Clev can mix it at European level before hailing him as something else. Shall we criticise Brook vs Jennings cause Michael isn't that big a puncher?

Clevs doing well, and its looking like he is going via the traditional route and that needs to be applauded. BUT, he hasn't actually won a single title from a champion (Vacant Commonwealth, Vacant British title). He became the #1 in the devision by default - retirement of Woods, the moving up of Francis and his best win was against an ill prepared Oakey.

Really Clev's best wins are against an ill prepared Oakey, McIntosh and Fry. Good, but hardly earth shattering.

As you said, their resumes are comparable.... age, fights etc - I just think Khan is a level up.

I know Khan had more options, cause there were more quality fighters domestically.

Warren has a lot of influence with governing bodies, (like many other experienced promoter I hasten to add), and has good relations with foreign matchmakers and promoters. He's able to negotiate fights for his fighters on favourable terms, which I don't think any other promoter in the UK can match.

That's why the likes of Khan sign with him.

However, when it comes to the biggest fights, which cannot be staged on home soil, then Warren can I think be perceived as a hindrance to fighters who have already made a lot of money, and are genuine stars in their own rights.

Warren has said in past interviews that he likes to keep things close to home - it's a lot easier to manage the promotion. If you want to fight stateside, then its easier to negotiate with a promoter based in the US.

stujones wrote:Wales,

Well there is alot of strength in the Lightweight - Welter devisions, but not that much depth.

There also seems to be 3 sort of levels of world class now also.

We have "super elite" - Mayweather, Pacquiao, Mosley, Williams and possibly Margarito and Berto.

Then we have an "elite" band - which are probably too faded or not good enough to beat the Super Elite but can command good purses and would give the Super elite good fights. This is where I would place the the likes of Hatton, Marquez, Diaz, Casamayor, Clottey, and Bradley.

Then we have the world class bands - solid world title challengers and champions - not yet in the elite bracket. Here I would place Khan now, and I would still have both Kotelnik and Prescott in this category. Urango would be here, as would Bailey, Ngoudjo, Malignaggi etc.

Now the Super Elite would wipe the floor with Khan. However, I don't think anyone could say with 100% confidence that the elite band would beat Khan. Sure, some would start as favourite, but Khan would have a good chance against them.

I didn't mean to say that the Kotelnik win pushed Khan into an elite bracket, but it did show he was a world class operator, beating a solid champion, who beat one of the fighters you mentioned that could face Khan. We still don't know enough about Prescott to know if he was a one punch wonder or not. He looked distinctingly average last time out, and if that is all Prescott is, then Khan should beat him next time.

If you did a world ranking from Lightweight/Welterweight.... kind of a p4p for those devisions. Hatton would probably still be in the top 6 or 7. Everytime I've brought up Khan vs Hatton a big chorus of response is "we don't want to see Hatton lose to Khan". Personally, I still think Hatton beats Khan - but it is no forgone conclusion and Hatton is still one of the finest fighters in these devisions.

You don't beat Kotelnik convincingly if you are not good.
Stu,

Its

1) Elite
2) World Class
3) Fringe World class.
4) European
5) Commonwealth
6) Domestic
7) Maaarfewwwww Hatton.

Ricky Hatton doid ot gie Mayweather or Pacman good fights, he landed in single figures in both fights combined.

I think Margo is now in the 'elite Bruce Banner after he Hulks out but before he goes supernova' class, along with Arturo Gatti, who was above that class before he died and entered a lower class when he passed on, well, his reflexes aren't what they once were.

overhand_right,

It's all too easy to pull apart a boxer's record. Khan is beyond British level right now. Kotelnik was a legitimate title holder, having not been beaten in the 4 years prior to the defeat to Khan and beating unbeaten, hard punching Maidana (who recently beat highly regarded prospect, Victor Ortiz).
