I remember once before a fight in Basildon, I had some idiot telling me about his amateur career. Apparently he had boxed Kirkland Laing twice, he never laid a glove on him untill he knocked him cold each time with one shot in the last round!

Saying that Georgie Smith was fighting on the same show, he was hugely hyped by Hearns, but then that was Hearns way, same for the Delaney brothers.

Yep, all the of these already mentioned below fit the bill :

Matthew Ellis
Roman Greenberg
Shafiq Khalid
Steve Barnes

Ellis and Greenberg could at least look special at times but should have stayed career amateurs.

Barnes and Khalid were absolutely awful (measured against the hype). Brendan Ingle was often guilty of wild hyperbole and also getting it completely wrong sometimes.

Remember Brendan used to absolutely rave about Daniel Teasdale from when he was a youngster, saying he was going to be the best to ever come out of the gym and would eclipse Naz‘s achievements? Poor kid only had 5 pro fights in the end, losing 1 along the way.

I didn't know Ricky Grover used to box. I saw him years ago doing stand up comedy at Up The Creek in Greenwich and he was by far the funniest comedian on the line up.


Yes, Daniel Teasdale was another one of Brendan Ingle's big errors in judgement.

Christ some of you are harsh. Some poor fellas just chasing their dreams, putting food on the table and all that.

Some of these fighters getting mentioned were bad, most of them had a combination of bad luck and bad decisions.

I watched a bit of Fury vs Cunningham the other day and he looks nothing like the fighter he’d become, and I remember the early David Price fights. I actually think you sound less clued up saying you picked Fury at the time

Bennie May and Charlie Rumbol too, I think both turned over too young despite being excellent amateurs, I think they both went down the wrong path after too

It's a tough one because boxing is a business and hyping fighters up is part and parcel of the game, but you're right - it isn't fair to the fighters because they have to carry these ridiculous hype tags - sometimes for the rest of their lives.

How many fighters anyway become a Muhammad Ali or even a Naseem Hamed - hardly any if you think of how many people take up boxing and become boxers - obviously the hyping of many of these fighters are ridiculous - like Coco said, they're still good fighters but it is one of those things where we blame the game, not the players or the people paying the money to keep this sport afloat.

I saw a documentary about fat people, forget what it was called. He was on there doing the pads and bagwork. It wad obv he knew what he was doing and I remember thinking christ hes got fast hands for a big man. I think his dad was a pro fighter before he ran out on the family.

He did okay at the Stuey Hall/really EBU level but make believe world class level, but didn't win a round vs Tete or Roddy, got dropped like 4 times, and literally shat himself. I suppose he still showed a good level, but well off being what I'd consider special

Scott Dann never got hyped! If anything he suffered the fate of most boxers who aren't from a hotbed like London, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield, and flew under the radar for the vast majority of his career.
