I was trying to avoid comparing it to football, Jose Mourinho may spring to mind.

Just checking online out of curiosity, Manny Steward never boxed professionally, neither did Eddie Futch although both did fight as amateurs. I cant see any reference to Angelo Dundee ever having boxed.

That was only a 2 minute search, im sure the list would go on and on.

Billy would be better. Only option I see is Shane Mcguigan he has more modern training methods and feel he could maybe get a little more out of Ricky physically. I hoped that they brought someone else in to train Ricky and Billy was still involved as the main trainer. I hope Billy stays in the sport he has so much to give knowledge wise..
Physically isn't where Ricky needs to make changes, he's fit and strong already, he needs to change things technically to improve and get back to the top.
Ricky can always get fitter and stronger.. As for learning new things? Like what?? In order to do that you change a boxers style.. Ricky needs to learn to maximise the skills he has.. I believe Billy was very close to having Ricky at his best.. Can Ricky get better.. Yes definitely but who's the man to do that.. I see 2 options Shane Mcguigan or Virgil Hunter both will maximise different things for Ricky
The amount of effort required for minute improvements physically may not be worth it for Ricky, none of the problem's he's had recently have been to do with that, the only reason he beat Gonzalez was pure fitness, strength, heart and desire. All his problems have been technical ones, I'm not talking making huge changes, just slight tweaks to improve his game, like changing the stance slightly, because at the moment he looks like he struggles to get his feet in the right position to throw the left hook, so rotate the front foot inwards slightly so he can throw it more easily, more head movement coming forward and start to pivot more so he doesn't get caught on the ropes as much.

I wished Ricky all the best in the future and beleive he can still win a third world title at LW
Good luck with your boxers now Billy, and to Ricky as well. Its a shame you couldn't train him till the end of his career, but thats life i guess.
Was impressed with Simmons last time out against Graf, was a good scrap that one. Simmons proved a few things in that one, he took a few good shots in it.
Whens he out next? Some decent fights out there domestically for him.

Though to be fair being a boxing trainer and the manager of a premier (and champions) league football club are not similar jobs.

Really don't see what Sims could do for him, apart from that like you say he's Eddie's mate.

Only just heard this, I've become a big Ricky fan since being on this forum, I'm not shocked to hear the news as it's quite common for fighters to try new trainers after a loss (or blame a trainer) !
It will be interesting to see if Ricky fights any differently next time out.
As far as Billy is concerned, I have no doubt in my mind that he will take someone else under his wing and win a world title with them, even a northern English talent who bases himself up the road.
Good luck to both Ricky and Billy :TU:

I cant see Ricky being the type to blame anyone for his defeats,he has always stated he's not afraid of losing but sometimes in all walks of life you just need a change to stop you from going stale,it's maybe Burns issue rather than one he has with Billy and he may feel he needs a change but TBH Burns has always seemed to me to be a bit of a homebird and i'd be surprised if he went stateside,i'm pretty certain he won't go with another Scots trainer so i assume he'll go down south but Ricky best be prepared to fall down the pecking order if he wants one of the country's top trainers

If i'm honest although i wouldnt call Ricky washed up but i think he's had his day at world level and nothing can take away what he and Nelson achieved, people can say what they want about Billy but he's loyal to his stable and wont hear a bad word against them

Hope to see you on the Roger Nellie soon Billy :salut:

Good luck to Billy for the future. As others have said his loyalty to Ricky was unstinting and I respect that. Good to have a man like that on here and training Scotland's future champs.

[quote="daviddee"]Billy I think this will free up more of your time to focus on other fighters. Rightly Ricky was your main man. I think to improve he needs to go to the US and with someone like Virgil Hunter. I think Ricky's head was turned when he signed for Matchroom. I don't think you could ever find someone who will be as loyal than you were. I won't lie I think something needed to change but for the both of you. Stick too it I'm sure there is more chance of you training another World Champion than Ricky getting another belt.. Good luck to both of you[

Why Virgil Hunter? He's not done much for Angulo or Khan.

Certain trainers suit certain fighters, if Burns wants to make changes and tweak his approach then in my opinion he should get a coach like Adam Booth.

If he doesnt want to change too much in his style but just fancies a change of trainer then Gallaghers gym is an ideal place for him. Top quality sparring and Gallaghers fighters are all well conditioned.

Burns going with Sims seems like the strongest rumour . If Sims trains Mitchell (which im unsure of to be honest) then I think Burns is maing a mistake as Mitchell has got himself in a position where he could be fighting for a world title in the near future. If he wins a title then Burns could potentially have had a rematch against him to re-capture a belt but by sharing a head coach he is taking this possibility away from himself.

Bad move by Ricky, he should of stayed with Nelson and moved that 5 foot ten frame of his up to light welter and went after a 3rd world title in a new weight category, Ricky is a proper home bird and won't last 2 minutes in a fast city like London or a big country like America, I think burns will only go backwards with this move
Perhaps thats been the problem? How many top fighters go and lock themselves away for 12 week camps, ricky never has, really.

Results not been great one last crack with some changes - dont fix it if its not broken, but its not been working, time for a change
