i know its true, but putting it like that makes it seem like some glamorous batty boy just stepped out of the crowd and iced him

I hadn't realised he'd done that....OK a bit more understandable but he was featured so much on TV (when it was rare) and so overhyped it was out of place. Even as a kid, who was naive about boxing, I'd look at him and think he looked pretty average. I liked Tony though I remember him wearing pink shorts and getting stopped by a yank journey man....as I remember he started complaining heartily even though he was gone.... might have slightly 'misremembered' the pink shorts in that fight...but he def wore them in some fight I'm certain.

There was a rumour he got knocked out by a Welsh rugby league player for pushing to the front of the queue in a St Helens kebab shop, Carlos prob knows the whole story.
Yeah, Stuart Evans chinned him. That was one back for rugby because Colin Jones had chinned Richard Moriarty some years earlier. I've never heard anything good said about Stretch but he was a dynamite light-middleweight, really special. As soon as he moved up to middleweight, he lost something and was out of the game by the age of 24. Pat Barrett was the same when he moved from light-welterweight to welterweight.
Just looking at the clip again when Stretch chins Collins in the NABC's, and Collins turns southpaw in a stupid attempt to taunt southpaw Stretch and gets nailed.

Weird thing about Collins Stretch fight is that George doesn't even look like George..... Collins was always rellay swarthy with a jet black Errol Flynn tache,, yet his hair is sandy blonde there. Still don't get why an experienced Warren, and the boxing community thought that Collins would be great. Beating up actual kids when you're a grown man (rumoured 2 years older) then getting completely (Gary) Stretched in about d is hardly the stuff of future legends......
Knocking out Stretch was attributed to a few of the players, Richard Webster was regularly put up for it too! I had heard it was Evans too, he had actually come down the boxing gym for a part of Neaths pre season training in about 1995/6. If it was him he must have got lucky as he really couldn't punch his way out of a paper bag! Getting him in a headlock or something would have been an entirely different thing!

I know the story about Jones and Moriarty. The rugby player was a giant of a man and proper punchy with a few beers down him.
He probably saw Jones as a feather in his cap and fancied his chances as Colin is a small guy.
Anyway Moriarty barged into Jones wife on the stairs of the Top Rank nightclub in Swansea, words were exchanged and the rugby player tried to chin the boxer. Jones just beat him to the punch and knocked him cold sprawled all over the stairs! He was out cold for a good few minutes.

He’s a tidy boxer but I worry his lack of punch power/strength will hold him back. The Italian last night was a good learning fight for him but he needs to sit down more on his punches.
I don’t know whether Dave Caldwell is the right trainer for him. Haven’t seen much improvement really.

He won a ton of schoolboy and junior titles and then turned pro with Terry Lawless at 18 and burned out quickly, although at least Batten won the British title (and a Lonsdale Belt outright).

Thanks for that bennie that’s exactly what I thought, but online there were articles saying he won the senior ABAs in 1984!!!? People say he lied about his age, and was 2 years older. If so he’s a lowlife beating up kids as a near adult. Again this is unconfirmed but he def drove up to one of his junior titles with a tache and legs hairier than a gorilla..::

Gavin was a beautiful boxer, but had that teenaged body. Never seemed to grow into a man. I thought that would hinder him as a pro. Could’ve done with a strength and nutrition coach. He was a little scummer by some accounts so never really liked him
