Jermall Charlo stripped of WBC middleweight title after latest run-in with the law

The career of undefeated American Jermall Charlo 33-0 (22) is on the rocks after his latest arrest.

The 33-year-old from Houston, Texas reportedly crashed him Lamborghini into another car in his hometown early on Tuesday evening, according to TMZ.

Charlo left the scene and was arrested short distance away. Police on the scene administered a sobriety test, which Charlo reportedly failed.

He faces three misdemeanor charges: DWI with a BAC of greater than 0.15, fleeing a police officer and leaving the scene of a crash involving $200 of damage or more.

The run-in with the law comes almost six months after Charlo’s last fight, a 10-round unanimous decision win over Jose Benavidez Jr 28-3-1 (19) in a non-title bout In November. Charlo weighed in at 166 1/2 pounds for the fight, five pounds heavier than former welterweight world title challenger Benavidez.

That fight was Charlo’s first in two-and-a-half years after mental health issues kept him sidelined. Mexican sanctioning body the WBC supported him through this period, allowing him to retain his world title belt while simultaneously sanctioning an interim world title bout between Carlos Adames 23-1 (18) and Juan Macias Montiel 23-6-2 (23) in October 2022.

Dominican Adames, 30, won that bout by third round knockout. He successfully defended the secondary strap against Julian Williams 29-4-1 (17) via ninth-round stoppage last June.

Charlo’s arrest is the last straw for the WBC, who have been unusually patient in the circumstances.

“The WBC has provided and will continue to do as much as possible to support Jermall Charlo during his difficult times with regards to Mental Wellness,” the WBC said in a statement today.

“The WBC Board of Governors has decided to confirm Carlos Adames as the WBC reigning middleweight champion as he is being elevated from interim champion to WBC World Champion.

“The WBC will closely work with PBC in securing the best course of action to attend to Jermall needs at this moment in time.

“After a thorough evaluation of the situation and understanding of the facts and times the WBC may rank Jermall in Super Middle weight.

“Carlos Adames has been exemplarily supportive of every action taken by the WBC in support of his fellow peer throughout this time. Congratulations.”

Just last week Charlo was talking about facing undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez 61-2-2 (29) in September.

The 33-year-old Mexican superstar defeated Charlo’s twin brother, former undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo 35-2-1 (19), by unanimous decision in September last year.

“I’mma fight Canelo… I’mma get my brother revenge in September,” Charlo said in a live social media stream.

“I’m going to get the revenge. I’m not enjoying this… no more. The money ain’t the issue. I got a birthday coming in a couple of days. I did enough. I made history. Dealing with all kinds of cases of [being] bipolar, being by yourself, thinking that you shutting the world out is gonna help you.

“But you need to be able to speak to someone and help you get past whatever you’re going through. It just feels like everybody is against you. I don’t care if you’re in the Uber, a cab, wherever, everybody is just against you.

“I couldn’t tell that some people weren’t against me. It was just that at the moment it’s the way you’re feeling and I turned my back against pretty much the world. I just had to start getting help with it and it made me a lot better.”

Jermall Charlo hit with DWI charge after crashing Lamborghini

Jermall Charlo has been given a charge of driving whilst intoxicated after a crash in Texas in May 2024 when he was suspected of being drunk.

The 34 year old crashed his Lamborghini and struck another driver – and, reported TMZ, also received a misdemeanour charge for leaving the scene of an accident, according to court documents dated August 20.

The same publication reports that the incident took place on May 6 on Brazoria County roadway, and that law enforcement said that Charlo had a verbal argument with the other driver before fleeing. He is said to have been tracked down by police who took his blood and found an alcohol content of .15 – almost twice the limit for the state of Texas.

The same police officers said that he looked intoxicated when he was being questioned. Their catching up with him followed their attempts to get him to pull over via the use of their blue lights and sirens, but him stopping only when other cars boxed him in a mile from the scene of the crash.

“Jermall has been in training,” said Charlo’s attorney Kent Schaffer at the time. “He has not been using any type of drugs.

“We are optimistic that there will be a good solution.”

No way he's gonna fight for any belt after his inactivity and no way Canelo will even fight him.

He needs to have a fight and get ranked again.

