Re: Looks like team burns bottled it
I really don't understand the negativity towards Burns. Yes - a couple of his title defences have been against weak opposition e.g. Cook, Laryea, Evensen, but he's also fought Katsidis, Martinez and Mitchell where he was either underdog or generally deemed 50:50 and Moses was a strong opponent so I doubt very much he lacks bottle.
All of the post fight interviews I've seen with him he says he doesn't get involved with the matchmaking and leaves it to his manager/promotor but would like the opportunity to unify and fight for the ring belt.
As people saying he moved up to lightweight to avoid Broner, for me it's pretty clear weight was a factor. Burns looks massive at lightweight so must have been tough to make 9'4.
I hope the Broner fight comes off but if there's a sneaky mandatory first then so be it. The only way I'd be pissed off is if he fought Walsh, Ocampo or Harrison as they don't deserve a title shot

We drove up to Glasgow for Burns-Martinez, then headed down to London for Katsidis-Burns, with a few other fights thrown in over the years for good measure. I think Broner's people are showing a lot of faith in him. It would be awesome if Burns could capitalise on this rush to get the fight on as his steady Eddie style will go a long way to off-setting Broner's style. It will pan out how it pans out, it was written.
I've said it before & I'll say it again. I myself would go see Burns vs Broner, even though I live Daaahn Sarf. & also Broner's athletic ability compensates for some bloody awful technical flaws & I think at his age he might come unstuck against someone fit, brave, with sound technical skills & a gameplan.
EDIT: Obviously, in that last sentence I was referring to a certain Scottish lightweight who is trained (not managed, dickhead) by a valued member of this online community.

"Ricky moved up because he couldnt make the weight safely you effing idiot.what bit of that is hard for you to understand?"
Billy, the thing is though, the time that he couldn't safely make the weight was between July and November 2011; he was 27 or 28 at the time, and precisely at the time that he couldn't safetly make the weight, his mandatory challenger happened to be a very talented and dangerous unbeaten chap in Broner. If Team Burns are adamant that Ricky just couldn't boil down to super-featherweight again, hence vacating and moving up, well fair enough - not everyone was convinced but these things do happen. However, he's now at lightweight and that same talented and unbeaten Broner is offering him a fight on a plate - there is a fixed date, tv coverage, venue, the lot, and Ricky's got plenty of time to prepare. Ricky has talked of big unification fights for a long time and the Americans are offering him one right now against Broner. Yet it appears that once again Ricky and his team are reluctant to face this guy.
When it happens once its unfortunate, but when it happens twice it is ridiculous.
You wouldn't be the brilliant, successful and admirably loyal trainer that you are if you didn't come on here and slag off the sceptics and remind us that Ricky has proven the doubters wrong many times before. Fair enough. But it looks, feels, smells and sounds like Ricky Burns wants absolutely nothing to do with Broner.

Re: Looks like team burns bottled it
Broner isn't very good, well he is but he's not superman, people are going nuts over his last performance when he beat DeMarco, DeMarco lost to Valero more easier and he's dead ffs.
Re: Looks like team burns bottled it
If the argument for not fighting Broner is because he has to fight a mandatory - read below:
"(a) The World Championship Committee has the power and authority to sanction a Unification Bout or participation in a unification tournament as a Mandatory Title Bout. A Unification Bout is a championship bout with the champion of another world sanctioning organization recognized by the WBO, including the WBA, the WBC and the IBF. A Unification Tournament is a tournament of single elimination bouts involving 4 Champions or top contenders of 2 or more WBO recognized world sanctioning organizations."
From the WBO's Rules and Regs.
Pretty sure that means Broner-Burns would be OK as far as the WBO were concerned.......

Re: Looks like team burns bottled it
Billy you really have not made much of a solid argument in reguards to ducking broner, and please tell me more about this WBO mandatory that is just as tough as broner???. I think it would be fair to say team burns (maybe not burns himself) dont think he could beat broner. However brurns himself still should take alot of the blame as he should demanding the fight. Arnt these the fight every boxer dreams of??
Dont you just wish every fighter had the froch mentality, anyone, anywhere, anytime-only the best will do no tune ups necessary. Burns and him team could learn alot from froch. If he truly wants to become a legend and universially respected he has to take the fight. Look at froch, he lost the biggest fight of his career (ward) but no one holds it against him. While no one would claim we was ever better than calzaghe or could beat him he is held in higher reguard in terms of reputation and respect to most fans because of the fights he took and the location in fought them. If Burns does not fight Broner everyone will remeber this and he will go down massivly in most peoples estimation becoming nothing more than a paper champ.

