It's Froch's best performance but not the best fighter he's beaten, although Bute would be up there, but he probably wouldn't be in the top 50 for fighters beaten by British fighters.mickey1975 wrote:Was Bute bigger than Sugar Ray Robinson?mullenman wrote:froch destroying Bute was a good one in the last few years

Yep, Turpin, without a shadow of a doubt.
Kirkland Laing over Duran too, though Duran's lack of dedication had a great deal to do with that I'm sure. Even so, a great win on any fighter's record.

I bet on Carl at +115. He wasn't that big of a dog.mullenman wrote:froch destroying Bute was a good one in the last few years

And I haven't read the whole thread so forgive me if it's already been mentioned, but Berg beating Canzoneri & Chocolate has to be up there.
Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
Particularly as unlike some of the other names mentioned in this threat both were easy in their primes when he beat them.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:I bet on Carl at +115. He wasn't that big of a dog.mullenman wrote:froch destroying Bute was a good one in the last few years

Although Canzoneri avenged his defeat and both the Chocolate fights were close.
Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
Bit rich claiming Bob Fitzsimmons as a Brit. His family moved to New Zealand when he was about 9, he learned to box in Sydney and all of his fights were in Australia and the USA.

Which again is totally irrelevant to the question. Born in Helston, Cornwall until 9 is a full Brit. Doesn't matter if he was trained on the moon and lived in Timbuctoo. ( I live in Cornwall and he is A Brit ,Cornish down here!)Brute wrote:Bit rich claiming Bob Fitzsimmons as a Brit. It is a valid question with Bob Fitzsimmons. He left Britain, learned to box elsewhere, and never came back. Do we claim him as a Brit? I know we 'need' to cling to him, but really, was he a British fighter? In what way?
Same thing with Lewis. Left the UK early in life, learned to box elsewhere, fought for Canada in the Olympics twice, returned to the UK cynically (in my opinion) as a business decision because there was nothing at that time in Canada. Contemporaneous Lennox Lewis quote:
'I like Britain. I love Canada.'

Speaking as an American Fight fan, for whatever it's worth to you. I see Lennox Lewis a British Fighter. I'm aware of his having competed for Canada in the Olympics and also living in Jamaica for a time.Tuan_Jim wrote:It is a valid question with Bob Fitzsimmons. But he strikes me as a British citizen for the most part, for whatever that's worth to you.

Nothing wrong with that Mr G, he was always sold to you as such. We had wider more complete coverage of the man over here and, although I am a Lewis fan, there always seemed something very cynical about his 'Britishness'. Has lived abroad his whole life. Bitched about the cold weather when he boxed Bruno over here. As Bruno said, "What did he expect? Jamaican warmth?"gilgamesh wrote:Speaking as an American Fight fan, for whatever it's worth to you. It's an interesting discussion for we Brits who aren't frothing nationalists.

He was a Cornish boy, never a Cornish man. He never even returned to the UK to fight.Final round wrote:Born in Helston, Cornwall until 9 is a full Brit. Froch was a 'big' underdog? The odds were close to even.

Canzoneri would still be top 3 and Chocolate top 10.mickey1975 wrote:Read the OP, and then come back and apologise.mullenman wrote:mickey1975 wrote: Was Bute bigger than Sugar Ray Robinson?

In a sane world this would be four pages of posters saying SRR.
I've only glanced at the previous posts but I'm sure I've seen the names Bute and Lacy somehow mentioned in this topic.
Christ on a trike.

Seriously? Curry looked great for a while pre Honeyghan, but post that fight the wheels came off. He's more an example of never living up to his potential than anything else. It was a great win, but....handsofstone wrote:I thought Honeyghan,s win over Curry would come up as it is genuinely regarded as the best win for a british boxer but TBH as much as i know how good Curry was meant to be(p4p etc) i read a bit about boxing past and present and the only time i really see Curry,s name is in relation to Honeyghan,s win so why hasnt he got the adulation as such that other p4p greats have got :?? Lack of rivals?
80% plus of lists of all time P4P fighters seem to have Robinson top.
I don't think I've EVER seen one where he wasn't in the top 3, along with Ezzard Charles, Harry Greb, and sometimes people from before film.
On that basis, it's hard to argue that a Brit ever beat a better fighter than Sugar Ray Robinson. I for one don't think such a fighter ever lived.
Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
Randy Turpin beat the man widely regarded as the greatest boxer of all time.
Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
Well technically he is a British citizen but he wasn't raised here so it was kind of difficult for him to be accepted as such.gilgamesh wrote:Speaking as an American Fight fan, for whatever it's worth to you. Why are people talking about Fitzsimmons?