Why not just have a simple 6 round fight even. I mean, he's been out so long, no one would say anything about that.

Agree but I think he is banking on his 0, so maybe he is waiting for Canelo's call. Selling his 0 to Canelo would be good business. I don't think he cares too much about rankings or belts at this stage. Its all about $$$.
Also I don't see Canelo moving @ 175. He'll be comfortable to milk the game @168 vs less dangerous opponents until he retires.

Canelo is on that easy money route until he retires. I'd expect him to fight Jake Paul, Eubank Jr and Mall.

Official: Jermall Charlo returning on May 31 PBC card

Former middleweight champion – and still unbeaten – Jermall Charlo is scheduled to return to the ring in a super middleweight bout May 31 in a Premier Boxing Champions on Prime Video card, an individual connected to the negotiations told BS Wednesday.

The individual was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter because Charlo’s opponent and the card has yet to be finalized, although BS reported earlier this week that Charlo rival and former IBF super-middleweight champion Caleb Plant is expected to headline the card in a separate bout. Plant, 23-2 (14 KOs), is the WBA interim super-middleweight champion.

The card is expected to land in Las Vegas.

The 34-year-old Charlo, 33-0 (22 KOs), hasn’t fought since his November 25, 2023, unanimous-decision, non-title victory over Jose Benavidez Jnr in Las Vegas.

He was stripped of his WBC middleweight belt in May, one day after his arrest in Pearland, Texas, on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and fleeing the scene of an accident.

Former junior-middleweight champion Charlo won his middleweight belt over Brandon Adams in 2019, defending the belt against Dennis Hogan, Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Juan Macias Montiel (on June 19, 2021) before sidelining himself for mental health reasons, admitting during his 2023 fight week that drugs and alcohol were part of the problem.

It’s unclear who Charlo will fight for now, but placing him on the card with Plant furthers their rivalry that peaked when Plant punched Charlo in the face during the July 2023 Terence Crawford-Errol Spence Jnr fight week in Las Vegas.

The super middleweight field will be busy in May, starting with Canelo Alvarez and William Scull squaring off for the undisputed championship May 3 in Saudi Arabia on a card that includes contender Jaime Munguia meeting Bruno Surace in a rematch of Surace’s December upset knockout victory.

Also, another recent Alvarez challenger, Edgar Berlanga, says he wants to fight Plant, Charlo or Munguia next following his March 15 knockout victory in Florida that ended his Matchroom contract.

“No, listen,” snapped Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna. “So, look. I didn’t want to interrupt you and be rude and stuff, but I’m cutting all that shit out.”

The New Jersey veteran fights Jermall Charlo in Las Vegas on May 31, in a co-feature to Caleb Plant facing Jose Armando Resendiz.

From the outside looking in, it appears Premier Boxing Champions want to get to the grudge match between Charlo and Plant following their unsanctioned clash in the bowels of the T-Mobile Arena in 2023. But LaManna has no intention of Plant-Charlo happening.

“We’re not talking about Plant versus Charlo,” he continued, to BS. “We’re not doing that. You know what I mean? We’re not going to do that because at the end of the day, Jermall has to fight me and Caleb Plant has to fight – what’s his name? Resendiz?

“So, you know, that’s what we fight the fights for. And the truth is, Resendiz has no shot to beat Caleb Plant. He cannot beat Caleb Plant. Okay? That’s a fact. Well, it’s not a fact, but that’s more than likely. Okay? I could beat Jermall Charlo. I could beat him, so we can upset that. There’s no point talking about it. Let the fights happen first, and then what happens, happens.”

The fights will take place at the Michelob Arena at Vegas’ Mandalay Bay, and Charlo has been on course to face the 39-5-1 (18 KOs) boxer from Millville for months.

“It’s something that we were planning for, but whatever was going on with him put me on ice for a while, but yeah, I mean, finally,” he said. “Everything’s finally a go. It was frustrating as hell but it is what it is. It’s boxing. It’s not going to be the last time. It wasn’t the first; it won’t be the last. I’m just glad it’s here, so whatever happened in the past, it is what it is. We got a fight, and now, it’s going to happen.”

