Manuel Charr Awaits Travel Visa For Scheduled Jan. 29 Title Fight Versus Trevor Bryan
Only a travel visa stands in the way of a heavyweight pairing more than two years in the making.
Manuel Charr is on target to make the first defense of his secondary WBA heavyweight belt, as he is due to face interim WBA titlist Trevor Bryan in a long-overdue title consolidation match. The fight is tentatively scheduled to take place January 29 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, marking the first event with Hall of Fame promoter Don King as the lead since August 2015.
Representatives from the Florida State Boxing Commission have confirmed to BS.com that the proper steps have been taken in order to proceed with the event. However, it’s also worth noting that Don King Productions has been down this road several times before in the past few years—including with this very fight—only for such shows to never see the light of day.
One major hurdle to overcome is having Charr arrive to the United States in time for the fight to take place within the WBA-imposed deadline. The 36-year old Lebanon-born heavyweight is now based out of Cologne, Germany where he awaits word on a travel visa.
Erol Ceylan, Charr’s promoter has otherwise indicated to BS.com that their side is ready to go. Of course, there is also concern about traveling to the U.S. during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Germany remains in lockdown through January 31, although there is a workaround extended to parties deemed “essential personnel”—a status which has been regularly afforded to world-class athletes.
Charr’s current position as a reigning titlist would—theoretically—qualify under such circumstances. That said, the 16-year ring pro is running short on available time to make the trip abroad.
Charr has not fought since a 12-round decision over Alexander Ustinov to win the vacant title in Nov. 2017.
Several postponements and cancellations have since come of his bizarre reign, including a planned September 2018 fight with Fres Oquendo which nearly cost him the title outside the ring. Charr tested positive for two separate banned substances, resulting in the fight being canceled and Charr initially stripped of his title in November 2018.
A successful appeal filed with the WBA helped restore his title reign in January 2019. Charr requested his “B” sample to be tested, only to later successfully argue that neither he nor any member of his team were properly notified of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited lab conducting such tests.
WADA rules state that the athlete has the right to be notified of “the scheduled date, time and place for the B-Sample analysis...” “Doping Control”, Part 1, section 7.3. They also provide that an athlete must be provided notice of “the opportunity for the Athlete and/or the Athlete’s representative to attend the B Sample opening and analysis.”
According to the final resolution offered by the WBA, the “B” sample was opened and tested without proper notification offered to Charr, who also provided proof of a clean drug test as contracted through Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) on Sept. 29th, 2018—the date of the scheduled fight. Due to the time lapse in testing between the “A” and “B” samples, the WBA begrudgingly reinstated Charr as its secondary titleholder.
In that time, the sanctioning body greenlighted an interim title fight between Bryan (20-0, 14 KOs) and BJ Flores in August 2018. Bryan—an unbeaten 31-year old heavyweight from Schenectady, New York who is promoted by King—won the fight by 4th round knockout, but has spent more than two years waiting on his next ring assignment.
King won a purse bid for the fight last March, submitting a whopping bid of $2,000,000. The plans at the time called for the bout to take place no later than May 30, 2020. The ongoing pandemic shut down the sport and most of the world, providing leeway to reschedule the fight.
Typical of past behavior, too much time was taken by King, prompting the WBA to once again take the lead. A new deadline was offered, with the fight required to take place no later than January 29th, 2021, along with mandatory random drug testing administered. BS.com has learned that steps have been for both boxers to be subject to random drug testing through Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA).
Anthony Joshua (24-1, 22 KOs) remains the recognized WBA heavyweight champion, having regained that belt along with the IBF/WBO/IBO titles following a 12-round win over Andy Ruiz in their Dec. 2019 rematch. England’s Joshua has since defended his unified titles in a 9th round knockout of Kubrat Pulev last December at SSE Arena, Wembley.
Current plans call for the hulking Brit to next face lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs), with negotiations underway for such a superfight. In a world where rules are followed, the winner of Charr-Bryan would become a mandatory challenger to the full recognized version of the WBA title.
For now, it’s safe to say that all parties involved will merely settle for this secondary title fight to actually see the light of day.

Presumably whatever is left of Bermane Stiverne will easily destroy Chris Lovejoy. Although Lovejoy claims to know nothing about the fight and that Don King is just using his name to sell tickets. Really?

Stiverne should beat Lovejoy with ease, unless he hasn't been to the gym since Covid hit.
I don't expect much from Bryan but he should beat Charr if he has any ability of note.
Ronald Johnson is also scheduled to be on the card. I wonder if they'll get another past it heavy or one with a very padded record to face him to complete the main event trifecta.

As part of King’s bid. He has requested the split be changed from 75-25 to 55-45, so Bryan, who he promotes, can make a bigger payday.

