While life is likely, a silicon based worm on a largish rock near Alpha Centauri or further afield for example. What interests me is that other life if any simply cannot see us. Lets take the size of the universe for example. Yup its quite big, wells its never ending, so take the size of us to the size of the universe. Maybe we a the minutest speck of dust in this whole vacuum of loneliness. Intelligent life will be out there but the most interesting question for me is, even if we saw it would we recognise it? We expect little grey or green men and they may well be out there but just look at our own planet. There are millions of species out there, some things you wouldn't even know were living from sight alone. Alien life could look like anything, it may not have arms, legs or even what we'd think of as a head and yet it could be millions of years more advanced than us.
On the other hand there could be life that looks and speaks exactly like us. In a few hundred years time it may be a case of Johnny Campbell from Planet Earth vs Zog Zoggy from Planet XYGH2345214 for the heavyweight championship of the universe. Held on the moon of course, that'd be interesting with zero gravity.D
The need for intelligence is essential in terms of natural selection, human beings did not become the most dominant race on earth due to being the biggest and srongest, it is due to our ability to manipulate our environment and make full use of available resources. I wonder if Aliens box? or have a white collar boxing scene? or have an alien boxing authority? I bet if they did have an alien heavyweight prospect he/it he would get better quality opposition than Joshua gets-unless Matchroom do the matchmaking for them as well?
We'll do the travelling either like they did it on the original Star Trek series, or else by wormholes. It seems likely that lifeforms in the universe are going to form along similar patterns, as there are certain precursors that have to be present for life to form (as far as we can tell of course) - gravity that is not too crushing, the presence of liquid water, a climate which is not too violent in it's extremes, and to be close, but not too close to a star. Given those conditions, there will of course be variance, but the patterns are likely to be familiar.
It seems very arrogant to assume that intelligence is anything more than a natural byproduct of evolution, and therefore it will be present on any planet which is able to support life long enough to allow evolutionary forces to develop long enough,

If they had spent centuries developing inter-stellar travel what interest would they have in visiting a planet full of primitive lifeforms?
