Bournemouth is a working class place?
Where would they be able to have a show down there? I guess they’d need somewhere big enough for c.6,000 for the bigger promoters.583940 wrote: ↑29 Jan 2022, 21:30 Southampton/Portsmouth area (& nearby Bournemouth )
Very working class places. Feel and look more like Northern cities than the other south coast towns.
A lot of talent around there - Chris Billam-Smith, Michael Mckinson, Joe Pigford, Ryan Garner, Mark Chamberlain, Lewis Edmondson, Ebonie Jones, Royston Barney-Smith
I think if a Hearn or Warren or whoever put on a show there it'd sell well. But for some reason they never do.
I've been a few times, a really nice place, done some security jobs there too, a real walk in the park.mickey1975 wrote: ↑30 Jan 2022, 07:06I've no idea, but I understand you get that perception here as well. We have some crap areas, they just don't put them in the tourist brochure.
I've been to Portsmouth, working, that did have some shitholes.Coco wrote: ↑30 Jan 2022, 07:11I've been a few times, a really nice place, done some security jobs there too, a real walk in the park.mickey1975 wrote: ↑30 Jan 2022, 07:06I've no idea, but I understand you get that perception here as well. I guess the poor folk have to live in Southhampton!
Definitely does lol. It's the 2nd most densely populated place in the Uk after London.mickey1975 wrote: ↑30 Jan 2022, 07:16I've been to Portsmouth, working, that did have some shitholes.Coco wrote: ↑30 Jan 2022, 07:11I've been a few times, a really nice place, done some security jobs there too, a real walk in the park.mickey1975 wrote: ↑30 Jan 2022, 07:06

That's interesting to learn. Is there a bit more crossover between the amateurs and white collars up north these days? I remember seeing Billy at All Saints when he was turning over (nearly twenty years ago) and such things didn't exist then..
It's a very mixed bag. Some opponents are woeful. Really bad. Then you have some ex pros having a final go who could really hurt someone. Some ex schoolboy amateurs who can't be arsed to go through the medicals, etc to box am. I must say, though, one of the best fights I've ever seen live was Michael Fafera v Mark Holmes, over five rounds. Brilliant in the championship rounds! And Mikey turned over after that and has never fought am in his life.dookus wrote: ↑30 Jan 2022, 12:01That's interesting to learn. Blackpool is a good shout, Sharpstyle ABC is a top notch amateur gym there that has produced a lot of national champions, have always been impressed with their lads when have seen them out. Re: Burnley. Blackburn, Oldham, Rochdale - a lot of those old mill towns have a huge muay thai scene, lots of clubs and loads of decent fighters.peter barlow wrote: ↑05 Nov 2021, 11:15 If we're to go off the theory that deprived areas produce more boxers then in England you'd expect there is untapped potential talent in areas like Blackpool and Middlesbrough. Also Burnley, Blackburn, Bradford.
Is there much happening in these areas? Brian Rose from Blackpool still on the go.
There is Team Greaves ABC in Oldham, just off the M60.583940 wrote: ↑02 Feb 2022, 13:17 Salford is another place there should be more boxing clubs in. Very working class city full of high crime areas, poverty, angry youths who like a fight. They just need something to do constructive with their time. To my knowledge theres only 2 boxing clubs there in a city of 300,000 people.
There's been Jamie Moore, Stephen Foster and a Stephen Foster Jr and a few others. Marc Leach currently. But you'd think there there should have been more. I really think this could be a good breeding ground for fighters.
Jamie Moore has just opened up one - Walkden ABC and I think it'll do well there.. It's near the notorious Little Hulton.

Most of Home Counties are pretty poor other than for the travellers.high tower 1 wrote: ↑02 Feb 2022, 15:49 Where would be the worst areas for boxing ??? I’d say Surrey must be shite apart from gypsys.
That’s a really good point about that concentration of Muay Thai gyms, it’s been the case since at least the 90s probably 80s. That lad who was a bit of a pioneer, god can’t remember his name. Had an ‘interesting’ hair cut, he was from round that way I’m sure. Rochdale rings a bell. Still can’t remember his name thoughManchester Massive wrote: ↑01 Feb 2022, 05:54Blackpool is a good shout, Sharpstyle ABC is a top notch amateur gym there that has produced a lot of national champions, have always been impressed with their lads when have seen them out. Thanks mate. He did have an interesting’ haircut, didn’t he?
Croydon’s a rough shit hole so I’d be surprised if it didn’t churn out good fighters.Coco wrote: ↑02 Feb 2022, 17:36Most of Home Counties are pretty poor other than for the travellers.high tower 1 wrote: ↑02 Feb 2022, 15:49 Where would be the worst areas for boxing ??? These days places around Croydon which is still a London borough and in the London divs has a Surrey postcode and are producing plenty.
