What do you mean by "fringe contender"?

Peterson was ranked about 6th in the world before he beat Khan last night, so I would say he is a contender rather than just a fringe contender.
Maybe cos he was sent packing by Bradley with scores of 120-107 ?

Let's be honest Horse, the guy was hand picked for Khan to look good against. GBP never wanted him to win.. They had him on the books as a 'filler' for their starlets - just like Maidana.

Khan has only himself to blame here, he should have won the fight decisively. Ariza said it was the best version of Khan yet. Roach took the opponent with a pinch of salt too. He was saying "When Khan puts Peterson away, I want Rios. I want Amir to welcome him to 140 by knockout" after the Parkinson's jibes during PAC vs Margarito 24/7.

Peterson was nothing special last night, but a sprinkle of pressure saw Khan in a mess. Unlike Cotto who was fully in control of space and was timing Margarito beautifully, Khan just didn't know what to do. Then he reverted back to type, grinning and raising his gloves whenever he was clearly tagged. He couldn't get anything off.

Barrera was the easiest of the three Mexicans for him to fight and he was well beaten. Morales would have ruined him. I would say that he'd never have fought again but he only had one more after Barrera and stunk the joint out.

Marquez would have toyed with him too, 120-108 x3.

Nope, don't buy that. He saw off Kevin Kelly while having an open hit me stance. Had he trained better, tightned up his defence and learnt better boxing skills he could have done all of them.

Problem is that he never did any of that. What if the three Mexicans also tightened up their defense and learnt better boxing skills?

Such as.....

1. Constantly talking about opponents not deserving X amount of money or asking for too much.

2. Accusing world class fighters of being scared.

3. Having staff paid to sit on Twitter all day and mouth off at people.

4. Constant gaffes when being interviewed.

So.... will a defeat like this where (reading the reports, I'm waiting for the replay) he might have been hard done by teach him a lesson, in that he's not the be all and end all, and needs to earn the position in the sport that he craves?
Yeah, that's not perhaps the most damning list of offences i've ever seen.

Anyway, im a bit removed from the day to day procedings, but what has Khan done wrong now?

He has been in some high quality, very entertaining fights over the last couple of years.

What else can you ask for?

Nail on the head dude.

Also, all that stuff about Washington DC was a bit strong. Saying that when you fight in DC you are likely to get robbed as if it was common knowledge. When even was the last big fight there?

The last big fights in DC were Bowe/Ferguson and RJJ/Hopkins.

I don't think anyone believes Jesse or Bernard got robbed that night.

But the real reason why the fight happenned there is because Riddick Bowe himself was from Maryland, Washington, so after defeating Evander and throwing the WBC Belt in the bin because he didn't fancy fighting Lennox, he decided to have a nice easy first defence in his own back yard.

Loved the way Michael Dokes was trying to intimidate him just beforethe fight with the eyeball look!

Naz didn't want to did he? Manny Steward was taken on after his loss I think it was to MAB but he just didn't seem to want to do what he needed to do.

I don't think Erik Morales needed much more improving. A great fighter with great heart. He would have had a great chance in out pointing Naz as did MAB, I would be looking for a Naz win on his power and speed basis, if he ever had got back to being serious about winning etc.

That was two years ago, I think he is probably a bit better now. His draw with Ortiz would suggest that he is a contender rather than a fringe contender.

What do you consider to be a regular contender rather than a fringe contender?

Is Maidana a fringe contender as well?

So Cotto did better than Khan, are you saying that Khan isn't as good as Cotto yet?

