It was competitive until the 3rd round. After that Ruiz was taking his time to set up the next opportunity. Joshua was gassed. Ruiz fought a smart fight from 4 thru 7. Others would have rushed it too much

Can I also give a shout out to Ruthless RKO who stated "Genuinely think Ruiz will get the knockout" on the fight thread.

Seems he isn't given to claiming credit so I'll do it on his behalf. You were first though AC so much respect to you too :salut:

Ruiz had a terrific game plan and stuck to it. That's why he was so patient, waiting for AJ to open up rather than press him in rounds 4 - 6. AJ will have to consider moving forward. You can't teach chin, and he's not smooth enough to re-learn fighting from the outside with a jab, and not powerful enough to do that and load up on the right when the opportunity arises (Klitchko like).

AJ might win the rematch but Ruiz is a serious proposition for anyone, and he will always be a potential nightmare for AJ. in particular.

It seems so obvious in hindsight doesn't it?

Yup. I love the lesson in this. Looking forward to the powers scrambling to get the big fights matched. :yay:

I was stunned when I heard the odds were 20-1 against Ruiz. I can't believe everyone gave him so little chance, and compared the fight to Buster Douglas vs. Tyson. How ridiculous. AJ doesn't come close to the aura of invincibility Tyson had.

I didn't think Ruiz would win but expected the odds would be 3-1 to 5-1 or so. As everyone should have known before the fight, Ruiz hits hard--as hard as Joshua--and takes a punch as well as Joshua, and is a skilled boxer, not just a brawler. The main thing against him is physique and height, and he's not really that short. I saw these two as basically the same overall skill level, but Joshua having a clear reach advantage, and winning behind that advantage. I was pretty sure Joshua would win but I never would have put Ruiz at 20-1 against, that's insane.

If I'd have been in Vegas, I would have thrown some money away on Ruiz, knowing he was probably going to lose but seeing it as a good risk/reward. These crazy odds outliers don't come along very often, too bad I missed it.

ruiz couldnt stop or drop liakhovichs corpse and didnt put a dent in kj (look what aj did), couldnt drop chinny dimmy either whod been down loads. nothing to suggest he hit as hard b4 hand, him being able to hurt aj so easily really didnt have much past form

Douglas at the top of his game would have boxed Ruiz silly.

But Buster was seldom motivated so I'd wager a bob on the new champion.

AR will have a long list of fighters who feel they can take those belts away .
some may have the skill but most will not so I wouldnt be surprised if he is champ for a while .

That said apart from AJ he hasnt fought anyone of any note so has been under the radar a bit until this fight .

Over the time it would look even more hilarious that a chubby-short guy like Ruiz put on a boxing clinic on an undefeated, apparently unstoppable, high profile, tall-rangy with a super-physique boxer like Joshua. :oo

RKO has a special place in this forum :TU: - we need a final eliminator between Creed & RKO to settle this for the vacant P4P prediction strap !

He was expected to flush this guy outside in 4 rounds. He was fighting a week after Wilder dismantled Breazeale and it was his US debut.

He was 100% supposed to completely destroy this guy in quick fashion, and basically say 'you're move Wilder'.

This did not happen. It was a terrible night for Joshua, and we all await the rematch with baited breath.

I'm a bit sad to read about all this hindsight about the outcome of this Ruiz victory over Joshua.

Yes Ruiz produced a fantastic display to dismantle the heavyweight divisions number one. There's certainly not much to be desired about Joshua's performance either, and I think there were certainly remnants of the Povetkin performance which demonstrated there are certainly flaws in the Joshua game.

I am in particularly shocked that everyone thinks all of a sudden Andy Ruiz Jr is a world beater or has ATG power. As with any shock, we will not know until it has been backed up. But to suggest that Ruiz has bone crunching power is absurd, as his below average knockout ratio (against very mediocre opposition) suggests.

I would love to know what Apollo's predictions for Joshua's 5 fights previous to this one. Predicted all Joshua wins, then looked at Ruiz and thought 'yep, this is the guy'?.

Prior to this fight, Ruiz was a relatively inactive, uninteresting fighter to the division, with a rotund figure, below average resume and bang average power. His only ever fight of any kind of note was (in my opinion) a winning performance against Joseph Parker, although it was hardly any demonstration that he was destined for great things.

Just about everyone thought Joshua would win. And win easily.

People didn't want to hear that Joshua had flaws but in any case maybe a handful of posters maximum thought Ruiz would be the man to expose them. For the record I wasn't one of them, I thought it would be relatively straightforward
