Positive news for Gennady Golovkin vs Billy Joe Saunders

A statement on Gennady Golovkin vs Billy Joe Saunders will be made next week


BILLY JOE SAUNDERS is not “moving on” from a Gennady Golovkin fight despite claims to the contrary on social media after a deadline he laid down expired yesterday.

Earlier this week Saunders made it clear that a fight with the unbeaten Kazakh needed to be signed by Friday, or else he would pursue other options. His promoter, allegedly, backed up this deadline to Boxing News.

Yesterday, Saunders tweeted a picture of a brief online conversation he had with Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler, a few weeks ago and insisted he is “moving on” after no major developments occured.

However, earlier today Warren confirmed to us via text message that they “haven’t moved on” and – interestingly – that they will be making a statement next week. While this is by no means confirmation that the fight is on, it is positive news after Saunders’ online comments.

It appears there was already an agreement of sorts in place for Golovkin-Saunders prior to Gennady’s points win over Danny Jacobs two weeks ago. Negotiations picked up pace after his victory in New York, though reports out of Kazakhstan claim that there have been issues in finalising the fight to coincide with the Expo 2017 taking place there in June.

The date mooted for the clash – which would create an undisputed middleweight champion – has been June 10 but as reported by Steve Kim of Boxing Scene earlier this week, Loeffler revealed there had been some “back-and-forth” with regards to securing a date.

After his win over Jacobs, Golovkin described a meeting with WBO champion Saunders as his “dream fight,” while Billy Joe has made his desire to fight the unified WBC, WBA and IBF supremo clear over the past few weeks, and is willing to travel to Kazakhstan for it.

Warren and Loeffler have been in frequent contact over the past couple of weeks, despite both being involved in big cards next weekend. Warren promotes a bumper card in Manchester on April 8 while Loeffler’s excellent cruiserweight, Oleksandr Usyk, fights in America on the same date.

I have an extremely hard time believing that. I think that a more logical outcome is GingerHead (win, lose, or draw) v Cotto II.

It's great risk-reward for GGG, and still one of the biggest money fights for Cotto. Roach (Cotto's trainer) has been vocal for a while about wanting the fight and claims that he and Miguel are on the same page about it. I think HBO approved a weak opponent for Cotto last fight with the agreement that it would be something big after that...

Yeah, I have seen the same footage. I still do not believe it until it is made. All wrong for Cotto. Possibly even life threatening. I just cannot see it.

Maybe they are on the 'GGG is really limited' train that is seemingly getting fuller these days?

Maybe. But wouldn't a rematch with GingerHead no matter the outcome tonight make more sense for the two of them?

He is that dude. I was calling for his retirement after Cheato and Pac. He certainly does not listen to me.

I'd also think that tonight's loser will probably be less likely than the winner to be back up and ready for a December 2nd date.

I think tonight's winner will be hard pressed for that, unless someone catches the other cold early.

It will certainly be a tight turnaround if it happens. I'm skeptical of it too, although Rafael does have credibility for that type of news.

Id like this fight now. A GGG-Canelo rematch feels dirty and unfair to me, though that's where the money is.

The thought of Saunders fighting at a pace like that is hilarious. He will be levelled by either of them.

GGG/Canelo by decapitation. And then he and his son can go and sit on a naughty step somewhere.
