Re: good on you ed robinson!!

Once people become institutionalised they no longer have the ability to be what Robin Williams calls a 'free thinker.'
X2. Robert Smith is a genuine fella but he is the public face of the sport's administration in this country, a figure of authority, and his 'geezerish' manner does boxing no favours IMO. His heart's in the right place but I do think he should consider taking some lessons on PR and public speaking, it would be for the betterment of the sport he representsearsjohn wrote:Robert Smith lacked professionalism in his response. Any fight that effectively ends after 6 seconds with barely a a punch thrown is entitled to be called a farce.
Rather than complaining about the tone used by Robinson, I'd have preferred Smith to take at least a neutral stand - confirm that medical processes were followed and BBBC were satisfied with the fighters safety, etc and then confirm that an investigation into events would be undertaken. That would have demonstrated ownership of the situation, without coming across as defensive. Smith was there as a representative of the BBBC and not for allegedly Promotions. If a member of team Warren had taken issue with Robinsons comments (as is evident on Twitter today), that would have been understandable as they have a responsibility to defend their promotion; Smiths responsibilities are to the sport as a whole, his response should have reflected that.
Good point well made, but with respect, Ed isn't a journalist in the real sense, he is a TV interviewer — very different jobs. That's no slight on Ed but it is a fact.wrimc wrote:I love the way that everyone is shocked that a journalist chooses an inquisitive line of questioning.

Rare this Macho, but have to disagree with you on this one. Maybe I'm just showing my age, but the likes of John Morris and Simon Block, previous holders of Robert Smith's position, came across as figures of authority. In my opinion, Robert falls short on that front. It's a demeanour thing and I have certain expectations of an administrator. I'm not saying they should be public schoolboys with an innate ability to deflect questions, accusations that could certainly be leveled at Morris. I have no problem with what Robert said, just the way he said it — as I have written, his heart is in the right place. But when the public hear the head of the sport in this country talking in the 'chap' manner Smith employs (because he is a chap) it is all too easy for people to wrongly assume, as some have on this very thread, that they are 'in bed' with the promoters of a show and not overseeing the event. It's a comportment thing. But that's just my opinion.MachoMan09 wrote:Glyn Leach wrote:I do think he should consider taking some lessons on PR and public speaking, it would be for the betterment of the sport he representsD Has Deserter got you working on commission as well, mate? It seems like PR is where the money is at the moment. My heroes are all devil-may-care autocrats. All this treading on egg shells shizzle is dull. Robert Smith should say what he likes, as should Ed and any other hombre on the scene. F-ck 'em all!
Yeah I'm a bit surprised by Buncey using the ' I bet you wouldn't say that to his face attitude'johnswan1 wrote:What are you saying Buncey, don't criticise a professional boxer unless you are prepared to have a punch up with him yourself? Pathetic. It was a farce. I hate this "brave behind a screen" talk. And if you'd said that in the first place, no-one would have taken issue with that. I'm also surprised that you've consciously or subconsciously skirted around the issue of the betting patterns...Buncey wrote:I have no problem with fans on forums or at fights moaning, but some of the comments are over the top and question the heart and motivation of boxers.
i wouldn't. he does that all the time. he 'pulls rank' over us 'keyboard warriors' and throws his toys out of the pram any time he takes umbrage at some 'internet nerd'LeedsLad wrote:Maybe Smigga stole his password![]()
It is a pretty lame response from Steve, I agree..... to be honest I'd have expected better from him.

which is fine. just remember, next time he says 'trust me', that he once followed those words with the phrase 'Audley Harrison will be world heavyweight champion'. THATS your tells-it-like-he-sees it neither-fear-nor-favour boxing journo, for you.

That is a fair enough point and I guess it comes down to what sort of line that Sky want to take as obviously Ed doesn't want to be to inflammatory or state opinions that might not be that of Sky as a whole. He surely needs to be given allowed to ask the questions with an opinion that echo's the viewing public's. Everybody has a different job. The promoter to defend the show, the boxer to explain his performance, the board official to give a neutral appraisal of the events from an officiating point of view and the interviewer to ask the best questions possible to get the best responses from each of these characters.Glyn Leach wrote:Good point well made, but with respect, Ed isn't a journalist in the real sense, he is a TV interviewer — very different jobs. Ed can't tell you how impressed I was with your reaction and questioning! This openess is what is needed; boxing is in a good place primarily because of sky's commitment to it- you guys have the power to speak out on the fans behalf!ed robinson wrote:I actually regret what I said in my interview last night but hindsight is a wonderful thing. At the time I had a few seconds to get to Robert Smith before they threw to me and it was the first question that came into my head. Smith is a good guy and he obviously could not hear the studio chat regarding Nicky discussing his bad back at the weigh-in. He probably did not know about the betting either. I should have eased into it more, informed him of what we knew and asked about Nicky's qualifications to fight for the title and the Board's procedure regarding pre fight medical checks. As I say, it's all so easy with hindsight. Coco is right - Joe Calzaghe has said that he very nearly pulled out before the fight with Lacy because of injuries. Wladimir never mentioned that his Dad was close to death in the build up to his fight with Haye, I'm sure Kevin Mitchell had plenty on his mind going into the fight with Murray. No boxer is ever worry free going into a fight but they think with optimism.

Others opinions in the past have been quietened by threats of legal action, bans etc, but at the end of the day you guys pay the bills with OUR money! We have the right to complain and demand better.
I find it interesting this new channel has popped up on satellite; could it be that someone is thinking of going alone?
Don't get me wrong, Ed got in there and asked the question that a lot of people are saying they wanted answered. You can't do better than that as any form of interviewer. It's just typical of the man Ed is that he worried so much about it afterwards, questioned himself. Translation? Ed comes accross a nice bloke. I still think it should have been rejected as world title fight by sky.Glyn Leach wrote:Don't get me wrong, Ed got in there and asked the question that a lot of people are saying they wanted answered.
