To be honest I think that was a terrible stoppage. I look at how Bute was clearly saved by the ref vs Andrade at the end of their first fight. I see the same here but in opposite, Chavez was clearly given some help by the ultra quick stoppage. I don't blame Chavez for it but I feel he got clearly a gift TKO here just like he got a gift vs Whitaker. King was protecting his investment.

I doubt there'd be as much complaining if Chavez had been way ahead at the time of the stoppage, but I know of no such rule that tells a referee he must take that into consideration.
That's an excellent point.

I always thought it was a travesty that this fight was stopped. Taylor got to his feet, and the fight was over. Chavez wouldn't have had time to land another punch.

That's the bottom line, it's a shame GI isn't here for his famous and idiotic take that the referee isn't required to know how much time is left.

I would've had no problem with the stoppage if there were even 30 seconds left in the bout, because Taylor was clearly beaten, but like I said...it was over. No time left for him to receive further damage...plus the red light was flashing on the corner post directly behind Richard Steele, indicating the round was in it's final 10 seconds.

Interesting read.
My thoughts:
1. I couldn't care less about how Steele reffed years earlier. Boxing's become more safety conscious with quicker stoppages.
2. I've seen no evidence he was in King's pocket.
3. The time left is irrelevant.
4. I also think past fighter history is irrelevant.
5. I wouldn't have had a problem with a stoppage in Vazquez/Marquez III, but I don't think the fights are exactly analogous, for as I recall it, Marquez didn't fail to answer any referee questions.
6. I've never seen the standard for stopping a fight as whether the opponent could've thrown another punch. The ref isn't the timekeeper, and it isn't his job to know how much time is left. The standard is whether or not a fighter can defend himself. Taylor didn't answer Steele's question, which Steele asked twice. I think Steele acted appropriately.

Steele knew how much time was left and he knew he was about to collect a huge bonus from Don King.

Absolutely correct. Taylor couldn't, end of fight.

The conspiracy theorists can wallow in their own grief.
Steele was massively inconsistent. Anyone that doesn't admit that needs therapy. Proof below....

Hearns - Barkley (skip to 8:20 on the video)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0uhAZeEA54

Steele asks Hearns if he's OK, Hearns' eyes are in seperate orbits, he doesn't even look at Steele let alone speak or nod. RESULT - Steele lets him continue.

Chavez - Taylor (skip to 1:40 on the video)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgenYK7VaxY

Steele asks Talyor if he's OK, Taylor doesn't reply. RESULT - Steele stops the fight.

Anyone like to explain why?

At a guess I'd say the dates had something to do with it. Perhaps Steele was so sick of people whinging about the Taylor stoppage he thought fvck it, as long as a fighter can stand up, I'll let him carry on.

Hearns/Barkley was a long time before Taylor/Chavez.

After a frantic check of the records to make sure I was correct. I see even my stalker has no response for his buffoonery here. I usually don't even bother with your posts, that was just too stupid to pass up.

Don't flatter your pond life little self. I've made no response to your garbage posts for a few weeks,
I see your horrendous sense of time is not relegated to Boxing. Oh well, nobody expects much from you. As for your pond life joke, I know we all laughed the first time. That's about 50 times now, you need some new material.

I don't need new material I get enough laughs seeing some of the crap you write. Now lets see what we've had in the last day or two.

The post layoff Ali was just as fast as the pre layoff Ali.

Richard Steele was on the take from Don King.

Pure comedy gold.

I've never said Ali was as fast after the layoff.

As for Don King dishing out bribes. Yeah, that's unthinkable.

I didn't realise Chavez was over-rated around here and I fail to see why :o He dominated for a hell of a long time and fought and beat the overwhelming majority of them. Never lost a single fight in his prime

Don King giving out bribes isn't the issue.

Your baseless assumption that Steele might have taken them, on the other hand,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Exactly. King's slime. Doesn't have anything to do with Steele. Any ref could be trashed by that logic.

one can argue both sides without being an idiot,
which spells to me: controversy yes, robbery no.

to me the taylor-jcc stoppage is less problematic,
than ali-foreman, in which the reigning champ beat
the count at the very end of the round.

First thing I remember is the fact I watched this live on HBO!!! No pay per view!! That was nice!

I remember thinking how even though Taylor was landing so many punches & some of the fastest combinations I've seen, he couldn't rock Chavez. He couldn't slow him down while Chavez was taking little pieces of Meldrick round by round. I do wish he'd won the fight. I can't imagine the disappointment. Just killed his career. An immediate rematch might have helped.

Looks like Foxy has been banned. Shocking how long he lasted. One of the worst I've seen.