The 33-year-old boxed as recently as March, when stopping the 11-6-1 Noe Alejandro Lopez in two rounds in Philadelphia.

Unbeaten in 33 contests, Charlo, who is 34 years old, is an entirely different proposition, but he’s been blighted by inactivity and has fought just once in four years. That means that LaManna feels it might actually be happening at the right time.

“He’s not the same, I don’t think,” said LaManna. “But there’s only one way to find out and that’s to fight. That’s to fight the fight. So timing is everything. I’m real; I’m a stickler for that. Timing’s everything inside and outside the ring.

“So, yeah, I got lucky. I’m the chosen one to get him on his comeback and I’m going to make sure I make that known. It was a bad idea.”

But LaManna also recognizes that Charlo’s lack of activity is a wildcard in that no one knows what Charlo will bring on May 31. And the Jersey fighter understands that could also be the case.

“Everybody speculates what’s going on,” he added. “Everybody speculates what he’s been doing, what he hasn’t been doing. I don’t think that’s fair. I just think people need to let the fight happen and let it play out.”

LaManna has revealed that he struggled through the pandemic, and there have been multiple times when he considered walking away from life as an active fighter. Now, however, his decision to come back and fight on has been validated, but he also believes that Charlo could be his steepest challenge yet.

“This is everything – it’s the biggest thing,” he said.

“It’s the biggest name [I’ve faced]. I got almost 50-something pro fights and this is the biggest name. Probably [bigger than] everybody combined, for real. Including guys like [Erislandy] Lara. So, yeah, this is what it's all about. This is boxing. I’m just really happy to be a part of it. Being a co-main on Amazon is crazy.”

Had LaManna kept walking, he would never have known what he would have missed. His door to another major fight would have closed and this headline opportunity would never have materialized. He had all but given up on something like this years ago.

“A million percent – I quit boxing a thousand times,” he said. “Years ago, many, many. times.

“Actually, I’m not even sure. What was it – 2017, maybe? I had went through a whole retirement phase. I was done boxing. I didn’t want to do it no more, because nothing was happening. The big fights weren’t happening. I never had got, like a big, major opportunity fighting on TV or something like that. Boxing, it’s really a love-hate sport. So, you know, you just gotta be a little sick to love it for real. But I’m just gonna be a testament of just the common shit; never stopping; never quitting; just believing in yourself; all that good shit. That’s what it’s about.”

LaManna was pleased he fought in March. He had been training, hoping the Charlo fight might come, but at least his camp was not wasted.

“Since the end of September, they had me on ice,” he explained. “We were supposed to fight in December. Then that whole card got canceled; pushed back to March.

“Then it was like five weeks before the fight in March, the day before they were getting ready to announce… And they called me and said, ‘You know, won’t be ready to fight because of whatever’. So it was just some crazy shit, man. Some crazy stuff. I’m just thankful that I was able to fight regardless. I don’t really like tune-ups, but it is what it is. I took care of what I had to take care of. It felt good, but I was kind of right back in the gym because I just felt something was going to happen.

“We were working on a whole other fight, not Jermall. And then Luis DeCubas called me and from that moment on I kind of heard a different voice; a different tone in his voice. And I kind of knew that, ‘Oh, this shit’s for real now’. And so my mind switched to that and it got done.”
Through it all, LaManna waited and dreamed. He hoped and prayed. And, finally, the call came, and LaManna believes it is his affable nature and lifelong bonds in the sport that finally earned him his reward.

“Boxing’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” he said. “In life, actually, for real, you gotta be with the right people and all that. I’m very fortunate. I’m very, very fortunate to not only be the fighter, but also on the business-side; the promoting-side. I have long, long, long friendships and relationships with people… the head guys at PBC; the head guys at Top Rank; the head guys who run Matchroom USA. Like, these guys are good colleagues and buddies…

“We all grew up together in a way. They’re all a little bit older than me, but relationships are everything and that’s what I think got it for me. In addition to my commitment, in addition to the hard work and sacrifice and all that good shit, that’s what got me this. I just gotta make the best of it.”

Canela avoided Benavidez @ 168 like plague. He did the same with GGG back then when he fought Khan and then waited that GGG to get a bit older to fight him. lol
