Re: Walsh out of Burns fight
It's time for Burns to put his foot down really. Too many fighters hide behind 'I just fight who my promoters want me to fight' nonsense. Nelson seems so convinced that Burns has to the tools he should be harassing Warren to make the fight before somebody else exposes these flaws that Broner has

I'm one of Burns biggest fans, i really am, and i do agree in part with this. But maybe he IS harrassing warren...do you know for sure he isn't?lefthook82 wrote:It's time for Burns to put his foot down really. Are we suggesting that Ricky is going to become an inside pressure fighter against Broner? Certainly seems to be what Billy is suggesting, but it would be a big change for Ricky, who likes to dictate from the outside behind an excellent jab, whereas Honeyghan was always that fighter. If the fight gets made, I'll be cheering Ricky on, and I'd love to be wrong about the result.
on the hand's other side, broner presents a very difficult proposition purely on the basis of his physicality RE athleticism and strength
again...they were coming out with all sorts of shit about lacy before calzaghe gave him a boxing lesson. and before any idiotic comments, i am not comparing burns style/record/tactics, to joes. iam simply stating that looking good in a few fights against specially selected opposition ,does not make them unbeatable. burns has world class fitness, strength, and dedication ...togrther with disipline and a continuing desire to learn and improve. technically , he can do it all , and he has the correct mentality. so im not going to write him off just because some yank turns up looking flash.
Re: Walsh out of Burns fight
It's apples and oranges though. They were saying Lacy was the next Mike Tyson, based on a couple of performances over a finished Robin Reid, Omar Sheika and Scott Pemberton. He was hideously limited and overrated, he didn't have much overall game or boxing ability but because he was aggressive, looked the part and had some power in the left hook.
Calzaghe and the whole promotion/experience totally mind-fucked him, he was beaten before the bell went and had his misery compounded by the end of the first.

Re: Walsh out of Burns fight
I do wonder who the opponent could be - part of me thought it might be a Jason Litzau type figure to at least capture the American media's attention a little more if not the public, but then i do remember it is a 'ticking over' fight so i do expect a European at best (Emiliano Marsili?) but more than likely see a domestic level opponent coming in, perhaps non-title - Would the likes of Derry or Crolla take this fight?
All the best to Walsh - hope he has a speedy recovery

Re: Walsh out of Burns fight
Judgments about the outcome of this potential match should be predicated solely on factors immediately relevant to Broner and Burns, such as their abilities and styles. Extrapolating results from other fights based on broad similarities (e.g. nationality and relative levels of hype) ignores the more specific and relevant factors that produced those results, and one must then account for examples of highly regarded Americans defeating lesser regarded Brits. I find it ironic that the abilities of all the relevant boxers are rarely mentioned when people use the Calzaghe-Lacy comparison, even though it was the former's superior ability that enabled him to defeat the latter; you think that 'burns has world class fitness, strength (really?), and dedication, but what do you think of Broner's abilities?again...they were coming out with all sorts of shit about lacy before calzaghe gave him a boxing lesson. and before any idiotic comments, i am not comparing burns style/record/tactics, to joes. iam simply stating that looking good in a few fights against specially selected opposition ,does not make them unbeatable. burns has world class fitness, strength, and dedication ...togrther with disipline and a continuing desire to learn and improve. technically , he can do it all , and he has the correct mentality. so im not going to write him off just because some yank turns up looking flash.
How is Broner 'very weak defensively' and in which bouts is this apparent? Why do you think that Burns will stop Broner? The former has won only 10 of 37 bouts by stoppage; recentely failed budge Katsidis or Moses, who have both been dropped or stopped by non-punchers; and the latter has never been hurt.daviddee wrote:I think Ricky wins this although it is a 50-50 fight... And Ricky will stop Broner.
I agree, but that fight was several years ago and represented a huge step up for Broner. How do you think he's looked since?G0mez wrote:I thought Broner was very poor against Ponce De Leon.
Burns does have a chance in this one.
Broner's opponents have largely fitted the mold of the tough, but limited fighter who prefers trading inside over boxing outside. It may be that a tall, skilled, outside fighter is anathema to Broner, so it would be interesting to see how he copes with such an opponent. Burns is tall, skilled, and can box from a distance, but can he do so consistently? Would his skills enable him to overcome Broner's superior talent? Would Broner turn out to be an even more skilled boxer than Burns?Counter-puncher wrote: I think Billy was saying Broner has defensive flaws which will be brought out if someone pushed him onto the backfoot, which Burns's good jab and the length of his frame might give him a chance to do, and that letting Broner get a head of steam up by letting him get on the front foot is the wrong thing to do

Hopefully they fight and we get some answers.
Re: Walsh out of Burns fight
I'm not convinced that the Broner fight will happen, but I am also of the opinion that that will not be because Ricky doesn;t want it.RonnieTheSharkClark wrote:I would love to see Ricky fight Broner and prove everyone wrong! Ricky is very much underestimated and its sad that the British public put him down every chance they get! Walsh knew he would not beat Ricky and it was obvious that fight would not happen just yet! I hope Ricky gets a good fight possibly someone with Broner style then take things from there... Broner will happen next year unless Ricky moves up weight again he seems to be physically getting bigger, stronger, faster and maturing physically over the past few years
For Burns, its a no lose assignment (and I think he would lose, probably by either late stoppage of wide points decision) - he would ship a belt that he only won in recess, to a guy that most people would rate in the top five or six in the world pound for pound - his wins over Martinez, Katsidis and Mitchell would be good enough that he would not drop back to domestic level (unless one of Rees, Mitchell or Murray has somehow contrived a spurious belt) and he would probably find that by the end of the year he would have another shot at another belt - perhaps his old one as Broner moves up.
But I'm not sure what this really brings for Broner. Burns is not a name in the States, so the payday would not be massive as a risk vs reward assessment, especially when there are so many bigger fights a weight above for him...

I know no more than anybody else but I read some quotes from Burns re the Walsh fight that made it sound like he was not at all happy with the opponent. Hopefully he is in Warrens ear. The contract he signed wouldn't last forever and I could imagine Matchroom happily snapping him up considering his ticket selling capabilities and pedigreeCrazyboy wrote:I'm one of Burns biggest fans, i really am, and i do agree in part with this. i've still got my money on there being no fight. with a side bet on there being no show at all.

What bookie gave you a price for those bets? What odds did you get?vxrandall wrote:lefthook82 wrote:
