Magri was in some terrific fights vs international competition. Was he in any domestic crackers?

As a kid, I was captivated by the Minter/Finnegan trilogy ........ I think it was the start of my love for Boxing.

Charlie won the British flyweight title in just his third pro fight (still a record), flooring Eltham's brave Dave Smith several times before referee Roland Dakin had seen enough. He never defended the title because he was obviously too good for the meagre number of flyweights in Britain in the late 1970s and early 1980s, although he held on to it until 1982 when Kelvin Smart stopped fellow Welshman Dave George for the vacant title. From memory (I can't be bothered to check), he never fought a British opponent from the time he stopped Smith in 1977 to the time he faced Croydon's Duke McKenzie in 1986. Again from memory, McKenzie is the only European fighter ever to beat him. Magri, with some justification, thought he was going to walk right through McKenzie.
Charlie was awarded a Lonsdale Belt outright by the Board after he retired, a nice gesture for one of the greatest flyweights this country has ever produced.

Finnegan definitely won the second but didn't get it in the days of sole arbiters (the ref). Marvin Hagler says that Kevin gave him his hardest ever fight when they met in Boston in the 1970s (they fought twice but the first one was a war).

Macklin v Moore was great. I loved the build up and the action of Enzo Mac v Haye, Buckland v Rees (particularly their first) was also very good.
What was that Graham Earl one as well when Micky Vann ignored the towel? That was exciting.

Edit....it was Katsidis the aussie wasnt it, so doesnt count.

Michael Brodie v Neil Swain. 10 rounds of back and forth action, culminating in a highlight reel one punch KO.

Think Clinton McKenzie's many wars deserve a mention. 2 against Colin Powers, 2 against Des Morrison, another with Sylvester Mittee.

Moore-Macklin will always have a place in my heart as I spent a lot of time with both of them during the build-up. One of Moore's mates got me in a headlock in the gym to find out if I was a spy. Billy Graham asked me if I had seen anything new from Jamie in sparring, I said I hadn't seen him for months and he shouted: "You were there all day yesterday, you c**t. Big Al told me". One of Macklin's fans lived on my back throughout the fight, alternating between shouting, crying, and apologising for almost crippling me. Then I watched it back again on the Monday with Moore and a shitload of biscuits. The choice of venue was also great move by Steve Wood.

Thinking back, there were a few crackers at the George Carnall Leisure Centre. Chris P Bacon against Tony Moran and Amer Khan against Tony Stubbs were both bonkers fights. The Khan one was one of those Sunday afternoon shows that seems to have died out completely.

I enjoyed Andries v Sibson, not exaclty a barn burner but just a solid honest fight.

Mark Prince v Micheal Gale for the british lightheavy crown was a good scrap, I was a stablemate of Gales at the time and really thought he had it in the bag until he walked onto a monster shot by Prince.

Yeah that was a huge shot to end it, he was probably about one or two punches from being blown away himself too, a sustained stiff breeze could probably have knocked him over.

I remember Dean Francis having a couple of entertaining fights around that period, the Baker one in particular.

Darren Dorrington and Jason Matthews was good.

I'll have to dig some of the old yearbooks out.

Ayers/Rigby I/II were good, Brown/Cherifi, Gallagher/Shepherd

Yes the both fights were at Everton park,second one was so one sided from the first,McKeever was just too good for Mullholland.

Yes the both fights were at Everton park,second one was so one sided from the first,McKeever was just too good for Mullholland.

Yeah, I was at the first fight! Ending was wild.

Buckland v Rees was that the one where they both got a medical suspension after the fight because of the intensity of the bout?

I'm going with Kevin Lueshing vs Chris Saunders 2.
