Personally I cannot black Macklin for taking this oppertunity at all, he is signing up for a multi fight deal with one of the worlds top promoters and getting a chance to make a name for himself. Macklin has been attempting to get a title shot for many years now and staying and fighting on a fight by fight deal with FW who really doesn't care too much about him then why is everyone getting on his back.
I too would like to see Barker V Macklin, but it isn't happening just now so maybe for a world title at a later date. Lets just get behind them both and stopp being haters all of a sudden.
Well said. At the end of the day boxing is Macklin's career! It's a better offer!! If you guys were in Macklin's shoes who would you be fighting? It is what it is..we should be supporting our british boxers not slagging thm off as soon as an oppotunity comes along!

Rhook, it's not as if Macklin is struggling to pay his mortgage off. I would've thought he would've wanted Barker badly, as they're been spouting about each other for what seems years. He wanted Barker when Barker was the man, but now it's Mackin with the momentum he seems to have forgotton that one time he was no one.

Hoiw do you know? are you really an expert on Macklin's finances??
Barker hasn't got the big name appeal like Winky Wright has, especially over the Atlantic. A win against Wright would open the way for big fight's in America, whereas a fight against Barker (as much as I would like to see it) wouldn't - Not to mention the extra amount of recognintion this would generate for Macklin!

Secondly you pointed out that Macklin wanted Barker when Barker was the man? Did they fight...no. Does Barker get bad mouthed? No. Now coz this fight isnt happening you say tht Macklin has forgotten his roots etc etc...is it just me or are you being a bit one sided here??? ;;-)

Maybe, but I remember that when Barker was making some half-decent defences of him Commonwealth belt, Macklin was very vocal, saying that no one wanted him. He then got Elcock, won that, carried on about Barker, and when the fight looks likely to happen it's scrapped before it's even started.
Macklin obviosly didn't want Barker as much as he told everyone who listened 18 months ago.
It's not personal but it's deffo a massive rivalry.

I think Macklin has paid his dues domestically, who knows the Barker/Macklin fight may happen in the near future but for me any English boxer that is going abroad to get himself recognised for bigger & better oopportunities I can't knock. Like I said, it's his career, every boxer has a shelf life so taking the right fights at the right time are vital.

I don't blame him taking on Winky, what I don't like is him saying that he BADLY wanted Barker - he obviosly doesn't want him THAT bad, does he?

That fight just looks jinkst. It must be thoroughly disheartening to train for 10 weeks and then the bout fall through. Macklin is ambitious and wants to make a real move onto the big stage. He can't be blamed for taking a fight with a well respected name, in the States. What if he were to wait about for Darren Barker and then it goes over again (how many times were they meant to meet?), it is around 4 months of the season gone (again).
I'd really like to see Macklin v Barker but just don't think it will happen and both must make their ways independently.

He may have wanted him bad (totally in boxing aspect lol) but when a better opportunity arises tht is going to boost your popularity what you gonna do?? ;;-)

So let me get this straight.
Hennessy pull Barker off the Wembley show as they have made the Macklin fight. THEN Macklin is matched with Ronald Wright.
This is fooking laughable. Talk abouty the Keystone cops.
The way it is going I would be surprised to see Barker ever fight again, I really would.

:?? His a 'Birmingham bottle job' because he is looking to widen his horizons???? Doubt he is scared of Barker, like i said before it's just the simple fact that Barker hasn't got the big name appeal like Winky Wright has, especially over the Atlantic. A win against Wright would open the way for big fight's in America, whereas a fight against Barker (as much as I would like to see it) wouldn't. when all is said and done boxing is still a business with boxers wanting to progress their career as effectively as possible!! Doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure this out!!

Craig McEwan is fighting on the Amir Khan bill in April, that would be a very good domestic matchup for Barker. Both undefeated and both looking to improve their names, surely they would be able to make it for the Euro belt as well.

I agree, Wright is still a very strong boxer who can conserve his energy well. He won't get hit flush all night and that strong jab may well bust Matthew up.

Macklin is 23/20 at Sportingbet for anyone that thinks Winky is past it. I do.

meh. i see this as something of a no-win for macklin.
anything less than a 10 round shutout or a stoppage win- neither of which i think he will manage- and Macklin ends up looking bad out of this IMO
my guess is after this fight people will be comparing Macklin to a Duddy.

If anyone wants to know the result in advance, just watch Winky Wright v Felix Trinidad.
This fight is going to be identical to that one with Wright's southpaw jab just a tad bit slower.

If Mackiln wins a close decision, then he'll get commended by me, but a lot of people will focus on the fact that Winky was 'shot'. If he loses then where the hell will he go? He needs to dominate Wright, and that's not too likely. Macklin will probably regret his decision, or his manager's decision, not to fight the Barkmeister.

If he fought Barker and wins he still is more or less in the same position he is in now, perhaps earning a little more respect from people like yoursleves...if he wins the Wright fight it will provide an opening for big money fight's in America, more recognition, popularity etc. A Wright win will bring these things, a Barker fight won't!
Secondly if he took the fight for Barker and lost where would he be?? Regretting the decision not to fight Wright by fighting Barker instead!
Like it or not Wright is the better fight offer! As a boxer he can't ignore that fact..

Nothing wrong with taking a fight against Wright. He'd have a tougher task ahead if he lost to Barker than he would if he lost to Winky.

It's a sh!t fight for Macklin IMO, I can't see him winning it unless Winky has lost loads of abaility during his lay-off and even if Macklin does somehow manage to get a W in this one he's guarenteed to look bad do9ng it (as do all Winkys opponents).
Just get the Barker Vs Macklin fight on FFS
