Monzon wins a close fight during the championship rounds. As good as Bernard was, he wasn't Carlos Monzon.

I cannot see no middleweight in history beating the great Carlos Monzon in a 3 fight series

I think you are right Salsa old bean, but with the exception of Sugar ray Robinson but the Sugar man would need to be at his peak.

Far as middleweights are concerned... the best in my view were... Greb, Robinson, Monzon and Conn...
Conn seems odd on the list because he never won the MW title, but I would argue he was a superior middleweight than as a light heavyweight (where I'd also put him in the top five).

I have no doubt, that Monzon would have won Hopkins. Carlos was simply a better fighter, than Bernard. Monzon's near perfect style was too much for Hopkins, who wouldn't be able to counterpose his viscous spoiling manner of fighting to such a class. Monzon by clear decision or possibly by a late stoppage.

Fake tough guy Hopkins lacks character. Hitting low but crying when someone hits him borderline? Rabbit punching but diving to the floor and howling if someone cuffs him round the back? Twice-twice!-failing the IQ test versus ring dummy Jermain Taylor? Faking injuries and claiming fouls in fights he's losing?
Real tough guy Monzon would find that empty space where B-hop's heart is meant to be and work him over good.
In the 60s and 70s without the myriad belts, record massaging and TV hoopla Hopkins is a solid 20-20-5 (14) type of pug.
