Well, I don't think you can prove it until you're in there, can you? Other than that, it's all potential.

As for you Geordie c*nts...your first goal was a blatant foul and then one of your defenders made Gordon Banks' 1970 save from Pele looked shite! Even Alan 'I'm not the Messiah, I'm a very sh*t manager' Shearer admitted as much!

I haven't seen any of Smith's early fights, so maybe he looked amazing back then, but he hasn't looked amazing in any recent fights I've seen. Just a very good domestic boxer. There's nothing wrong with that. He can have some good fights with the British title. He's probably the best until one of the new prospects (DeGale, Groves) fights for it.

Agree with Ian on this one.... although I have been dissapointed with him of late. He seemed to be considered very highly by those involved in the contender show.

He also beat Banks (twice) who, in turn, beat Elvin Aylia (twice) - Aylia who gave Abraham a good fight in a world title challenge. Banks would be very much considered "european" class if he was European.

I just hope Smith is one of those who rises to challenge. He isn't putting it together of late, and is making me begin to doubt if the Banks' performances were a true indicator of his talent. If he can find his Banks form again then he is very much European class.

Smigga as i understand it never had the return with banks due to an injury.
But i think you are right to point out that he (banks) was a quality fighter, and i think Paul was a clear winner in the fight, and almost took him out in the 4th, although as paul pointed out, he wasn't at his best that night.
Paul now has a great chance to cement his position as the uk's #1 smw, by beating dodson (which i think he will), and win the lonsadale outright.
I do hope though that he gets his chance to fight stieglitz, as this is the kind of fight that will define him, and put beyond any doubt the talent he has by performing against a top quality operator.
I think it is harsh to say he has been poor of late, maybe not as good as he can perform, but the way he has re-built and bounced back from that ridiculous decision against bendall shows his character and quality.
The problem with the boxing world is if there ain't no KO it's a problem. Well that is bullshit. If it comes, it comes. I think sometimes because of the power paul knows he carries, he has felt some kids should have been out of there before the final bell.
He knows a win is a win, and i think if he continues to adopt this attitude, he will prosper in a competitive division.
I must just sign off by pointing out his class attitude. Some of the comments he has posted on this thread have been top drawer, and show the man for what he is. Class. Liverpool knows it, and soon the uk and the world will!
can't wait for march Paul, will be in the echo for it! :box:

Please tell me the opponents/fights where Smigga has proved beyond reasonable doubt that his world class??

Being the British champion is fantastic, getting the European belt would be even better but to step up to the plate and capture a world title is one massive step and a boxer has to prove his worth which is why I am asking you in which fight Smigga has remotely proved his world class credentials?

He more than held his own, and stopped jonathan reid in the contednder uk v usa series, a guy that had more than double the fights smigga had had at that time. Beat david banks in the contender series
He beat the holder of the british smw title, quigley.
Paul has never ducked anyone, and can only fight who he is put in against, but many of the fighters he has fought are not the bums they are made out to be.
He stopped Renda, a decent domestic operator. Actually, i am not going to list the fights, and opponents.
Paul is yet to prove himself at world level, and european, as he has not fought at that level yet, but my opinion is that he can mix it at that level.
I would say in an ideal world, i would like to see paul fight to win the lonsdale outright, and challenge for the european, and then world. But i am talking about an ideal world, and we dont live in one, so if opportunity knocked and paul had the chance to fight stieglitz, then yeah, i would back him.

My point is and you simply do not see it - I am openly stating I think smigga is a good fighter - but to claim he is remotely world class is barking mad especially when he hasnt even proved his european credentials.

Banks would be very much considered "european" class if he was European.

But he hasn't proven himself consistently at this level and not stepped up to world class - but Banks is a quality opperator.

Smith should have been at British level a fews years back, a good win against Dodson then move up to Euro level hopefully against Magee!

Thats a good call - Magee v Smith would be a very good fight for both of them to take!!

My issue with Smith is tht he is a lovely boxer with skills to burn! I just sometimes think he isn't as mobile enough to carry out that as a gameplan, he just isn't elusive enough.

Look at the Quigley fight...I personally has Quigley winning but it was so scrappy I am not calling for an investigation, it was pretty close, well done Smigga! Sadly for paul, when he was under attack he couldn't control the bout, Quigley would get inside and work him. Funnily enough he won the rounds at the end when Tony was tired with grit and determination. At no point did he outbox his opponent with superior skills.

