This fight wasn't stopped at the right time though, was it?
I'd say that's a matter of opinion, split about 50-50 on this forum. I thought the timing was fine, the execution was poor.

They are grown men who are trained fighters, not little kids who need excessive protection.
The corners can throw in the towel or pull the fighter out in between rounds if they are taking serious damage. It is not the referee's job to make sure that there is no possibility that someone gets hurt.
Should a fight stop every time a fighter gets hurt by a big shot?

That's your opinion. Some others don't share it.

There's noway we are all going to agree on this one. If IJL didn't stop the fight and Corley landed with a haymaker and knocked McCloskey out there would be guys on here going bush saying he should have stopped the fight. I think IJL just panicked when he saw Paul do the funny dance and I think he relized 2secs after he jumped in that he may have made a mistake, I am on the fence on this one because its easy for us to judge from the comfort of our sofa, but when your in there you probs only get a split second to react and decide. Its a thankless task.

That's a facile question. Each fight is different, in these circumstances I believe the ref made the right call. You clearly didn't, I can appreciate that view, but don't share it.

McCloskey was hurt by a good shot and reacted to it, but was ready to keep fighting. Do you really think he should have been stopped?
You should share my view, because it is the correct view to hold.

I think he was losing the fight, he was hurt, but could be recovered. If the fight go to the distance, no doubt McCloskey would have won, like in the fight with Prescott. One thing is clear, McCloske is a fighter for euro-brit level, i think he couldn't win Shafikov actually.

Great line.
I know it's a cliche but I'm always for the safety of an earlier stoppage rather than the regret of a second too late.

Thats me finally got round to watching the fight, had seen this thread make 4 pages and knew something worth watching had happened.
I think the referee has probably done the right thing here, people are saying "careers are on the line" etc but lets be honest, lives are on the line if the ref doesn't react. There is the possibility that McCloskey could have recovered and won on points but there is also the possibility that he could have been seriously hurt in the next exchange as his legs were gone!
In McCloskeys shoes I would be gutted at the stoppage. Gotta give a lot of respect for how he conducted himself in the post fight interview.
BUT In the ref's shoes I would rather be the guy who stopped a fight early than be the guy who stopped a fight too late!

I thought he was right to stop the fight but he took too long to do so, had he jumped in and held McCloskey at the same time waving it off In my opinion it would have been a perfect stoppage but he hesitated and by the time he did eventually say "no more" McCloskey had recovered.

Yeah, it was as if he wanted to administer a standing 8 count and then thought "shit I am in the Uk".
he gets between them very quickly and then does nothing. He even stops to talk to McCloskey before waving it off.

If mcCloskey didn't do all the kidology crap it might have been different. When a fighter does that its a sure sign that he's hurt but I'd think it could confuse the ref at the same time. There wasnt too much protesting from dudeys corner either.

what was the big deal with mccloskey, someone asked?
he's irish, which supposedly makes him cool.
he's promoted by matchroom, right place right time, etc.
a fighter of his style should be leaner and sharper and should move more. always looked a bit soft to me. was he supposed to have been a top amateur?

Bad stoppage imo, maybe I'm old school, but for me boxing is a men's sport, people are gona get hurt in fights and the whole idea of boxing should be to see if they can get through that wobble. It's all 'ifs, buts and maybe's', people saying that Corley would have stopped him with the next punch and he would have been KO'd badly, who can really say that with any certainty?
It is quite rare to see a stoppage of a guy on his feet who has never been down once in the fight. Whether he'd been wobbled previously or not, whether he was winning or losing the fight, I certainly felt he should have been given the chance to carry on, as I did Crolla in his fight.
The fact it was Ian John lewis really doesn't help matters either, as he has been involved in some shocking decisions previously and in my view isn't fit to be refereeing at any sort of high level.
I do agree about some of the things people are saying about McCloskey, he's nowt special and nothing above Euro level, but it's not really the point in the case of the stoppage.

It's all a matter of personal opinion, but at that time Corley landed the last shot my instinctive reaction was "McCloskey is gone", so I think the stoppage was correct. That was also based around his performance throughout the whole fight - he never seemed at the races, and his nose was badly busted up.
In comparison Ola Afolabi seemed just as hurt on several occasions, but I felt that he was still in the fight, and still had a good chance of getting to Huck.
IJL has dropped the ball many, many times in recent memory, but I think he got this one right. Hearn and co haven't had much to say in protest, which says something.

Although McCloskey wasn't boxing well, I still had him well in the fight, if it had gone to the judges it surely would have been really tight. Anyone know what the scorecards were at the time of the stoppage out of interest?