Watch Broner fight his timing is bad he leans back massively... He struggles to defend body head combinations!!! Ricky will beat Broner when it happens ;) I have faith in the Rickster and him not taking the fight in Feb is great!!! He was preparing for a southpaw and forward fighter which is total opposite to Broner!?! :s Middle of the year Ricky will fight Broner I'm sure if Broner don't move up the weight that is :) let Ricky focus on his next fight and put the Broner fight to rest for justnow please guys :)

Yes yes yes to the bolded bit! He also digs his feet into the canvas (obv for power) but I think it makes him immobile; he's a sucker for a half-step (to throw him off) then a double jab at the right time if you ask me. You can just see the little bastard make those mistakes & you think "You've just never met anyone handy enough to smack you when you do that mate", don't you?
Re: Looks like team burns bottled it
I've seen a lot of Broner, pretty much from his very early pro days, and in my humble opinion he has the potential to be a mega star. He's quicksilver, throws excellent combinations, has huge confidence, hit's firmly, is very cool under pressure, is a good judge of distance and has a malicious killer instinct. Honestly, he's nothing like Lacy, there is almost no comparison. His coolness, slickness and punch picking in the pocket is superb for someone of his experience.DavidPayne wrote:WBO Mandatory will likely be the Hungarian Lionel Blair.
But I'm being facetious
Burns is a very good belt holder, not seen enough of Broner to judge, but I suspect there is another version of Jeff Lacy going on here.
"He's black, he's American, he looks bigger than Ricky, ergo, he must be brilliant."
Burns is a very competent guy.
I think 2013 will be very interesting for him.
Interesting that Shaeffer should make this offer so publicly the same week he's trying to recruit British fighters, if media reports are accurate.
Look, I'm a huge Burns fan, he's had a number of proper world class wins against Katsidis, Martinez, Mitchell and Moses, is a legitimate two weight alphabet champion (as are Froch, Hatton, Khan, etc - no disgrace there) and is an excellent role model - he's a true credit to my country. However I just can't see past him getting smashed by Broner, I see no way for him to win.
With that in mind you've got to ask yourself what fighting Broner is worth? Burns could fight really good quality, world class fighters for the next 12 -24 months. Guys like Vasquez, De Marco, Abril, Rees, Bogere, Estrada and Gesta would all make excellent fights. He can still travel to the USA, have unification fights, make good money and be in world class fights. For me if he fights Broner he could find himself where De Marco is now - on the end of a shutout style beat down, potentially with years shaved off his career and staring at a rebuilding exercise and a period of poor earning. Full respect if he fights Broner, I'd love it to happen, but this is a man's living we are talking about. Burns might be looking at a choice of operating at world level for a few more years or being smashed into obscurity. How many guys come back and earn well after a tanking
PS - No disrespect to Burns here, I would give him an excellent shot of beating any other 135 operating at the moment. I just think Broner is going to be a career wrecker for a lot of fighters
Re: Looks like team burns bottled it
Totally agree with this post, burns will not win the fight and its very easy to throw someone to the lions as a fan. FW is way too shrewd to take this fight, not sure why any decent manager would.fizzjambo wrote:I've seen a lot of Broner, pretty much from his very early pro days, and in my humble opinion he has the potential to be a mega star. [quote="Trojans44"]Burns is not a credit to boxing if he refuses this fight. After an 8 week training camp he'll be in fighting shape. 8 weeks is surely plenty of time to get attuned to a big fight. If its not maybe he's not cut out for the top level.
Broner flatly does not need Burns and frankly Burns should be very grateful for a second opportunity for a career high payday. What you have nowadays are multiple champions and you have different levels which is daft
if you are calling yourself 'world champion' but that is the way it is. Burns is a good fighter but
he is a level below the cream of the division. Now - in this business - he can keep earning in the
UK, earning 100 grand a defence - a gift that keeps on giving - or he can go - like some Polish
cavalryman on a horse charging into a tank in the heat of battle - to America. lose his title and
then come back to what? It is a long way down. If he can defend against Walsh and then
take on Scott Harrison and then million dollar Crolla then good luck to him!
None of us
are paying his bills.

Fair enough. But it looks, feels, smells and sounds like Ricky Burns wants absolutely nothing to do with Broner.

Mate your so far out its laughableFat Git wrote:What you have nowadays are multiple champions and you have different levels which is daft
if you are calling yourself 'world champion' but that is the way it is.
If he can defend against Walsh and then
take on Scott Harrison and then million dollar Crolla then good luck to him!None of us
are paying his bills.
Re: Looks like team burns bottled it
Billy, 'Fat Git's' general point is right, there are different levels of 'World Champion'. You surely can't deny that?
Re: Looks like team burns bottled it
I'm assuming Billy is referring to the money - £100k a fight - as being way out and laughable?