Cotto didn't do as well the first time he fought Margarito, it didn't mean that Cotto wasn't a very good world class fighter.

other posters have hit the nail on the head, Khan for all his talent and success so far, just has this bloody annoying ability to run needlessly, jump around like a bunny, he just cant fight standing still, he reverts to that amateurish style of arm slapping flurries, look at the way he exposes all his ribs and body when he does that, and than look at the way Peterson had his arms tucked into his ribs and his chin tucked in on every punch he threw, check that compact style with Khans. Right now he is still an accident waiting to happen against mayweather who would probably break his ribs with one counter, UNLESS.....he learns to understand distance,...ala froch....to learn a plan b...how to conserve his energy and fight patiently in the centre ground....he sure as hell would punch a lot harder that way....dont get me wrong i know its his style and its got him far......but since the maidana fight he has that crazy running in and out style which entertaining tho it has been in these brawls....i just think its a fine line with him adding all this grabbing and jumping on his opponents backs....he looked like the reincanation of wlad v sam peter the first time

khan needs to shut up and just box great fight on peterson's part but this is just a slip up for khan his game plan went out the window and wtf was he thinking standing on the ropes and letting peterson punch him clean. less of the macho stuff please. cant wait for the rematch if khan wins that makes he a 4 times champ there is gunna be no stopping his mouth then lol

Just watched the fight, changed my mind, Peterson deserved the win, though I wasn't paying as much attention as I should have done as knowing the result already put me off a bit.

As usual radio makes it sound like a completely different fight on the whole.

I thought there was only 3 clear rounds Khan won by, 1, 2 and 9. Are the judges allowed to score on a 10-10 basis for individual rounds? Round 6 I say was leaning towards Khan but maybe an even round.

My general take on the fight having seen it now rather than just listning to it on the radio........

Khan's style was all wrong. The moving back all the time wasn't good, it allowed the pressure off Lamont and Lamont to his credit chased Khan and had more ring generalship and landed more power punches. Khan should have been jabbing more while moving forward and if facing a counter attack, generally stand his ground, duck, block and then go for a general hold.

The holding of the head by Khan was stupid as was the pushes but ref should have warned Khan he would take a point off before doing so.

I don't recall Khan being this way against Zab Juddah, I think the HBO guys where right calling Khan wreckless.

I think that with Pacquio fighting just a couple of weekends before must have taken the focus off Amir and this isn't good. Either they fight at seperate times and Khan gets mote attention from Roach or Khan needs a new trainer but whom?

Manny Steward could be good for Khan, but will Khan be able to pick up and adapt to all the moves Manny will want him to pick up? What good ex fighters would be good trainers for Amir?

Not to be pedantic but Bowe was famously from Brownsville, New York, the same neighbourhood as Mike Tyson. I think he moved to Washington after winning the titles though.

And without going off track, I don't blame Bowe for wanting to take a few lucrative easy defences after such an epic brawl with Holyfield. Going straight in with Lewis would have been ridiculous!

Anyway, back to Khan...

some good points, the Khan - Wlad comparison holds a fair bit of water IMO

This confused me first...but technically he'd be a 2-time IBF champion and a 2-time WBA champion...(not saying I'd refer to him as a 4 time champion mind).

Hatton was Humble a large part of his career with Warren as he was content on milking his WBU belt.

When he targeted the bigger fights, he was calling them out just like any other Boxer.

Only difference i see is Khan has been calling out the bigger fights sooner.

I think it's an issue of his mouth writing cheques that his skills can't cash. He's slagged off Froch (the current darling of British) and the fans (the "If I was white"), as well as his comments about DC and in ability to give Peterson credit... as well as coming across...poorly on twitter (interaction with fans).

He's talented and all boxing fans will acknowledge that but he lets himself down.

Because apparently hyping yourself up, and trying to aim or the big title fights constitutes as arrogant.

He should be like the domestic boxers here in Britain fighting for 5% of what he gets for the English title. /Sarcasm

Amir Khan may not be the sharpest tool in the box, but these people who call him arrogant want to look at the likes of Mayweather, Brandon Rios, Magarito or even Haye to and extent etc.

These guys have done everything from burnt money at parties, humiliate their own father because their so "badass", made fun of people with Parkinson's, allegedly cheating through potentially lethal extents and insult boxers and their families.

But yeah, Fck Khan, who does he think he is for wanting superfights. Pr1ck!