I know exactly what Charr brings to the table. He is always in good shape (PEDS???) but I have no idea what kind of shape Bryan will be in. I have seen 3 of Bryan's fights. One against a trialhorse & the other 2 vs Flores & Derric Rossy. At the time of the Rossy fight Derric was a solid C level journeymen who was always a good measuring stick for fighters on the rise. Bryan dropped him & won a wide UD. Bryan looked like a HW to watch back then & it has now been 5 years since that fight. A blownup CW & expired B.J Flores has been his best win since. Nobody really knows how good he truly is. This is a 50/50 fight but if Bryan is in good shape I would actually have to favour him just from what I saw in the Flores & Rossy fights. Maybe I am reaching there as I have seen a lot of Manuel Charr fights but who is his best win? Ustinov at 41 years of age or Kevin Johnson? Alex Leapai or a washed up Michael Grant? Charr has 35 fights & 203 rounds of experience but his resume is not really filled with any wins that stick out at me. Vitali Klitschko cherry picked him for his last fight before retiring & he lost a MD to Duhaupas (Duhaupas had only a few weeks notice after a close decision loss to Teper)& got KO's by Povetkin & CW champion Breidis. I like the Diamond boy but I think he is a C+ level gatekeeper level fighter at best. Beats all the usual journeymen but would be hard pressed to beat anyone above that level. I actually want to see this fight to get this ongoing secondary title saga finally done with. Unless Fres Oquendo still is owed a shot. Don KIng would have his hands on the WBA Mandatory position if Bryan were to win. I never did understand why KIng never held a few in house fights featuring Bryan against Stiverne, Molina or De Mori (While he was still under his banner)who were all in his stable.

The bout is tentatively scheduled to take place January 29th, which just so happens to be the deadline imposed by the sanctioning body in order for King to retain promotional rights to the fight.
The Florida State Boxing Commission previously confirmed that a request has been submitted to promote an event at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. A request has been placed for the bout to carry random drug testing through Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency, a mandated requirement per a WBA ruling from the previous purse bid hearing last March. However, the event has yet to evolve beyond paperwork submitted, with the clock ticking and things not looking good for the Hall of Fame promoter who has fallen back into old habits.
“We are hearing rumors that the fight is not booked,” Erol Ceylan, Charr’s promoter told BS.com. “Hard Rock Hotel has no reservation for that date for an event without an audience. [Unbeaten heavyweight Christopher] Lovejoy [claims to] not know that he’s fighting [former heavyweight titlist Bermane] Stiverne.
“We take this fight very serious and try to make sure everything is done professionally in order for us to fight in [the greater Miami area]. I never do business the way they are doing things because nothing looks serious.”
Charr (31-4, 17 KOs) has not fought since Nov. 2017, when the Germany-based Syrian heavyweight outboxed Alexander Ustinov to win his secondary WBA heavyweight title. The extended title reign has yet to include a successful title defense, though complete with plenty of delays and scandals. Charr tested positive for two separate banned substances surrounding an eventually canceled Sept. 2018 title fight with Fres Oquendo, the infraction for which he initially stripped of his title in November 2018.
A testing loophole involving the opening of his “B” sample allowed for the restoration of Charr’s title reign, though on the condition that he submit to mandatory random drug testing. Don King tries to force me to sign with him, which I definitely won't do! I have a boxing promoter myself: Erol Ceylan. We have already put our lawyers on all points. Don King won't get away like this! No matter what happens: I'm 200% fit and ready to fight. The title stays with us in Germany. I filled out all of the WBA's forms, adhered to the legal guidelines and signed all of the WBA's contracts several times.
“I also signed the DKP contract under protest! The game with Don King has been going on for two years. We boxers are neither promoters nor organizers. I would like to defend my title every three months! It's all up to Don King that I haven't been able to fight for two years. God is the greatest he will give me the power and passion!! I will be ready for you and every challenge.”
Charr remains in Germany without a returned signed contract or any indication of a travel visa in place to bring him abroad. King has yet to submit deposits to secure the venue or drug testing, with the alleged event now less than three weeks away.
Even with the fight freeing up should King once again default, it still means further delays in the careers of at least two fighters if not everyone reportedly due to fight on the card. Among those stuck in the holding pattern are inactive cruiserweight titlist Beibut Shumenov (18-2, 12KOs) and scheduled challenger Raphael Murphy (14-1, 11KOs). Shumenov has not fought since claiming the WBA title in a 9th round knockout of Hizni Altunkaya in July 2018.
Charr remains the bearer of the longest inactive streak of anyone on the alleged show, though he and his team are prepared to take matters into their own hands.
“I await from partner to give us information that we can promote also the event. We don’t know the broadcaster, we cannot help to sell tv rights [in Germany],” notes Ceylan. “Also, which gloves will be used by us and by Bryan? So many things have to be organized to be sure that the fight happens.

No one besides diehard fans know who they are. And us diehard fans aren't that interested.
I'd watch if it was on espn, dazn or fox.
But I'm not paying anything more than my traditional streaming service for it

Its cheaper for king to pretend they will fight.
When hes sued he can point to this as his defense. The settlement and lawyer fees will be less than the 2 million hes on the hook for here.

While the card will not be open to a live audience, King will present two world title fights--one for the WBA 'regular' heavyweight championship and the other for the WBA 'regular' cruiserweight championship plus three other classic fights of the past on Don King TV live streamed worldwide for $19.95 (www.donking.com).
Both fighters have gone through VADA testing.
“I’ve won the purse bid and the WBA is mandating that this fight take place by Jan. 29th and that is when we are having this boxing card in a bubble at the Hard Rock,” said King.
Prior to the main event, Beibut Shumenov (18-2, 12 KOs), the WBA 'regular' cruiserweight champion from Las Vegas via Kazakhstan, will defend his world title against Raphael Murphy (14-1, 11 KOs) from Harlington, TX in a 12-round bout.
Also on the card, a heavyweight fight featuring former WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne (25-4-1, 21 KOs) from Las Vegas, NV via Canada
