I'd guess for the same reason some people defend his honor like they were knights in his court; because both his believers and detractors would like to see him fight someone of worth to know who and what he is.

Wilder is the one that needs to grow a pair he's a "world champ" calling out a 20 year old prospect!
Exactly . . Hughie is barely better than Wawrzyk as an opponent right now.
Hughie would beat Wawrzyk easily.

Following his win over a 3-14 opponent Wawrzyk has moved from being out of the WBC's top 40 to 21st. He's still not top 15, but per WBC rules they can approve anyone with 2/3 of their board's support.
Duhaupas has also been mentioned, and while I still think he'd be a weak challenger (lost to Teper two fights ago and imo more of a good test for prospects like AJ and Parker) I prefer him to Hughie and Wawrzyk.

So he has to be top 15, unless he doesn't
Haymon fighters, Tarver, Cunningham and Spilzka are busy, Arreola looked poor, Brezeale and Washington are 25 and 36in WBC, so that pretty much leaves Wawrzyk unless he signs someone else

Why not someone who has a chance of winning like Carlos Takam, Bryant Jennings, Mariusz Wach or Lucas Browne? Lucas has been calling Wilder out on twitter.
Or Wilder could have gone right to his mandatory Povetkin instead of making him wait.

Duhaupas would probably be the 2nd best opponent of Wilder's career, as sad as that is.
