First of all this is one of the worst posts i have read on a boxing forum.
Rios hasn't beat anybody?
Miguel acosta-Great win for Rios, Acosta is top 5 in the division IMO. Very skilled and heavy handed fighter.
Urbano Antillon-Good win against a top 10 lightweight.
Anthony Peterson-Good win against a decent fighter even if his record was padded.
Murray has a chance? No he doesn't.
Rios isn't a puncher? Yes he is.
Jorge Linares and Katsidis are the best in the division? Katsidis has been beaten at the top level consistantly. And what has Jorge Linares proved at Lightweight? Beating Adrian Devurgo?

And now he has walked straight into a vacant title shot which is a disgrace. There is no doubting Linares is talented but his chin is shaky and it will be found out at Lightweight.
You also say John Murray has good boxing ability

Really? Murray fights one way and one way only...aggressively, Murray is very limited and will be took out within 4 rounds. Rios is better in every department.

People think just because Rios stopped him means he isn't amongst the elite at 135 lbs. He gets no credit for the way he boxed in the first 6 or 7 rounds against Rios. He will win another world title im sure of it and i would fancy him against Rios if they were to fight again. Acosta is fighting next week for the interim WBA so hopefully next year he can get the rematch with Rios because there first fight was a cracker.

I think you saved a lot of people from wasting energy by typing this reply. To say Rios isn't a big hitter is laughable to be honest. He packs concussive power in both fists.

Look Rios is good, but he is overated and been created into a world beater!!!!!
Antillon gave one good fight against soto - who i reckons past it now
Acosta is a very good fighter but his beard is fragile, he looks very dry at the weight, think he'd get sparked by katsidis / Linares but earlier
Peterson hadn't fought no one and was found wanting when he moved up in class
Don't get me wrong Murray made for him but defo has a chance if he uses his head and trys to box the guy
People are jumping on Rios bandwagon too much - i like him because he goes for it and is exciting but to say Murray has no chance!!!
Mitchell has the skills and the talent to counter this guy all night and win a ud no doubt
A real test for the lads credentials would be a fight against katsidis who will stand and trade with the guy - that would be a war!!!

Another poor post mate.
Antillon is a solid world level fighter.
Acosta's beard is not fragile, please don't go boxrec records and make assumptions, he hasn't got a iron jaw but it's solid enough imo.
Linares and Katsidis would stop Acosta earlier then Rios?

Linares would get destroyed just like he did against Salgado at 130, he doesn't have the power or the chin to be affective at 135. As for Katsidis he would have a chance but he is a poorer version of Rios and i would expect Acosta to completely outbox him just like Guerrero did.
As for Mitchell, he does have the skills to outbox Rios at times..But he doesn't have the chin or toughness to stand upto the pressure and power punches of Rios. If Acosta who is far more skilled then Mitchell can't do it, no chance Kev can.

One thing that hasn't been asked is why Rios has taken the fight. He is undefeated in 29 fights and is World Champion. This is a no win fight for him. If he blows Murray away, it was expected. If he wins on points, it's a disappointing win. If he loses, his career will take a massive dent.
I suppose Murray has got nothing to lose, but Rios has everything to lose. He should be pushing on to fight World renowned names and P4P ranked fighters, not a British guy few people outside Britian have heard of whose last fight was a knockout loss to another British guy who was knocked out by Katsidis.

Murray isn't winning this fight IMO. They both have similar styles, but Rios does everything better than him. Murray hasn't the power to take out Rios, or really hurt him.
If I'm honest - I could see Murray heading for retirement after this one. Could be a brutal fight..

Why is everyone crying and wringing their hands that Murray is 'being thrown to the wolves'. He's an experienced prizefighter in his late 20s ffs! Hes already had 30 odd 'confidence builders'. Its now or never. I'll nver understand why fans on this forum get so upset when a UK fighter goes into a tough match. It always 'oh no Burns/Brook/Degale/Haye/Macklin/Murray/Mitchell/ Barker need another 400 fights against 'solid top 10 contenders' before they even dream of fighting a yank for a belt!
Even if Murray gets brutally stopped he can still go back to topping rubbish bills. The Burns fight will happen no matter what.

themadmariner wrote:One thing that hasn't been asked is why Rios has taken the fight.
Because he's been told to, by his manager & or promoter. Plus it's a nice showcase for him in NY - and it'll be a nice payday against someone who'll be right in front of him, no having to go chasing after John Murray.
He'll be coming right at Rios, so it should be a terrific TV & fan friendly fight.
I really hope John has a good game plan here, so he can do himself proud. He's got to remember he was 35-0 ( or whatever ) and is an incredibly tough fighter with a massive heart, and not just some fall guy for the US star to feast on.

I don't have a problem with this match per se, just that I find it odd that after a big loss Murray gets to fight for a world title.

Murray doesn't become a bad fighter after one defeat. Its threads like this that helps people believe keeping the '0' is important.
Plenty of fighters have bounced back from defeat, lets not fully rule out Murray.
Josh, I agree in part with you, but boxing is about timing your chances properly.
Coming off the back of a knockout loss to a domestic puncher, and then travelling to America to fight the WBA champion, division and Ring #1 ... and a widely regarded bad ass is not going to do John's career any good whatsoever long term.
He's lost to a 7/10 fighter and is now going straight in with a 9/10 fighter.
There is no way Murray is going to change his style in such a short space of time. And if he gets destroyed, it could have long-lasting repercussions on him for the remainder of his career.
Rios is a beast. He is looking for Maidana next and has already blasted-out Urbano Antillon in 3 rounds, and knocked out Acosta too.
Antillon had a war with Soto - and yet was wiped out by Rios, who is on fire right now.
This wont be a gallant Macklin v Sturm fight, it's a mismatch I'm sad to say.
And I say that as a fan of John's. I've been ringside or in the crowd for well over half his career. From London to Manchester.
maybe he's going for broke and a world title payday to go with the world title opportunity.

i enjoyed watching him on the way up, and said that he'd win domestic and european titles when others said he's get beaten the first time he stepped up, etc.
he's still a good fighter despite the mitchell defeat, and the win over (the admittedly smaller) buckland looks better now, with buckland's prize fighter and british title successes (down at 130).
i thought mitchell could not be underestimated, as he had his back to the wall (career wise and in terms of the style matchup).
rios would always be favoured, no doubt about that.

How can a fighter be allowed to contest for a 'World' title after a loss?...Not only that but after a knockout loss! This totally devalues a 'World' title and more so devalues boxing.
Also if Murray happened to win how can we have a 'World' champion who's just been defeated by another British fighter? Does it make sense?...So to get a big fight, a 'World' title shot we're better off losing a domestic big fight before hand to do so?! ..Where is the incentive?....And how is it right??
it makes sense - it would mean that he'd put the defeat behind him, that he'd gone ahead of mitchell, that he'd beaten someone the americans are building up due to his gritty and competitive fights, and that murray would be ehading toward good money matchups with mitchell (again) or burns (coming up in weight after making a diplomatic decision).