Now when Dodson gets in he will be throwing hard shots. Dodson may have lost to Quigley but he was doing a better job than Smigga. Sadly it means nothing when you are getting stopped in the 12th but it does show that Dodson will be bringing a lot of fire into the ring. There are serious questions as to whether Smigga will be able to cope with this.

On the flipside there will be serious questions about what Dodson has left, that Quigley fight was hard. If Dodson has dropped, then Smigga could have an easier night than I suspect.

It will be a great fight A real crossroads bout for them both. Far too close to call.

smith and dodson have sparred before so maybe that's why smith is so confident, in the Quigley fight every time dodson hit Quigley dodson would smuther his own work I think he will come out swinging seens how this is his last shot and smith to pick him off drop him a couple of times and stop him in the 7th

He hasn't proved his world class credenitals as a pro, that is a fact anyone can see from reading his record yet you keep banging on asking the same question when you know the answer. As someone said before it's all "potential" talk at the moment which can't actually be proven. I myself, as a big supporter of Paul Smith and having been to alot of his fights don't think he can reach world title level. I'd love him to but I think European title level will be more realistic but that's just my opinion of what he "potentially" can do.

I think Paul will improve the better opponents he faces. I think he should been pushed to British level after contender!

And my point is surely to use the words "potentially" there has to be some form line or fight which entices you to think a european title shot is a realistic possibility and for people to bark on about World is truly astounding.

Look at the evidence to see if you can remotely argue the words "potential or potentially"

People first of all have to realise Paul Smith made his professional debut a full 6 1/2 years ago and people are still on about potential concerning British titles - if Smith was remotely as good as some people potentially think he is - Ummmm - long time to wait for that potential to come to the fore.

People bang on about the David Banks fight as being a good one - really - just trawl boxrec to see what Banks has done since - he lost against Smith and as soon as he went in with someone remotely world class - Edison Miranda - he got sparked in 3 rounds - so in reality how good was that victory.

Then there was what looked like a good win against Jonathan Reid - again just look at what Reid has done since then for it to tell you how good that victory was.

It could be argued Smith's actual best victory was against Rashid Matumla or something like that for a WBA strap.

We then move onto the Quigley fight - some would say a tadge controversial!!! - a rematch for me is simply a must.

As for "potential" - people put Smigga in the same bracket as - Kel Brook, "The Olympians", Barker, Jefferies, etc etc etc - dont be so silly!!! - keep things real - Smigga has done extremely well in capturing the British Title it is avery good achievement - but I will repeat - keep things real ffs.

ffs psud, give it a rest!

Maybe i was premature in saying world class right now, but he will be.

As for his previous opponents, he fornicating beat them, and Was a clear winner imho.

But it's all about opinions, and you are entitled to yours.

Banks and reid were legitimate opponents at the time, regardless of what they have done since.

Smith has flattered to deceive throughout his career, even in capturing the British title against Quigley which could have gone either way. Even though Steve Bendall was fortunate to get the nod over Smith he was still previously dominated and stopped by both Darren Barker and Wayne Elcock which I think provides further evidence of Smith's true level. There's nothing wrong with that but I think many suspected he was capable of going beyond British level when he initially turned over.

Kenny anderson fights paul david on 18th jan, in a elimantor for this title so does the winner of that get the winner of dodson and smith?

or does it not work like that?

I think that is the way it is going to go yes.

I have a sneaky suspicion that David will oupoint anderson to be honest

Hi gents,

I think he's been wasted these last couple of years, although at least he got the "surprise defeat" (so many fighters get) out of the way and it seems to have made him knuckle down a realise he has to do more than just turn-up. I'd like to have seen him doing the British title a good year or 2 ago but hey-ho, he's here now:

For the future: I'd follow a traditional route and try to get the Lonsdale title outright before anything else. By end of 2010 he should have made his 3 defences, and maybe even grabbed a Commonwealth or International title. Then this time next year I'd be aiming up towards European level.

Sorry, traditional route for me and I wouldn't even think of a world title fight for a good couple of years yet....

best wishes

"T.M.K"

Kenny in real good shape for this one and has been training hard over xmas and new year, takes kenny a few rounds to work him out then he beats him i feel, kenny and paul will be a good fight as both will trade :TU:

got to make spud right on his assumptions, i think even smith would agree he aint shown he's world class. ive seen fighters better like richard williams not achievev as much.
