Re: Does Rob Smith need to resign from BBBC?

Think there should be limits put on the amount of time you can hold these positions ,, they always seem to turn to dictatorships
Seems a fair call. Chance of someone getting seriously injured/killed during an all womens card at the current time is too much of a risk to take. Imagine the optics on that and the impact it would have for the sport as a whole. Best to delay, take a breather and reconvene on the other side.handsofstone wrote: ↑09 Sep 2022, 17:25 Another reason why Robert Smith has to go, another clanger, cricket, rugby league, golf, horse racing etc all on this weekend but the BBBC panic and make the wrong decision yet again, a lot of people out of pocket because of their incompetence
What are you on about? now its gone from someone getting killed in the ring because the queen died. It was, is and will be a terrible decision by the board.veriton wrote: ↑10 Sep 2022, 00:29Seems a fair call. Yeh I'm not sure what veritons getting at here either, it's not as if its like COVID where the emergency services had bigger fish to fry, plus there's small hall shows which aren't all female which have lost money, Boxing probably suffers more than any other sport with a delay and the BBBC once again have got it massively wrongunknownman79 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2022, 02:37What are you on about? now its gone from someone getting killed in the ring because the queen died. We'll have to disagree then. No harm in a pause out of respect. I think having an all female show is an aggravating factor to take into consideration.handsofstone wrote: ↑10 Sep 2022, 02:59Yeh I'm not sure what veritons getting at here either, it's not as if its like COVID where the emergency services had bigger fish to fry, plus there's small hall shows which aren't all female which have lost money, Boxing probably suffers more than any other sport with a delay and the BBBC once again have got it massively wrongunknownman79 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2022, 02:37What are you on about? now its gone from someone getting killed in the ring because the queen died. Sorry mate, but I just can't see any logic at play here. There's clearly plenty of harm in a pause, whether to the boxers themselves or to those fans who'd booked hotels, travel etc. As for your stance on small hall shows, I'm no fan of some of the match-making but that's incredibly hard on the boxers themselves, not to mention those in the industry who graft hard behind the scenes to make them happen (and profit is rarely the primary motivation given the amount of effort and hassle involved versus the return).veriton wrote: ↑10 Sep 2022, 04:00We'll have to disagree then. And small hall vanity shows can certainly wait. Waiting for 40x36s isn't likely to cause much distress except for those directly profiting from this weird mutation of sport.
As for other sports taking place, none of them involve the delivery of violence as the prime intention. The Board have done the right thing. Time and a place, and all that.
I note you frame your argument for continuing entirely on the personal aspect of those directly involved, and I totally get that. I'd be angry if I was out of pocket and perhaps my view would be different if it was Fury v AJ this weekend.Deserter wrote: ↑10 Sep 2022, 04:53Sorry mate, but I just can't see any logic at play here. Finally, the idea that there's somehow a barometer of disrespect to a monarch who died peacefully at a grand old age based on the intention of violence is just surreal. Rugby match = OK but boxing match = wrong because of intended violence sounds far more like a medical argument than anything remotely relating to paying respects.
After all, who are we actually talking about disrespecting? Do we honestly believe any of her immediate family would feel she had been disrespected because a boxing card went ahead on the same day as many other sports? Given their priorities I'd be astonished if they even noticed, let alone were offended by it.
The reality is that no-one who really matters when it comes to showing respect would be offended, and by contrast, along with the football, it constitutes a missed opportunity for a crowd to pay their respects as part of the event. That would have been far more meaningful to her family.
I honestly can't believe you're talking about a decision like this in the context of 'strategic management of the sport'. I've already covered off the reality of public perception i.e. no-one is going to be protesting the decision to go ahead in any way that could be considered remotely disruptive to the future of the sport.veriton wrote: ↑10 Sep 2022, 06:11I note you frame your argument for continuing entirely on the personal aspect of those directly involved, and I totally get that. However, I'd say the Board also have to balance that with strategic management of the entire sport. Factors to consider are risk and public perception and I can understand why they've shut down.
Imagine Shields or Marshall stretchered from the ring when the nation is in mourning, followed by headlines and amplified focus the sport could do without.
Postponing to next month is a good decision in my opinion. It will be just another fight night and all that goes with it, just not at such a sensitive time.

TBF I do kinda get that argument, especially as it’s a wornen only bill.
I’ve heard the same from a couple of folk.Coco wrote: ↑11 Sep 2022, 12:28 To give another opinion, I always found Robert Smith to be a really good bloke.
I have dealt with him on a number of occasions, helping me get stuff sorted for medicals, he oversaw my hearing after I got disqualified once.
I always found him helpful, fair and a nice bloke.
I also saw him plenty of times at shows when I was fighting and as a spectator, he always came over for a chat and to ask me how I was doing.
He was a decent fighter too, he knows the game.
Yeah but it was also when he was Southern Area secretaryWee Tommy wrote: ↑11 Sep 2022, 13:03I’ve heard the same from a couple of folk.Coco wrote: ↑11 Sep 2022, 12:28 To give another opinion, I always found Robert Smith to be a really good bloke.

Was he head of the board at this time?
Maybe his biggest failing is being too nice to make the necessary changes, either way he's not up to the task, if he's any integrity he should step asideWee Tommy wrote: ↑11 Sep 2022, 13:03I’ve heard the same from a couple of folk.Coco wrote: ↑11 Sep 2022, 12:28 To give another opinion, I always found Robert Smith to be a really good bloke.

Personally I don’t like the guy. It’s been when I’ve been very critical of him that folk have spoken up for him.handsofstone wrote: ↑11 Sep 2022, 13:46Maybe his biggest failing is being too nice to make the necessary changes, either way he's not up to the task, if he's any integrity he should step asideWee Tommy wrote: ↑11 Sep 2022, 13:03I’ve heard the same from a couple of folk.Coco wrote: ↑11 Sep 2022, 12:28 To give another opinion, I always found Robert Smith to be a really good bloke.
